Pale Horse Fighter

I think Kyles work is so good that everyone is really critical because we want to make him the best. I see tons of knives that seem to have odd proportions. Kyle shows so much skill here at such a young age so maybe with all the criticism he will be made into an unstoppable master VERY soon. Because seriously, I think this knife is WAY nicer then most I see on a daily basis.

But yes, I understand that handle looks a little small. I bet it isn't. I think the blade is just big so it looks that way. I also recall comments on his handles looking a little long, so I really think that is a great improvement.

I don't want to make Kyle the best anything.

What I want is for Kyle to be able to take some seriously over-the-top talent and run with it....without expectations....for him to be able to listen to the voices in his head and make masterpieces as he will...

Which is not possible when everyone is telling you that you are the second coming of Bill Moran, Jerry Fisk, and Darryl Meier combined, with a pinch of Will Rogers mixed in for personality, and that your knives are flawless.

C'mon, Jon, what's it feel like to be the youngest knife collector with one of the finest eyes that I've seen in 20 years? Gimme some advice, tell me how I can do it too, and I need a computer fixed while you're at it.;)

STeven, I have the utmost respect for your point on this whole thing regarding criticism and I agree with you. I think constructive criticism is VERY important and that Kyle should keep improving and striving to be the best he can be. I am not the best at putting words to my thoughts (writing scares me to death). I don't really think that any maker can be the absolute best. Everyone has their own style which floats different folks boats. I guess I was sort of being a wise ass before.

I just really like this knife. I see alot of knives get tons of praise when I think they just don't look right. I think that this knife in particular has some great improvements that were worth pointing out (IMO a shorter handle is one of them). I also think it has alot of the qualities I would want in a knife I purchase.

I think that Kyle has set the bar very high and can never stop improving. Why not tell him that he makes a beautiful knife though. :) I would never say he is the next Moran. I have tremendous respect for Bill and his legacy, but his knives don't compliment my taste whatsoever. I think Kyles work is tasteful and with more and more knives he just might have a legacy of his own. I know that if I get criticized too much I get discouraged from working but I also know that Kyle has tough skin so I didn't mean to disagree with your post.

By the way I think you have a great eye as well. Most criticism you give just hits the spot and is dead on, so your comment means alot to me. Now YOU teach me how to wear cool hats with out looking like a jerk.

EDIT- Have you ever noticed that ugly knives don't get much feedback or criticism? I think that everyone is offering Kyle tons of advice because he really might just become one of the best and we can see it. We see skill and potential so we try to make sure his dream is followed through.

I just worry about outside influence on him. Wouldn't respond to any of this if there was not the overwhelming "you're the greatest"...just like most of us don't comment on ugly knives. Not a lot of variation in writing "damn, that knife is ugly".

Go to the City, Worth & Worth Hat Shop, 45 W 57th St, 10019....try on every hat that you think looks cool....ask the staff what they think, take a friend, ask him or her what they think....after you find one you like...wear it....OWN IT, and you will develop your own "hat style" without looking like a jerk.

I get you and its understandable. From now on..

"Thats a fine blade Kyle. But do better next time."

:)

Out of curiousity, is something different about this Ivory? The grain doesn't seem mammothy to me. It almost has a swirly irridescent horn look to it.

In the name of constructive criticism, I think that if the riccasso was shortened and the blade came closer to the guard it would make a world of difference. Nick wheeler/Jason Knight style.

I don't want to make Kyle the best anything.

Steven, whose making the claims above and telling Kyle he's the greatest?

I haven't seen it.
Every so often he posts a knife here and most like them. He seems to be an incredibility fast learner, makes very nice knives and the fact that he's so young excites people.

Thanks. I Garrsoned it. Another thing I noticed after doing that is that the ricasso even looks wider when its shorter.

Its a visual illusion maybe.

Your "Pale Horse Rider" is amazing, everything about it!

Wow!!! Incredible work! You know that we are going to have to ply you with booze and leave you in the dumpster behind the hotel at Blade on Thursday night. Otherwise, you are going to make the rest of us look bad at the JS judging:D

That's flat out gorgeous! The Damascus is incredible and the detail on the handle and guard is just perfect.

Ditto everything that has been said - exceptional work.
What do you think guys - could Kyle be our next "Peck" award recipient?
..... or should I say congratulations, on the "JS" stamp.
My personal favorite, talk about pressure!

Did I exaggerate in my statement above? Sure. Do you think any of the above was helpful, Kevin? Encouraging, sure, but look at the sum of the parts, not the individual pieces.

Like I said, I am done with this kind of thread about Kyle, I'll leave you to it.

STeven Garsson

Nice work. Beautiful damascus. Fantastic handle material. Nothing wrong with this knife. I like it.

How does the sheath look?

Kind regards,

Jos

I have to agree that looks better, though maybe somewhere in between would be even better. For me though, on a Bowie this big I like enough ricasso to choke up and wrap a finger around. Obviously, if it's just for show that doesn't matter.

Good point about wrapping the finger around.

That photo may really leave folks scratching their heads  in the future.

dammit, I can't help myself;
D guard! Takes care of the handle sizing concerns at least visually, and fits the intended use of the knife.
There, I said it. Just remember- I don't know anything:)

Jonathan it was a normal piece of brown bark ivory on the outside but on the inside there were these incredible burly colors on some of it.

Thanks for all the input everyone!

Here are pictures of the sheath I made for the knife. It has a Diamondback Rattlesnake skin inlay.

IMO it matches the knife very well. The workmanship is quality, but needs to catch up with your knife work...
