It's fake. The box is fake. The white line should not be visible under the gold spyder. Blade markings are all wrong too.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience, I know how off-putting it can be.
But I wouldn't want to see you miss out on what I know from personal experience are among the best production EDC folder available, just because of an unidentified problem, or cause thereof.

I have 15 Spyderco folders, 5 of which are S30V including a Para2. I have never had edge problems like you describe here and show in your pics.
Occasionally a new factory S30v edge may get tiny chips in it seemingly easily with initial use because of the way they are sharpened. I had that happen on my Manix XL when new, though nowhere near as bad as your pics show. After re-profiling and sharpening it, that has never happened again, and that Manix XL has been used a lot in the last few years.
Spydercos S30V blades, in my experience, hold there edge well in all sorts of cutting use. So what you have described here is raising an alarm to me.

The G10 on my Spydies is very durable, it will not wear away at the edges without the use of an abrasive or many many many many hours of handling. That yours has, based on what you've said, sounds another alarm to me.

I have had stiff opening on a couple of new Spydercos, never gritty, just stiff. Sometimes use will break it in, sometimes a very tiny adjustment of the pivot screw is needed.

I have heard of people buying a genuine knife, putting a fake in the box and returning it to the seller, who can then unwittingly sell it on. Not saying this happened to you, but it's not impossible.

Better pics of the thumb ramp jimping, lock area and close ups of the G10 would help us see if it's a fake or not, though some fakes are getting to be to damn good and hard to spot, at least to my amateur eye.

Here's a few pics for you to compare. Note the backwards angle of the thumb ramp jimping.

May I make a suggestion? Go to the trouble of mailing it to Spyderco, with a letter outlining your issues. They will positively identify if it is genuine or not for you. If it is a fake, you'll know what the problem is.
If it is genuine, they may well fix your problem for you.

The list of BF recommended dealers is where you should shop for knives.

The problem with mailing it to spyderco is if it is fake (looks like it to me) you will not get it back. They may compensate you in some way but do not count on it.

Pictures like the ones above would help a lot! In one photo of yours (the OP) the jimping looks little angled, but the others it doesn't. Take your photos straight on.

Sorry, bit slow to post. Nah, the jimping just doesn't look right to me. And that edge is shite.
Sorry friend, I don't think it's a real Spyderco.

is that sprint run markings on a regular run s30v knife?

Was the ebayer an authorized spyderco dealer? Many fakes are sold by people that don't even know there selling fakes.

Mike

I've got five spyderco boxes in front of me. Not one of them has the stripe showing up through the spyder.

O. Umm my mistake.
Wrong info->Check out the letter and the end it reads "Thanx". Spyderco doesn't have spelling errors in the letters to the customer.

Wow I wonder how many people with no forum to consult have been turned off to spyderco forever do to a Chinese knock off.

i got mine from bladehq, i just checked the box and at an angle like the op's picture you can see the stripe beneath the spider.

This is a perfect example of misinformation, however well-placed the intentions of the poster may be. I just looked at the very same letter that came with my recently acquired MT-21 that I got directly from Spyderco. It says "Thanx", not "Thanks".

IMHO, while there are no doubt many who can tell most, if not all, fakes, I frankly have to rely on the factory to do that should I ever have a question. If they say something is real (or fake) and someone else with bonafides says otherwise, who are you going to believe? There is only one right answer here. :) Cough up the $6 and get Spyderco to resolve the issue once and for all, even if it means your knife is taken out of circulation because it is a fake.

Just checked a bunch of my boxes (yes, I keep them :)), some you can't see the line at all under the bug, some you can, some you can but only at an angle. All of my Spydies came mostly from the Shoppe where I usually buy Cutlery or from BF supported dealers. None are fakes.
As an example, the Sage 4 box I can clearly see the line under the bug. My Sage 4 is an immaculate example of Taichung quality, besides, I've never seen or heard of a fake Sage 4.

i have held my same PM2 to compare to your pic's and would give it a F for fake.along with all that has been mentioned hear already about fakes!you got bit,and i'm sorry it happened to you,i would file a case with e-bay at once, and i don't think they will give you any problems,as it would be a bit of a gamble with spyderco.

So what was the purpose of starting a thread here when the only way to bypass the BS and really get results was to send it to Spyderco immediately?

Ebay. What a huge surprise. Sigh...when will people learn.

Good luck with the situation OP. As others have suggested, I would send the knife to Spyderco for verification.
