Paddling into 2013

Have not paddled with one of those, but I have coveted a Carbon bent shaft at "two bones" for a long time. I prefer moving water over flat so a straight shaft has always been my choice, and wood is so forgiving. I will one day add to my Quiver.

My quiver is pretty full at the moment, but I can always put a Mohawk or two in the shed.

Hi Mckrob .... my son ron may be a a friend to you ... BMLSS

Codger ... my sincere apology for the drift in my last post ... I did not understand that, without paid membership, I had any other way to respond to the information in an earlier post. I did receive a communication to my post via PM to which I will respond. Again ... so sorry for this interloping ... I research and learn as much as I can before pressing that button. This forum is such a wealth of information and of such generosity of spirit ... and of such spirited debate. I would never offend the convention.

Shewt! No apologies needed! I look on this as a conversation where people come and go from the room. And conversation drift is natural. Glad to have you participate.

Mewolf - Yes I did/do. I've been carving paddles for years. All those in the photo are flatwater paddles designed specifically for Omering (Classic Canadian Solo).

Mewolf - No, I don't "compete" as such. I used to teach clinics and perform choreographed routines in this style, and I did a bunch of guiding. My passion though, is wilderness travel. And I find this graceful style and its unique skill set to be a wonderful accompaniment to those of fast water running and big lake navigation.

We have a few canoes, but "my" boat is a 16' 10" cedar canvas custom built by Pat Smith of West Hollow Boat Works in Naples, New York. I re-canvassed it and put new thwarts and rails on it at his shop in 2002.

Here's a couple shots taken when I was young, fit, and handsome.:p

Today's Arkansas whitewater video, "Whitewater Rafting the Cossatot River in Arkansas" from this past weekend. A raft is not a very traditional vessel for this river, so these guys were trying something fairly new there.

Hey! Goodbye to the snow scoop, the ergo snow shovel, the light snow shovel ... and to the snow roof rake! Kiss the ice cleats goodbye!

It ... the Spring thing ... is upon us here in Muskoka.

The Black River is chuckling where it bubbles ... can unfettered freedom be far behind

Nice Boat! I've always loved old boats, but have never got my hands on one, maybe when I'm older and less handsome.:D

Enviable craft! Too enviable to mention, actually. Haha. What body of water may I ask? My husband is from Glace Bay and the area is dear to me.

Taldesta - Those are from Long Lake in the Shannon River Watershed near Kedji. Beautiful region and a great paddling lake.

A bit of paddling from across the pond - River Towy.

Hey, again Codger ... I have taken time (& travel to wifi) to catch a number of the 'Paddling ..' videos as I promised/threatened  and have enjoyed them in great detail. What an insight you are kind enough to provide on this forum. Thank you so much. Not something that I am capable of tackling ... but I sure can respect the skill and spirit and camaradarie. The team, the support, the commitment to others in what can become a life-threatening sport.

For me here, the paddling may be a piece off yet.

Just not successful in posting my video clips at this time ... but will try again. It is interesting to see the climate at work in all its vagaries.

Glad you were finally able to view them Susan! Yeah, I am a bit long in the tooth to be doing a lot of heavy whitewater myself. In fact, I had an incident weekend before last that has me considering quitting canoeing altogether. Caused by a personal health issue, not lack of knowledge, equipment or skill.

And yet at the same time, I continue to keep my eye open for a good deal on a used whitewater canoe, while keeping my two recreational canoes and plotting local river trips.

All of my stream fishing gear (rods, lures, stringers etc.) vanished over the winter, so I am replacing that kit a bit at a time before I go for a better floatation vest. Meanwhile I have passed on several canoe deals. The latest and most notable was a deal on five retired aluninum livery Grummans for $75 each.

And I have been closely monitoring river levels. My local favorite stream went to nearly 14' on the gage a week ago after an almost 4" rain and was dropping to near normal levels until last night's 2" of rain. Hopefully it will not rise so much that I can't get on the water this weekend. It is a bit of a bother that none of my local friends paddle and both of my adult children and all adult stepchildren have moved away so that I have only Jake as a paddling partner now. He is great company to share adventure with, but not so good at rescuing an old man.

Hi Codger ... thanks for your good nature!

I am experimenting here with the posting of a video clip. Photobucket has made some changes and I need to know how to adjust. Likely the format of my media. Will try to learn more ...

I was able to watch it though the sound volume knocked my socks off and scared the dog! I am mostly deaf and have amplified speakers for my computer. Most normal volume is too low for comfortable listening even with amplification. But Jake thought the waterfalls were here in the room with us! I love the sound of waterfalls.
