Pacific Salt saves my dog from being mauled to death...

Pit bulls where developed to pit fight, but they also where not developed to attack humans.

ummmm then why do they attack humans?

by your logic, the ones that ARE trained to pit fight ARE the ones that attack humans.........or is it the PETS that attack humans?

bkkd,
I have owned this breed for over 25 years, the sad fact is it is the "PETS" that are the one's that are doing the attacking and killing. If you look it is the "Family" pet that gets loose and ends up mauling or maiming something or someone. Human aggression was one of many things that would get an animal "Culled" by the Game dog owner. Pits today are the flavor of the month and anyone with one todays wants to breed them and cash in on their popularity. This is sadly, one breed that me be destroyed because of its own popularity.

bingo...........................we have a winner.

I've been lucky to have a family that encouraged me to do as I wanted instead of what others think a young girl should. I spend much of my spare time hiking in the woods with my dogs, Its very relaxing to me. So, this is a "blade forum" and not a dog forum I suppose This will be my last post in this thread.

Hi Jill, since you are taking some flack on this whole fighting dog topic... I'd like to see you start a thread on the sentences I quoted. I'd like to know what knives you bring into those woods, and what you do with them. Have a favorite chopper? a fave whittling knife? What is your EDC?

I will not comment on the whole dog fighting angle. Due to my profession, I have very strong and visceral feelings on this topic that are best left unsaid.

Let's see what a strong independent young lady like yourself thinks about all things knife.

I'd be the first one to say that most people have no business with a Pit Bull or any other large powerful dog, that they are not willing to devote a lot of time to learning about and caring for. Many of the things I posted said just that. Dogs where developed by man to do certain things. Its certainly not any breeds fault that they have been bred to fight or be protective. I merely posted facts about fighting dogs from sites where its legal to fight dogs. (Japan) My interest in dogs ability is purely that of learning. I have four dogs and only one is a pit bull. One is a yellow lab, a corgi and a small hound that was dropped. The pit bull was given to me and she gets along well with them. She's a sweet dog and plays with the others, never coming close to biting them. She is not allowed to roam about or even be alone with my other dogs with me gone. I realize what her genes are and don't take chances something could happen and her get in a fight and kill one of my other dogs. Even if she seems to love them. Yes some pets of a lot of different breeds are involved in killing a child or even an adult each year. There's a lot of total neglect and utter stupidity in all aspects of the human race. I know of one family with a indoor pit bull right now that thinks it's cute and funny because the toddler bites her tail. The dog has taken this abuse so far. Even though the adults have been warned if the dog bites the child will be killed or maimed at best, It continues. Should they have any dog? Let alone one with a powerful bite? I don't have all the answers to the way people treat animals. I do like to know about things and try to treat any pets with respect and kindness that I've gained by it. I'm certainly not guilty of fighting or abusing any animal just because I read about their history. I tend to try to learn as much as possible about anything I'm involved with.

I collect a lot of different brands and types of knives. Many I can't bring myself to do more than carry. I have Spyderco, Benchmade, Kershaw, Buck, A few CRKT, Cold Steel, Muela, Case, Hen&Rooster to name a few. I use mostly the same ones as I'd never cut nothing with my Kershaw Blue ti bump, or Spyderco Starmate, Full sized Persian, Tuff Ram Civilian or any of the other knives I own, just to collect. I don't have to have a vast array of knives to hack brush from the trails I hike on. A Buck 119 will do just fine. In fact I own two one to use the other to keep mint.(35 bucks at wal-mart why not) I like to carry almost all my knives, even if I'd never use them for anything other than something life threatening. (for a user folder I really like Spyderco's full sized Manix)

Jill,
It seems that you have done your home work on the Pit bull breed and know and respect the history behind them. Like you said these are not for everyone, be ever vigil because the last thing this breed needs is more bad press. Good luck with most faithfull companion you will ever have.

God Bless America

Pit bulls are VASTLY overrepresented in dog bite statistics - just look at the numbers published by the CDC or any other reputable public health organization. They are ALL dangerous dogs bred for aggression and fighting, and they should be bred out of existence.

As for their owners, the vast majority are themselves aggressive, anti-social scumbags.

I know I'm new to this forum but when I saw this thread I had to add my .02 cents. This thread is getting borderline retarded. Where I come from pit bulls have to be in muzzles at all times when outside. And if a pit bull attacks another dog or anything else for that matter (ie. a cat) the owner is going to jail. And frankly thats the way I think it should be. Pit bulls are the absolute worst choice of dog on the planet. Why? Because they are pit fighters, plain and simple. I'm not sure why anyone one would want this liability. I sure as heck dont. I also agree that most people that own pits are the scum of society. I'm the owner of 2 miniature Schnauzers and if some ignorant pitbull owner ever let his dog loose and attacked my dogs I can assure you that it would be the end of that dogs life and probably the owners too.
And I'm also pretty disgusted with all this talk glorifying pit fighting. Why would anyone want a dog to be apart of this. And Jill I mean cmon, guns? knives? tough dogs? maybe you should step out of the sticks and join the rest of us in the 21st century. Well thats the end of my rant.

P.S. I'm pretty sure Jill really has a penis................( sorry if I'm wrong Jill)

This is interesting. If someone is disgusted with the thread and the direction it's taken, why are you reading it and responding? I'll bet Ming65 never even dreamed this would become a very large thread. It's gone along just fine even though Jill's fought "like a pit bull" and, in these last two pages, seems to have won!

How can you be so sure about your last statement and what's the difference anyway? And if you're bold enough to be so sure, why follow it with an apology?

This thread's about dogs and knives. I kindly like it....and I learned a hell of alot about pit bulls while I was reading.

