paper sharpening wheels - when your time is important to you

Here is a serrated blade that Richard sharpened for me. I wish I would have had a before picture, this blade wouldn't cut anything but now it will cut anything you throw at it. Cuts with ease! He sharpened this blade with a slotted wheel ONLY!!

Thanx Rich ;-)

I was going to actually remove the serrations because they were so bad but he brought it back to life. So Ill get some more use from this blade now.

Great thread. I've been looking into getting these same sharpening wheels and now I think my decision has been made. =)

I have mine up and running... Still learning some knives take me a litte longer to get a good edge on. I have made some hair whittling sharp. :D WHich is good enough for me LOL... I notice the softer poorer quality steel is harder to get the burr off of.

THe wife is thrilled the kitchen knives are sharper than they ever were.

glad you are having good luck. just practice on getting an even edge and burr worked up.

as for the burr on softer steels, i have noticed the same on both hard and soft steels. when buffing a blade, you can use more pressure on the slotted wheel than the grit wheel.

what part of ontario are you from?

its easy to resharpen a serrated blade just using the slotted wheel if the serrations are not in bad shape without the need to grind on the backside of the blade.

a few spots might not be quite as pointy and i could have recut them but there was no need.

that camera takes good pictures. it looks like some skin or something on the one tooth in the bottom picture :D

Paper wheels are a lot of fun once you get the hang of em!

Convexed zdp endura polished on the slotted wheel:

Full serrated endura, just a quick swipe on the flat blackside of the serrations keeps her cutting nicely (the cento 4 gets paper wheel spa treatment as well!):

Spydie Bill Moran FB, crazy sharp as it's been thinned and convexed then polished on the slotted wheel:

on the endura, when you say "a quick swipe on the flat blackside" you do mean with the slotted wheel and not the grit wheel correct.

send me an email with your number and i'll give you a call. i have free long distance to canada. rje196021@gmail.com

Yes sir, I don't want to ruin the stock edge geometry of the serrations by grinding them down on the grit wheel, I only tune them up with the slotted wheel and it seems to work well so far...

Richard knows what he is doing for sure. I'm new on here and heard really good reviews on him.. He sharpened two of my GEC knives which everyone who knows gec doesn't have a good edge. So he put a wicked edge on the two which was needed. I give him 10 out of 10. He is a very personal person who like getting to know the people he works for which to me reminds me of how everyone who has a business should be. Will be my main guy to use until I learn how to do it right myself which will take a while ;)

over the 21 years i have sharpened with the paper wheels, i have seen a lot of odd looking knives-blades, some with special purposes but i have never seen a "proprietary blade" for a special purpose until now. i even had to sign an non disclosure agreement in order to even see a picture of the blade.

i was contacted by a company in northwestern new jersey about doing some sharpening for them but it had a catch. i had to come to new jersey in order to do the work.

since i'm not able to travel i told them how to sharpen and maintain the blade wth the paper wheels. i also suggested they get a guy with arms like popeye and some kevlar gloves :D.

Richard, I was given a set of paper wheels by someone who used them a few times and hated them. Unfortunately he lost the "wax" for the grit wheel. What should I get as a replacement?

you can use candle wax in a pinch but i would get some from woodcraft or order some from mike at razorsharp.

NOOOOO!!!!

Today I was sharpening a few chisels for my dad, All of a sudden one of the chisels snapped out of my hands on to the floor. I quickly turned off my grinder and picked the tool up. Upon further inspection I found this...

Im soooo pissed about this I cant even begin to describe it. I just sent an email to razor sharp and hopefully they'll cover it under warranty if not ill just have to order a new set of wheels. This sucks big time for me. Did this happen to anybody else or am I just the stupid one?

Looks like you were buffering blade leading, which is a major NO NO. You can buy just the slotted wheel, instead of a whole new pair. Glad no one was injured.

I know, I'v sharpened hundreds of knives on the wheels. I guess i just wasnt paying attention to what I was doing.

It happens. I was buffering a pair of scissors once and I turned them the wrong way. They dug into the wheel just enough to kick back in my hands, but I managed to hold on to them. No damage to me or the wheel, but it got my attention! I was by myself so I wasn't distracted by outside sources, just by my own carelessness. I always double check now, especially if I am working on something other than a knife.
