Paramilitary refinement - need input

Hi everyone.

I'm trying to contact Crayola. This is the last thread/forum he posted in.

Anyone have a good email address for him? The one in his profile kicks back.

Thanks,

Judy

4 position clip
License the Axis Lock
ZDP-189 Option
Soften ALL handle corners

That's all I would worry about Sal.

BTW...Keep up the fantastic work Sal. Your responsiveness and consideration for your customers is the best there is. You are a tribute to our country.

srsly, Spyderco's superior (and more varied) knife designs and handle grip designs with the Axis lock would be amazing. =)

I like the extra handle length on the mil/para-mil. folks with larger hands can maintain a better grip on the knife.

IMO the Paramilitary would benefit from a number of changes.

First off, the finger choil design found on the Calypso Jr., Natives and Byrd Cara Cara is IMO the most appealing feature Spyderco has ever come up with. These knives don't have the exposed sharp corner at the back of the spine when closed, either, so I assume this would address that issue too.

As explored in some recent threads here, wire clips are well-liked by many and for obvious reasons. Spyderco should at least offer a wire clip option.

Lastly, and many will probably disagree, I simply don't buy S30V production knives anymore due to edge stability and chipping problems discussed at length on BFC. And I wish there were more tactical folders available with tool steel blades, so how about A1 at 61-62HRC, just to name one possibility? Now then you'd have something really special and worth getting excited about! If it has to stainless, however, Spyderco does a nice job with VG-10 .... in fact I'd rather have 8Cr13MoV done the way it is in the Byrd line, or 12C27M, instead of S30V.

About the only thing I'd say is a "must keep" with the Para is the flat ground leaf-shaped blade.

Thanx Much. I really appreciate all of the informed input. The Para is an early '07 project and "real world" opinions are best.

Hardheart. I'd love to analyze that blade. We've not had a chipping problem. Generally it means the edge is too hard. Be happy to trade it out for you?

cant wait to see how it looks Sal
early 07 is not that far away must not have had a ton to change (fine by me) refinement is a good thing

I just got one (NIB condition) from a fellow forumite, and I think it's PERFECT!!!!! I'd been carrying my Military for quite some time, but it's a little large for some settings. The Para is my ideal solution.
I can't think of anything I'd change. The compression lock works great, there is zero blade play (I'm picky; I'd notice), and the "sharp corner" isn't sharp at all.
Well done, Sal!

I appreciate the offer, Sal. But I just got in some extra abrasive and went ahead and played with the Para some more. I polished up the relief bevel (was at a 400 grit finish) and stropped the edge with 2.5 micron silicon carbide before going to the 0.5 micron chromium oxide, and I was able to make 150 cuts in cardboard with only 2 minor chips visible under magnification. I was able to make passes on the sharpmaker med/fine rod corners without chipping. The steel also doesn't seem to burr as readily as it did before. I think maybe the edge just overheated a bit on a buffer or something. I could still send it in if you like, but it seems to be improving as I sharpen it more. I guess I just had to do it about a half dozen times to get past the fatigued metal.

I like the design... I see some things I would like to tweak but these are only based on my personal usage patterns. Here goes... (FYI I can ramble so feel free to move on to the next post...)

- Blade
Slightly thicker tip, I would sacrifice some cutting performance for that. I end up using my Remote Release II for a lot of jobs simply b/c I think the point is stronger. This is probably mostly me and the tip could handle this perfectly but this perception has caused me more than once to change to another blade. (At least it is another Spyderco! :D BTW am I the only person who would love to see the Remote Release II blade in a standard handle w/o the clip? The blade design is simply incredible on that knife. I would carry it more but the clip makes it a tad large for normal carry.) Sorry, back to the Para... I think a slightly shorter blade would be welcome. Could the grind of the existing blade be "swept" up a tad more? This would both slightly shorten the knife while thickening the tip. Itsa two-fer!

- Compression lock
I like it. It has come a longer way. I have a Vesuvius (ATS-34) with a compression lock that I have carried twice... blade simply falls out of the handle... next to no retention. Cut myself within an hour of purchase. It's since been sitting in perpetual Timeout in the drawer. Latest compression locks are so much better. One change I would make is thickening the lock "tab". Just a tad... maybe it is just be my usage and grip(I am a lefty) but I often find myself gripping the knife and finding the first joint of my thumb resting right on top of the lock. The "tab" is rather thin, same thickness as the liner, and digs into my thumb. (Possibly more noticable as one scale is recessed here.) I find myself unconciously moving my thumb to the right side of the lock, partially resting in the recess. This is bad as I now could accidently unlock the knife if the knife got torqued somehow while cutting or with gloves on. The left side of my thumb is now directly against the lock. Sorry for the bad explanation....should have taken a picture! Anyway, when I epoxied a small piece of metal to the tab...approx thickening the lock to twice that of the original, the problem went away. Felt like I had more purchase, or comfort, when gripping the knife. Thumb stayed directly on top of the knife where God and Sal intended. Not sure if this is practical for a production change given the lock is part of the liner etc.

-Finger Choil
Love'em. Perhaps lengthening the front of the choil a bit for a bit more of a finger guard or jimping the choil... either way would make a slightly more secure grip.

-Hooded
Perhaps drilled and tapped for the end-user to install a "hood" a la my TiSalsa, ATR, etc. Might just be me but I love those hoods.

Clip style, tip up, tip down, handle scales, etc. No real preference. Is there a big enough market to offer these as options installed by users? Kind of a do-it-yourself custom shop. Of course the knife would need to be setup, drilled out, etc., to support this. This could be as extensive (blade styles, steels, etc. to scales, clips, etc.) or as limited (clips styles, colors,) as desired. Then again do you want the users to be monkeying around with the knife like that. Seems like many, at least on these forums, already are disassembling their knives for cleaning etc.

Just my 2 cents...

Remote Release II - The blade design is simply incredible on that knife.

I Agree! I own two Spydercos. A Para and a Remote Release II. I use the RRII all the time. I'm surprised it isn't more popular.

The only thing keeping me from wanting the Paramilitary is tip-down carry. On my little Cricket I find it acceptable, but I can't get used to it on a larger folder. Also, the tip looks like it might be easily breakable, but that might just be appearances. Everything else about it seems perfect.

I have been EDC a paramilitary black PE for a few months now. It gets the most pocket of all my knives.

The lock has become one of my favorites. The steel is great and the feel, well it feel really good.

The more I use my para the smoother the action gets.

The only thing I would change it make it a 4 way clip. I have gotten used to the tip down carry, but I still like tip up.
