paper sharpening wheels are easy to use, even for beginners.

Late to the party here, but Richard J has given enough to the community here that he should be treated with respect. It is natural to have disagreement over technique among skilled people with passion, but there is a way to do it and a way not to do it...

thanks heiheit for removing your posts.. good man.

Why is it good that heiheit removed posts of his negative first experiences with paper wheels? I was interested to see his damaged knife, and I am sure others who are interested in using paper wheels would be as well.

There is nothing wrong with making mistakes, we all do it. Every sharpening system has a learning curve, so why would it be an issue for someone to show that they were still learning?

If you don't like the paper wheels you don't have to use them. If you don't like Richard for some reason, you don't have to read his posts.
A lot of us like what Richard has to say. If you don't, simply put him on your ignore list and move along.

I like your signature line

"Paper wheels just might be the answer to all of your troubles!" :) :)

Also agree 100% with your signature line.

Have used paper wheels for 20 years and am yet to find any faults with them.

This post could have sounded a little more intelligent if you had actually read my posts in this thread.

Gentlemen, I do not want to have to monitor this thread. But personal attacks are not appropriate in discussion forums. Address the topic, not each other.

protourist remembered that. The rest of you should, too.

you are so right rupert. i'm coming up on 20 years. its nice to be able to sharpen all your knives in minutes instead of hours :D

The only thing that bugs me about Richard and his paper wheels is this, someone posts a thread asking if he can sharpen his broadheads with the sharpmaker and he posts:
there is a bowhunting supply center in alaska that is selling paper wheels to its customers for sharpening broadheads. check out alaska bow hunting supply. they have a picture of a guy shaving his face with a 2 blade broadhead. the system is the same as what i use for my knives. i sharpen several friends broadheads on them every year.

Perhaps a little dogmatic, but maybe this guy did not know about the paper wheels, so Richard gave him an option to look at. It is more on topic than I usually am. :o

my side hurts from laughing too hard these past few days to rest :D i like your sig ine cj :D.

Just having fun Richard, because as Dudley Moore said many moons ago, "Isn't fun the best thing to have?"

I like using waterstones, diamond plates, and strops for sharpening, perhaps a little too much (yeah, 'perhaps' ), but the system richard_j is recommending is a better idea for most people. The wheels and grinder cost less than a tricked out Sharpmaker (that is Sharpmaker plus the ultra-fine hones and diamond hones plus aftermarket hones from somewhere like Congress Tools to cut faster than the diamond hones), an EdgePro Apex with all the goodies, a 1"x30" belt sander with array of grinding belts and leather finishing belt, and especially less than a full set of waterstones (especially if you want waterstones that don't suck with steels like S30V). The learning curve is generally quicker and the results are much quicker, too.

In richard_j's case, he's not getting a percentage of sales from the manufacturer or their distributors, but he's not only promoting these wheels, he's also giving free assistance with them, too. That is not spam. That's helping fellow knifeknuts keep more time in their day and more money in their knife fund.
