paper sharpening wheels - when your time is important to you

I just got a set of wheels because of this thread that Richard J started. I have 2 bench grinders set up. A Delta variable speed for the grit wheel and an old Bronco fixed speed grinder that I "borrowed" from my father. My prayers go out to Richard J. Get well.

Richard,

Sorry that your not feeling well. Hope you recover soon. My prayers are with you.

Take care,

Rob

Hope you have a speedy recovery Richard!

Just wanted to share a mishap with the other paper wheel converts here.

I started using the wheel with them turning towards me after talking to Richard. Immediately made it easier for me to sharpen, and they stay sharp a lot longer. More than a month now vs week or two before.

Anyway, regarding the safety aspect of having the wheel turn towards you. I didn't think it was possible, but my mind started wandering while sharpening the 8" chef knife today. Well, wouldn't you know it, the knife slipped out of my hands, hit the wheel and flew into my stomach! Luckily it hit me on the flat and no injury, but my wheel has a huge gouge in in it.

I won't go back to the other way, but will make sure I heed Richards warning to pay attention and not be distracted while doing this.

That is why I have my wheels set up in the basement away from all "OUTSIDE" distractions. I do have my wheels turning away from me to take away any internal (me, or my mind wandering) distractions. The direction the wheels turn does not help or hinder how long they stay sharp. It is all in how well you do the job properly the first time.

Not to take away your success after reversing the direction, but it had more to do with an improved technique than the direction. Congrats on your success, and glad to hear your little accident went un-scathed. These wheels amaze me every time I use mine, which is almost daily.

Blessings,

Omar

Richard, glad you are unscathed.
Ditto Omar's comments.
I dropped a knife today. And let it fall. I'm learning!

Get well soon Richard.

i just came home today. i want to thank everyone for all of their wellwishes. i hope to be back in shape in a week or 2. :D

Great news Richard! You will be back in no time. Just don't rush it, we don't want any re-lapses. We will continue to pray for a speedy recovery.

Blessings,

Omar

Glad to have you home Richard. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery.
Take care and don't rush it.

just curious how exactly can you tell that a burr has formed?

is it something you can see on the blade edge ? if so, what exactly are you looking for?

or is it something you can only feel?

Although, I can get the knives fairly sharp, it seem to be a little bit trial and error.

also, can somebody post a close up picture of their wheels? just want to compare what mine looks like right now. not sure if I'm putting on enough was, or putting on too much.

It's more something that you're going to feel. However, once you develop an eye for it and know what you're looking for you can see it. Well, you're not really looking at the burr itself exactly, but more the light reflecting off it (hard to describe what you're looking for).

i feel for a burr by using the underside of my fingers. i work up such a fine burr sometimes its hard to feel and some days i'm not even able to feel one even though its there. you can take a needle and thread, hold the thread just a short ways from the eye and let the needle slide down to the top edge which is the side a burr will form on. if there is a burr, the needle will hit it.

if you send me your number i'll be glad to give you a call.

I just ordered the Porter Cable model from Lowes. It has variable speed from 2000 - 3400 RPM. I hope that the 2000 is ok? Ordering the razor sharp edge wheels now! Very excited to try it this weekend!!
