paper sharpening wheels - when your time is important to you

i sharpened a straight razor for a friend that was in bad shape. he uses it to shave his face when he feels brave enough to try every now and then. some of the knives i make are sharp enough to shave your face with.

After talking with Richard I agree that the laser pointer is probably not a good idea due to safety concerns. Safety first!

How easy is it to mess up a blade edge using a paper sharpening wheel?

Using the grit wheel, it would be quite easy, assuming you had no clue as to what you were doing.
If you are interested in the wheels, I suggest that you PM Richard, or Email him so as to get an idea of what you are getting into.
Once you practice a bit, they are remarkably easy to use.

I had Richard sharpen a knife that I made that was returned to me for a resharpen. And the owner said that when he went to gut a deer that it was so sharp that he was just trying to cut through the skin and cut into the gut and made one heck of a miss. All I can say, is that he said he wanted it as sharp as I could get it, maybe Richard got it to sharp for that guy.

i once had a guy ask me if "i can not get a knife so sharp" (after a blade touched my finger and cut me) i asked him why would i not want to get a knife as sharp as possible. he didnt say anything after that. i was talking to a friend the other day and after sharpening his knives for years he is still scared to use one i sharpened.

Ok when I try to muscle something I end up screwing things up. How dou you guys get the plastic bushing out from the wheel? I am thinking cutting it in half and kind of peeling it out.

My 8 inch slow speed grinder (1725 rpm) and stand showed up Friday. The 10 inch wheels will be here tomorrow. Picked up a flexible lamp to help me see the burr today. Tuesday night the fun begins.

Thanks Richard for all the tips and sharing your technique.

The burr is almost easier to feel rather than see. My 43 yr. old eyes rely on the edge of my finger nail to feel the burr. I do not know if my eyes could detect it even in good light. Most of my slipjoints with various metal hardnesses will have a burr in just a couple of passes. It is remarkably fast. Make sure you figure what angle you want to use. I noticed if I wanted a "thin" profile, it took maybe 3 to 4 passes rather than 1 to 2. Have fun, start with a not so valuable knife, and you cannot go wrong. Say goodbye to all the hair on your arm if you test it that way!

A burr in a few passes is pretty exciting to me. My 39 year old eyes are still pretty good, thought I would give the light a try. I have a few cheaper knives to practice on. Really does not look that hard to master. If my learning curve is slow I will go pick up a hack saw blade to practice with. Thanks for the input.

You can use one of the magnifying visors while you sharpen to give you a sharper view of what is going on if you need.

I use a jewelers loupe to check out my edges after working them to be sure that I am consistent over the whole edge.

Good lighting can not be replaced at any time while working on the wheels.

I am a believer!!! I just sharpened two blades up and hey are scary sharp. Thanks Richard.

Recieved the wheels today. Took about 10 minutes to figure it out. (I think maybe a week or so to master.) First knife was an old Gerber Gator that was pretty trashed. Anyway, after I got that blade to shave and was more comfortable, grabbed a few more knives and PRESTO all the hair on my arms disappeared. Well I am going to throw on some shorts so I can test more knives. The wheels work.

My uncle has a set and I tried a couple of knifes on them.I can get them utility sharp but haven't yet been able to get one razor sharp. They shave but not a hair popping shave.gonna need more practice.
