Pacific Salt saves my dog from being mauled to death...

I know of one family with a indoor pit bull right now that thinks it's cute and funny because the toddler bites her tail. The dog has taken this abuse so far. Even though the adults have been warned if the dog bites the child will be killed or maimed at best, It continues. Should they have any dog? Let alone one with a powerful bite?

Maybe a better question is, "Should they have a kid?"

wow, has this thread really taken on a different shape lol. oh well, thats what forums are i guess. places to come and express our views right?
But i have some questions of the above statements. pitbulls were bred to fight in pits? Im not soo sure of that. the term pitbull is a slang term, givin to BULL baiting dogs, AFTER they found out that they were pretty good fighters too. they were bullbaiters first, and pitfighters second. there were never INITIALLY bred to fight in pits. the nickname came about afterwards.
do they still have it in em? no. not nearly as much as they used to. after pitfighting was banned, they started to breed fighting back out of them. Sure, theres still some left around here, but not anywhere near what it was.

And about that kid biting the pitbulls tail? the reason pitbulls (staffordshire terriers) are soo good with kids, is because of their super high tolerance of pain. what would make a spaniel or other type of dog bite a kid quick, would be because of their low pain tolerance. they bite automatically in response.
And plus, the staffordshire terriers place 4th in the temperment tests in the whole country. 4th.. out of who knows HOW many other breeds. yes, theyre that stable and well behaved. Ive never seen or heard of a staffy biting a kid just because.

Pit bulls are VASTLY overrepresented in dog bite statistics - just look at the numbers published by the CDC or any other reputable public health organization. They are ALL dangerous dogs bred for aggression and fighting, and they should be bred out of existence.

As for their owners, the vast majority are themselves aggressive, anti-social scumbags.
"

Some of your statement is true, and not soo true. As far as pitbulls stats being overrepresented? Thats a true statement. The very biased media tends to focus on them, and not on any of the other dogs around. So of course the pitbulls going to get unfair press.
and yes, unfortunately, a lot of their owners are indeed not the top of society. I see it eeevvvveerrryy day. Most squared away, competant dog owners, dont own pitbulls.. but nonetheless, there are however, a lot of very famous people that own them, including president roosevelt.

But tell me what exactly is a "dangerous" dog... and why should they be bred out of existence? Just because a dog is stronger than another, it shouldnt be around anymore? so we should just be surrounded by little toe biters from now on? Thats just rediculous man. Thats an unfair, biased opinion. What about the REAL threat.... dangerous humans?? Cant we breed these guys out of existance? Go onto your local sexual offender registry, and see how many csc guys live in your immediate neighborhood. which should you be worried about now. A "strong" dog, or one of these weirdos... I tell ya what. The staffys in my girlfriends family, are the most loyal dogs ive ever seen in my life. they are joined at the hip to their owners, and are the most loveable dogs ive ever seen. such social butterflys they are. theyre a true joy to have around. they have tons of personality, and even know when youre down and out, and will come over and sit by you to comfort you too. Thats a dam good dog the way I see it. The really nice by-product of these dogs are, when somethings not right, theyre by your side in an instant, and i feel MUCH more safer with my two dogs than i would alone. Cuz i dont always have some form of protection on me 24-7. but my dogs are with me alot of the time. And I could pick any one of these dogs in the family, to walk one of the youngsters in the family down to the corner store for example, and not ever have one worry in my mind. do that with a little corgi, or a dumb dachsund or whatnot. Oh yea, and my house is a little safer too while were gone. Sure you can shoot em but, most house theives dont cary guns to shoot guard dogs. theyre opportunists. they pick the easy houses, break in, grab a fist full of jewelry and are gone that fast. dogs are a nice deterrent as well. But, a little poodle? no problem, id just punt that stupid dog across the kitchen and go right to the jewelry box :) Theres many good uses for a big dog.

But tell me what exactly is a "dangerous" dog... and why should they be bred out of existence?

A "dangerous dog" typically has black & tan coloration (like a dachsund!) or short hair combined with a huge head.

