paper sharpening wheels - when your time is important to you

Paper wheel Mafia? What paper wheel Mafia? What's up with all this mafia talk? Mafia this, mafia that...its all in your head, son.

:D

Mafia? There's no such thing, we're just businessmen.

There should be a new thread or something with the information in this one condensed. I mean, not to be critical or anything, but I wanted to read up a little about paper wheels, and found myself clicking on page after page in order to gleam some information out of richard's posts as people asked questions.

I think there's a need for some organization here. Maybe someone could make a new thread with a basic run down of paper wheel information as far as what type of equipment to get, where to get them, and the basic techniques of their use, caveats, etc all in the first post and then let the rest be this basic question and answer format.

Maybe a paper wheel wiki?

I agree....why not under Manufacturer?? For all the crusading that's done for the wheels here, seems like the maker of them would benefit from paying for it's own sub-forum.

For all the anti-wheel crusading that's done around here, you'd think there's an anti-wheel mafia. :D

That would be up to the manufacturer to have his own forum here wouldn't it? He probably would benefit but he might not have any interest in which case there would be no forum. I think it would be a great idea for the manufacturer to have a presence here.

In a lengthy phone conversation with Mike Smith(he's a chatty fellow), he told me he doesn't spend much time online. But Richard J could always moderate the forum. :D

If you do an advanced search of this thread and filter by Richard's screen name, you will get a list of all and only his posts.

Or, even easier, if you go to the main "Maintanence..." forum page where this thread is listed, you can click the blue number in the "replies" column. That will list all those who have posted in the thread. Find Richards name (it will be at the top) and click the blue number next to his name ("posts"). That will also list all his posts in the thread.

I'm just a happy user of the wheels. Nobody asked me, is compensating me in any way, or instructed me to talk about the wheels. Some folks seem a little touchy about them and that's their problem.

Blue Sky, thanks for the above info. I didn't know that could be done.

Ditto;)

I be strictly amateur.

The first rule of the Paper Wheel Ma... (oh crap).

In case anyone is wondering just how sharp your knife can get on paper wheels:

This is my Spyderco Salt-1 with H-1 steel. Not a steel known for attaining extreme sharpness. If H-1 can do this, so can any other steel. (Correction, H-1 does take a good edge. Doesn't have great retention.)

I'm using a bench grinder to rebevel my knives. I don't have the paper wheels (yet? dunno if I'll get them); I'm just using the 60-grit grinding wheel. I can rebevel a knife in a matter of seconds rather than 8-32 hours.

I think this is going to save my eyes lol

And you're right; it isn't too hard to get used to. In my case, though, I'm not holding the knife flat and grinding on the 1 o'clock position. I'm working at the top of the wheel and holding the angle myself. This works better for me, personally.

nice job dan. and you didnt have to go through a bunch of grits to accomplish that edge.
i had a chance to check out an h-1 a few weeks ago. it will be interesting to find out how well the edge holds up.
thg, you should get a set of paper wheels instead of using the grinding wheel. that is a good way to ruin a knife real quick.

I'm still using the white compound that came with the wheels. I don't know what the grit is but I was thinking about switching to the green compound. That's probably finer, right?

The edge won't last as well as some others. I've read that it's similar to Aus-8 and I agree with that assessment. Certainly not bad, but no big deal. :D Again, better life through power tools (paper wheels).

If you're getting the results you want then that's great. Personally, I wouldn't subject any of my knives to a grinding wheel. If you're enjoying the edges you're getting now I think you'll particularly pleased with paper wheels. Good luck either way.
