paper sharpening wheels - when your time is important to you

Man ....I love these wheels since I've gotten the hang of using them!
Faster than anything I've used to get a burr, and finish polish up sharp.

Most edges just need "touched-up" on the slotted wheel.
Since starting out with these wheels,...out of 175 knives, I've only used the grit wheel on 16, and re-convexed 19 on my belt grinder.

Sharpened up a bunch of doughnut shop knives over the weekend, and traded sharpening for 80lbs. fresh meat at a butcher shop monday.

I love the look on faces when I give someone a "scary sharp" knife to compare with the one they are using right then.
I usually leave with a satchel full of knives to "touch-up" for them.

Thanks to RichardJ for steering me in the right direction!
(Wonder why this thread isn't a STICKY with this many pages, and GREAT information?)

Keep on wheel'n!

What's the best way to get in touch with richard j? Got at least one knife that I'd like to send him to have sharpened and I've heard nothing but good things about his work.

Send him a pm from here. He will probably get right back to you.

i wonder why myself. with 180.803 views and 1242 posts it has no doubt been read by a lot of people. i have talked a lot of lurkers into joining or buying a membership. they tell me the info in my thread is well worth buying a membership.

I ordered a set of these from Harbor freight - supposedly from the US manufacturer.
I've been having a very hard time getting these wheels true. I'm using a new Porter-Cabe variable speed 6" setup, and the hard wheels spun true.
I think I'm almost there - but it seems like I've taken about a quarter of an inch off to get there - both the grit and slotted wheels.
Anyone else have these problems?

when you dress a wheel to true it up, you have to have a strip of board with coarse grit paper attached that you can have the end on the table and lightly feed into the wheel until the wheel is true. if you try and true a wheel by directly holding a sanding block against the wheel it will never get true. it must be supported on the table so you can feed it in a little at a time until you get the wheel true.

Well..."Sticky" or not!....after 9 YEARS this lurker bought a subscription... because of all the information, and support of RichardJ's wheel sharpening thread!

Now instead of taking all day to sharpen what I need to,...I'm done in a few HOURS!

Thanks for all the help Richard!

I have read and re-read Richard's posts on sharpening. I had a couple of questions and Richard was good enough to call me and give me answers to my questions. Thank you Richard.

I agree this thread should be a sticky!

This Spydie TUFF came to me sharpened on a WEPS system, all it needed was a quick blast on the slotted paper wheel to make it really pop!

I love the paper wheels as I continue to find unique tasks (like random knife/tool modifications) for them in addition to sharpening. Well worth the $60.00 I paid.:thumbup:

Thanks for calling the other night. (This is patrick from Vancouver). I took your advice and turned the grinder around so it was spinning towards me. The difference is like night and day. This thread is probably too long, and when I first read it, somehow I got the impression that is should be spinning away from me. Anyway, it is so much easier to sharpen when you can see the edge of the knife. I was immediately able to sharpen a paring knife that I was having problems with. Now I need to find a used variable speed bench grinder.

The only dumb thing I did was I forgot that when I turned the grinder around, the grinding wheel was now on the right, and the slotted wheel on the left. DUHHHH!!! Took me a while to figure out why I was having a hard time.

Thanks again for the conversation. I'll have more questions for you soon!

Hi, I was wondering which system is better in quality wise. The "Razor Sharp System" or the "Grizzly brand Razor Sharp system" or the "Slicing Edge Sharpening System "
thank you.

The Razor Sharp System is the same as the one from Grizzly. They are an authorized dealer for the Razor Sharp System. The Slicing Edge Sharpening system is a different set of wheels, and since I have no experience with them, I won't comment on their merit. Their company site does have some good video's about using the wheels, and how to re-grit the wheels. I think Richard J. may have some experience with them.
You can't go wrong ordering from Grizzly by the way.

Omar

Speeder...
I use an old 1/2 hp. drill press motor .....I found the slower the rpms, the more control I have.
RichardJ turned me on to using the wheels toward me and I love it!

Just be sure to lift the tip off the wheel and DONT drag it all the way accross, or it grabs at the edge, and tries to pull the blade out of your hand!

"Menards" has a variable speed bench grinder that if you unscrew the base from the motor, you can turn it around so the switch is in the front.

Hope this helps!

Hey, it's a sticky now! Anyway used my wheels to sharpen a few exacto blades last night.

Also a helpful tip: Domt take the wheels off your grinder. It took me forever to true them again.

i had a set of off brand wheels and wore them out. the razor sharp system is made from the best material out there. i have the first set i ever bought which was in 91.

It's good to see this thread made a sticky. Now I don't need to search as much when I need info.