"Studies" have concluded that such dogs tend to make namby-pamby girlie-men soil their britches far more frequently than other breeds.

Said pansies also feel that semiautomatic rifles and handguns are FAR more dangerous if they are black in color . . . doubly so if a ventilated handguard is added!

Furthermore, we all know that a single-edged "clickity clackity knife" (balisong) is much more deadly than the average lockblade . . . and a single edged OTF might as well be a WMD!!!

Pansy-assed legislators want to "protect" us all from the spiders in their own heads.

Ming, been following this thread for a while now, it's too bad the other dog died, but you did the right thing in saving Puff

as far as the whole "fighting dog" thread-drift thingy goes, i'm of the belief that the biggest factor in a dog's personality is it's training

one of my college freinds had a *HUGE* Rottweiler, 170 pounds of pure *muscle*.....

Max (the dog) thought he was a *lap* dog, and was one of the freindliest dogs you'd ever meet, he was a real softie

one of my co-workers had a Siberian Husky, gorgeous dog, Spy (the dog) looked like a wolf (purebred Husky though), and she was a sweet dog as well, exceptionally smart too, on one of her many trips down to the Service department, i gave her a couple of doggie snacks (Liver Biscotti, or as we called it "Puppy-Crack" ;) ),she would always "Sing" (howl) for us when she wanted a treat, i gave her a couple pieces then hid the bag on the top shelf of the incoming repairs rack
the next day, Spy came down, walked past my co-workers, sat down in front of me, looked at me, then the spot on the rack where the Puppy Crack was hiding, back to me, to the rack, than sang!
she saw me hide the baggie just once, the previous day, yet she remembered exactly where i hid it, and asked me for more treats

on the other hand, another college freind had a toy poodle that was neurotic and skittish and would crap on the rug, whenever it got pissed off at us (the dog, not my freind), one time when i came to visit, the dog had been to the groomers for the classic poodle fur trim, my freind warned me not to laugh at the dog, as it was already neurotic, i couldn't help myself though, and sure enough, the dog glared at us, then grabbed the TV remote and hid it under a bed, all the time glaring at us

it's all in the way they're raised

Yep. The meanest dog i know, is like 75% beagle, and 25% staffy, and that dog is a straight up jerk. I mean, it wont want any attention, till its buddy jake wants some, THEN itll come over and knock jake out of the way, to come and see you. and no other dog can play with its toys either. if it does, it gets mad, and barks. if my dog dio comes too close to him, hell freak and try to tear my dogs head off, althewhile barking VERY viciously. i tell ya what, hes only about 50 lbs (about 30 of that is straight up fat in the ass) but id be kinda intimidated if he tried to attack me. lol. i know id win, and wouldnt back down, as i am very good on the ground (wrestling) and will get on all fours with any living thing around, but that dog is VERY VERY vicious, and i dont trust him as far as i can throw him. All the pitbulls around the house are very stable, relaxed dogs. I think a lot of people believe too much of what they hear and see on the tele myself.

To be honest, i was very single minded in my view of rots and the staffy type dogs, as i grew up in detroit. so i only seen the one side of it all. only thugs and losers in my neighborhood own these dogs. they use them for all the wrong reasons. so i grew up thinking that these dogs are just lazy, mean, vicious dogs, that have no genuine speed or agility whatsoever. (cuz at the time, my favourite dog was the german shepherd)

so after i met my current girlfriend, who had one, i was like "ohhh god. here we go, some trailer trash chick and a pitbull. great." After I met her, and her dog, I was like 'wow, this dog is smart as a whip!'. I was quite suprised to say the least. Fast as a lighting bolt, very agile, and extremely intelligent. even for a human lol. this dog speaks english men... he knows more words, than the people ive lived with in detroit for 32 years, and the local gas station attendant as well. im not shittin you. Its been MONTHS since hes played with 'the duckie' and just yesterday, i was like 'hey dio, wheres the ducky!" he went right to the hall closet, where i put it last. I didnt even know where it was last lol.

