paper sharpening wheels - when your time is important to you

I must say I am impressed with the sharpening wheels. I have sharpened about a dozen knives today and wow! Not only are they as sharp as any knife I have ever sharpened they are fast. I have been sharpening knives as a part time job for a couple years now and you have just made my life a lot easier. Thanks Richard!

Richard, for a v-edge, would you bring a burr up on the grit-wheel or would you prefer to use the belt-sander?

for a v edge nothing is faster than the grit wheel. i use the belt sander when convexing a blade or edge

just a safety reminder guys. never go edge first into either wheel. this will result in the knife catching and being thrown back at you.

Just a note since Richard brought up safety. I never ever sharpen knives on a belt sander or paper wheels with a lanyard. If the lanyard ever got caught in the wheels or belt sander you could have a very dangerous situation. I never even bring a knife with a lanyard to my sharpening table where my belt sander and now wheels are located. Just some food for thought.

its funny that you brought that up and thats a good tip too. i sharpened 246 knives over memorial day weekend and a lot of them had lanyards. i had a really wide band that i put over the lanyard to keep it clear. i just forgot to post that in my safety thread but i figured most people would know to keep a lanyard out of the way before sharpening it.

I used my paper wheels for the first time tonight....I'm sold.
I was sharpening everything that wouldn't move...I even got a little more life from a Exacto-knife blade I was about to throw out.
I'm sure I have plenty practice to do, but I see great results already:thumbup:

Bought mine at Woodcraft, BTW.

Richard, I just wanted to let you know I just sold my first knife sharpened with the wheels and they were amazed with the sharpness, as was I. Thanks for the advice and help.

Glad you are enjoying those wheels! I now enjoy sharp knives instead of marking my calendar as to when I can put an edge on one in my collection of users. Excellent!:D

You done good Madman!
I looked around and Woodcraft has them locally for about $42....Grizz has them at $32 but by the time you pay for the freight........

These wheels make me look like I know what I'm doing!

Have sharpened a lot of knives since getting my wheels several months ago. Finally today I started charging for my service! Looking forward to seeing how this little sideline business grows. Everyone is amazed at how sharp their knives can become. Earlier this week a guy brought me two brand new kitchen knives still in the box. He had seen how sharp the wheels got them and just wasn't satisfied with new knives anymore!

Thanks to Richard for getting us all on the right track and keeping us safe!

I will chime in here too. I just got my wheels from Grizzly and I am very impressed. What used to take me a lot of time has been shortened to a minute or two with better results than I was getting before. I thought there would be a bit more of a learning curve, so I started on a pretty beat up folder and had it impressively sharp in no time. I am sure with some practice, I will get even better results. Thanks Richard for the info.

Richard,
How do you work the charities? I assume you set up your wheels at the event and sharpen knives for your going rate and donate the money to the charity. And in turn you probably get many new customers. I assume you would hand out business cards or flyers etc advertising your business. I am definitely interested in doing this but will be glad for any suggestions. Also any charities that you have found to be good ones to work with.
If you had rather call me, call me tomorrow morning. I'm off to bed!
Thanks

i like ones like a special wish or the shriners. the lions club is another one you might check with. if there is a volunteer fire department or emergency squad in your area check with them. call your local newspaper or tv station and see if they know any charities.

I hope you have insuance Richard!! The knife I sold with an edge put on with the paper wheels already bit its new owner. He was looking at the knife and dropped it. As it past by his leg it put a nice clean cut on his leg. Needless to say he was impressed with the sharpness.:D:cool: It wasn't a bad cut so everyone is OK.