Jill I have one daughter. She's fixing to be 9 and she already knows how to start a fire with a knife and Doans mag/flint. She can cook eggs (in the shell) in that fire and she knows how deep to bury the potatos under the coals and how long to let them cook. She carries a Victorinox, SAK, a PSK with her everywhere, and she already knows how to use a signal mirror. She's pretty smart and if she turns out as well spoken and interested in learning as you, I'll continue to be a proud Dad.

This is an incredibly thoughtless statement, but at least it is succinct, which gives us some chance to respond pointedly.

First, the CDC is not necessarily such a reputable organization. Sticking to disease in itself, they are professional. As they branch out into deciding on health definitions of social questions like this, as they did with gun ownership, they are incompetent, contentious, agenda-driven, and unreliable.

Second, think about why "pit bulls" may be overrepresented in statistics like this. It could have to do with the tendency of reporting agencies to label any strong shorthaired dog they encounter a pit bull.

It could also have to do with the clear preference of owners who deliberately abuse their dogs to develop aggressive behavior to choose pit bulls and similar breeds, exactly because of the prejudice you express. This becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Third, they are certainly not ALL dangerous, as attested by the many pure-bred, well-raised dogs in this category that never harm anyone. Where do you find statistics on this? Nowhere. No one records how many dogs don't bite strangers ...

Fourth, to extrapolate from sloppy thinking about the dogs to anti-social remarks about owners you know nothing about is borderline trolling.

bSquirrel, we don't have a moderator on the Practical Tactical forum, and in any case, Bladeforums policy prefers not to lock threads simply for being ridiculous.

Once you know a thread is not to your liking, don't click on it. If you find a particular poster is clogging up the discussion, put them on Ignore, then their posts won't show up.

this is a blade forum. Not a dog forum. Everyone has had his 2 cents at least 50 times. Now let each man be happy with his dollar and let it go.

in a fight, Dog>people. people with weapons>dogs. Thats all we need to know.

Now for the really important question: given the impending zombie invasion, which knife will you choose?

answer that question there^

EDIT: I sincerely and wholeheartedly mean no-one any offense. I have only ever participated in one other forum in my life, so I am unfamiliar with the particulars of this forum's policies--particularly with respect to technical details. I only found this place through candlepowerforums, which in turn I only found because I feel that every man should carry at the very least one knife and one flashlight at all times. I also believe in being an educated consumer, so I prefer the objective opinions of an educated elite over the blatant lies of the manufacturer.

You can't be serious. "Her" best shot was a longwinded cut and paste job from a dogfighting website in Japan. I guess by that definition a filibuster is a win.

Being a proud pitbull owner, presa owner and staffy owner I am rather ashamed of her statements. She is part of the problem with pitbull owners who "stay true" to the breed.

As far as the rest of her hijack of the thread....:barf:

As to everything else I'll stay skeptical.

bSquirrel,
Sometimes threads take on a path quite different than they started out as....this one isn;t the first and won;t be the last. As Esav Benyamin said, if it is ridiculous to someone, the smartest thing to do is not to read and respond...in any way. Unless, of course, they change their mind and choose to join in.... We open a Forum and read the list of threads. The ones that appeal to us we open and read. If we want to respond, we do. If the thread no longer interests us, we close it and move on. Sometimes we don;t go back to that thread.

I liked this thread from the beginning and, even though it changed course a little, I still like it. I wouldn;t want anyone to "close it", "lock it", or otherwise mess it up because one (or three) members didn;t care for it. It sorta feels like it's almost over anyway. Let it fade away on its own.

Well maybe you're right The Chef, I just meant to say that she hung in there and tried to make her point against all odds. She didn't get so upset as to be nasty in the same way that some folks were a little nasty with her. I mean, she learned about those dogs and fought back.....maybe she didn't win, but she done good!

If I was even a little right, and she did "win", it was in this respect: I'm convinced now that, speaking about the entire breed, no dog breed anywhere in the world is more dangerously as tough a fighter as the pit bull. None. (Speaking of breeds now, not individual and relatively rare occurrances where pit bulls might lose a fight here or there)

In the end though, it's not about winners and losers in this thread. It turned into a lesson on pit bulls and I learned a little bit I didn;t know.

Dude, you'd be surprised the way threads turn in here...especially with dogs.

I just had my adoption from the pound thread get hijacked and turned into the same BS. Its always the same everywhere you talk about dogs...It starts out purpose driven and clear to tell a story or relay info on a breed. Then denegrates to "Pits suck" and "Pits are the best". I'll just stick to my guns and say treat them all good, they are here to be our friends and companions. I like dogs with big smiles, short coats and giants heads someone likes sheepdogs and yet another likes his little dachsunds. Its all good and like I said before thanks Ming for sharing your story.

I'm sure you don't see why I'd take an unwanted pit bull that would have probably been but to sleep otherwise. I'm also sure you'd see no need for me to learn all I can about the breed afterwards. My father has always collected firearms, knives and had hunting dogs. And yes we live in a out of the way place. No thank you as far as "stepping out". The only reason I posted facts on dogs that fight is because I find it so strange that as soon as "Pit Bulls" are brought up so many jump in with their breed that saved the day against "huge attacking pairs" of them. I don't care what you think about me or if you think a girl couldn't like the outdoors(yes I even hunt deer and gut my own) and handle and care for a dog others condemn based on the actions of a few morons, that own one without even knowing anything about the breed. To me that is "borderline retarded". p.s. I could also say that i'm pretty sure you don't have a penis if you are so bothered by firearms, knives and rough dogs, BUT I think thats rude and pointless.