Trust me, a dog is a dog. its in their raising. Ever see that video on youtube, about the baby horse that was raised with dogs? it acts JUST like a dog. lol. tell me its not in its raising now. The dam horse thinks its a dog. a dogs just a dog. it could be a jack russel terrier or a border collie, and if you never train it, itll never be smart like the rest of em. i could raise a miniature pincer to be an attack dog, and itll be the most vicious dog youve ever seen.

I've encountered fighting Pits, have been bitten by a Rhodesian Ridgeback, and have scars from a 150#+ Rottweiler.

You wanna know what dog scared me the most?

L'il 35# Springer Spaniel . . . totally psychotic . . . mutt acted like it was on PCP!

"and a single edged OTF might as well be a WMD!!!"

lol.. that got me thinking... people do view that knife as a super horrible weapon ... I remember when I was a painter before the army. i used to carry a cheap nato military to open paint cans, and do all sorts of other utility crap with me on the jobsite, as a lot of time, i was using my other hand to hang off of something, or holding a brush, with no place to set it down on a ladder 40' in the air, so i needed to have a one handed knife with me.
That dam knife, as cheap as it was, helped me a ton of times. as a stabbing weapon, it was downright useless as you all know im sure. but boy does it garner some funny looks from people lol. they look at you as if youre lighting a fuse to a stick of dynamite. Yep, they mind as well be wmd's for sure.

but do pitbulls own every other dog on the planet? nope. theyre just good at what they do, and we like what they do so we use em. thats all. i still love little poodle/yorkshire terrier mixes as well. theyre such lovable dogs. lol. id have one of those as well if my house was bigger. i tell ya, they'd lend themselves to sleeping on the bed much better than my other dogs!

lol. dio tries to dry hump the covers by our feet when we crawl into bed and get under the covers. lol its hilarious.

This thread should be renamed to "Hijacked thread - Pit Bulls pwn every other dog on the planet".

Maybe someone could start a new thread named "Pit Bulls pwn every other dog on the planet" or something, but I personally do not think this thread was "hijacked". Ming65's ordeal and knife fight with the dogs was about talked out in the first couple or three pages, and this thread just naturally progressed into something different, but on a similar topic. Only difference, it seems to me, is that it turned into an arguement about dog breeds.

Noones arguing though. arguments carry negative connotations. this is just a discussion on peoples past or present dog experiences.

Tonight the Atlanta news reported that a pit bull killed a 2 year old girl. For those of you who say the breed is kind and just mis-understood - I call BS!

Quote whatever resources you may - we'll agree to disagree.

Yeah, right.

1) WAS it a pit bull, or is that just what the media called it?
2) How was it raised and did the owner behave responsibly or did he use it to intimidate?
3) What were the circumstances? Was the child left unattended with the dog?

4) Why is your conclusion that the BREED was at fault?

There is an ancient saying that one white crow proves that not all crows are black. We have reasonable testimony that many purebred pit bulls are reliable and tolerant family pets.

If other pit bulls, seemingly identical in ancestry, behave badly, why would this prove the whole breed is unreliable, rather than -- as we know -- many owners deliberately brutalize these dogs?

If there were no pit bulls, as before pit bulls became widely known, other breeds would be mistreated and demonized.

take the test. and be honest too. now, tell me, if you think that the newsperson that did the report, would have gotten the same results on the test.

like esav said. if it wasnt this breed, it would be somethin else. just like guns. if they got rid of all guns, they'd use bats. or knives or somethin.
everything these hoodlums touch, they turn to shit. they ruin everything, and its not fair. we cant let them ruin everything for us law abiding citizens. its bullshit. i personally know 9 pitbull owners that have no problems whatsoever with theirs. believe nothing of what you hear, and only half of what you see.

