Paul / CPE at Forged in Fire on May 4th

Thank you guys it was a lot of fun. Kind of crazy I lost on weight as I am obsessed about that on my knives but it was a lot of fun and maybe I will have a rematch someday.
You came across really well on the show and really dominated the first two rounds. A shame about your Damascus. I thought the weight issue was funny too since you are known for light knives.
Congrats!

Thank you I appreciate it. I learned a lot doing it. Like making a 10" damascus knife is so different from a 28" damascus sword. I didn't manage the stress in my billet properly. Squeezing it from one end instead of uniformly the stress built up amd blew the back end apart. With the smaller 12 ton I have I thought I would work from one end to the other and what I should have done was small bites end to end until it was reduced.

Great show, Paul, and congrats on your 2nd place ! Your sword seamed a little larger than your competitors, no surprise it was heavier ....

Congrats for an excellent performance! The winner and you both did great work. :)

I was pretty sure that the other guy was going to "win" as soon as it was mentioned that your sword was heavier and more difficult to control, assuming that both swords "performed" equally well, as they did.

Did you have the same feeling while the "testing" was going on or while the judges were deliberating?

You certainly made a couple of great looking knives right off the bat. Like mentioned too bad about your Damascus and the weight issue. The sword you made really looked solid and nice and your edge held up great as well after beating on that metal and all. You're still a winner in my book and will be watching your work from now on. Thanks for the awesome work and show Paul.

CPE_Knives CPE_Knives you made a great showing start to finish. This was possibly the best episode I’ve seen. You definitely stood out in the first two rounds but as sgt1372 said as soon as I heard them mention your final weapon was heavy, I slumped back a little bit and thought we’ll that about does it. Still and I can’t say it enough you had a great showing.

Can you comment on how many days it is from the time you are told of the final “home forge” challenge until you actually begin work and filming?
Do you have time to order materials if you don’t have something appropriate?
Are you offered any build material? Seems often times smiths return with a weapon made from the same material.

Thank you. Yeah it was quite a bit larger. When I looked the sword up historically it was as wide as the knifemakers hand at the base so I did that. It made it about 3/4 of an inch wider and added a lot of weight probably not a great idea in hind sight.

Thank you. For sure I knew during the test. Once you hear the heavy comment thats about it on every episode. I learned a bunch though and I think I could get 3/4 of a pound out of that sword if I did it again. First time making something like that.