Close to where I live the only dog related deaths have been from a Great Dane, A Rottweiler and a St. Bernard. Any large capable dog can kill a human. It's best to never allow a child to be alone with such a dog. Kids have been known to do some stupid things to a pet and in some cases the animal snaps. By rights people should be screened and checked on to own any dog(or pet), not only to see if they are safe with it but care for the dog. That's not going to happen so we are going to see animal abuse along with few deaths every year. Just as some people leave a loaded handgun where a child can find it. We all don't do it but the ones that do certainly make all of us gun owners look bad.

Md. Infant Critical After Mauling by Family Dachshund

By Colleen Jenkins
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, December 17, 2002; Page B03

A 6-week-old St. Mary's County boy was in critical condition yesterday after being dragged from his playpen and mauled by the family's dachshund, police said.

The infant was sleeping in a downstairs bedroom Sunday morning when his mother, Andrea Meyers, heard cries coming from a baby monitor, according to a report from the criminal investigations unit of the Maryland State Police. When Meyers reached the bedroom, she found the dog attacking the boy, police said.

The dog had chewed a hole through the mesh of the playpen and pulled the baby from it, the report states, before biting his legs and feet. When police arrived at the St. Mary's City home, the baby was alert but had numerous lacerations on his lower body, a detective sergeant said.

Although state police identified the mother, Cpl. Roger Redmond refused to provide the name of the child because he was a juvenile. Redmond said police were continuing their investigation.

No one answered the telephone at the family home yesterday.

The child was flown to Children's Hospital in Washington, where he was reported in critical condition last evening, hospital spokeswoman Ashley Wolfington said.

Police said the incident was unlike any they could remember in St. Mary's County, particularly with such a diminutive dog. Dachshunds have short legs and long bodies. Even the biggest of the breed weigh only 16 to 32 pounds, according to the Dachshund Club of America.

They aren't typically aggressive, yet preparation is required to familiarize a dog with a new child, said Andra O'Connell, secretary of the New York-based club.

Otherwise, the animal -- which comes from a hunting breed -- feels like an overlooked older child, she said.

"The dachshund is so incredibly tuned to being a family dog," O'Connell said yesterday. "They are very loyal to their family and owners. They don't want to be left out, and for that reason, they will get upset. But attack, no. That's not normal."

St. Mary's County animal control officers removed the dog from the Meyers home after the attack.

Dog attacks can kill your child

Dog attacks and dog bites are amazingly common in America. According to this site, there are about 5 million dog bites per year. Over half of the people bitten by dogs are children.

Steps you can take
To protect your child against dog attacks, you should take the following steps:

You should NEVER leave an infant, toddler or child alone with the family dog or a friend's dog, even if the dog is "as gentle as a lamb" and "loves children". It does not matter if the dog is large or small. It does not matter what breed the dog is. Even if you are in the room, a baby or toddler should NEVER be left on the floor in the same room with any dog.

If you are playing or walking in an area with your child and a dog approaches, you should pick up your child and leave the area.

You should train your child to never walk up to and pat any dog on a leash, or any strange dog not on a leash. The child should always keep at a safe distance and ask the owner's permission before approaching any dog.
Un-neutered male dogs are the most agressive. If you have a dog and children, you should have the dog spayed or neutered.
If you have been around dogs all your life and if you love dogs, these measures sound extreme. They sound extreme only until you realize that there are 5 million dog bites in America every year, and more than half of them happen to children. The reason they happen to children is because children and dogs are about the same size (or the dog is larger). A dog can be intimidated by the physical size of an adult, but not by a child. The most common place for a dog to attack is the child's face. Dogs are animals, and even the best animals can act in unpredictable ways for unknown reasons.

A friend of mine was at home sitting on the couch. His daughter, a toddler, was on the floor watching TV in the same room. The family dog of 10 years ran over and bit the child on the face. The child was rushed to the emergency room and it stiches were required to repair the damage. There was no reason for the attack, and no provocation. Perhaps a sound on the TV set the dog off. Who knows? Then it happened again several months later, and they had the dog put down. This was a happy little lap dog that had never before shown signs of aggression. Dogs can be totally unpredictable.
