Also the first knife I ever bought as a specific camping blade was an opinel put out by coughlan's. I had this blade for 15 years now and I am always impressed with how well is does whatever I tell it to, especially compared to the other knives ive had that cost 5 times as much or more. Its light, relatively solid and just works.... I hope I still have it when I send my son on his first camp without his old man.

I would LOVE to get the Rat 1 if it is still available.

Did you just offer up a para 2? If no one snagged it I will and in turn offer up the Rat 1 you ordered for me. I'm also giving the strop Remy was giving me to totaldbag

I have never even held an opinel. I mean they look nice, like sort of a big-ish traditional, but i am totally uninitiated. Would someone explain the appeal? They are really good working knives, correct? Yes, i can look this up myself but more fun to ask here.

Excellent slicer, takes a nice edge...the stainless one even keeps it for a while. The handle is round, which can be odd in pocket, but they make amazing knives. They typically need to be sharpened when they arrive, but they're like $17 and the handles are wood. Locking ring takes a while to get used to. I have my No. 8 in rotation, but I'm honestly not liking it or my carbon No. 7. They may both find their way to this thread....

Everyone raves and raves about Opinels. I handled an Opinel once...seemed like a decent knife, but for some reason I just couldn't warm up to it. I guess I'm a superficial guy who likes G10 and fancy steels

That used to be me until I got an Opinel in a trade. I lived with it, ate with it, and carried it. It takes a while to appreciate how well it slices, how light it is, and how little fear it instills in non-knife-folk.

I carry an Opinel to work simply because, out of all the knives I own, it is the least likely to get me fired on the basis of weapon possession.

And no, the para wasn't offered, just a mis-communication. I am saving that for someone who does something exemplary, or for my one year BF anniversary, as stated in the post. I get it, everyone wants one , they are hard to find, yeah yeah yeah, carry on :)

1. The handle fits perfectly in to your hand

2. The blade is carbon steel and the grind make it THE best slicer I own

3. as previously mentioned, the carbon steel blade can be resharpened to hair-popping sharp in a minute or two

4. The collar lock makes it so that you can lock it firmly in place so when you use it, it won't come back and slice a finger or two, and it can also keep it locked close so it won't come open accidentally (never had it happen but if you mod it so that you can flip it open, it makes it a necessity.

5. Relatively inexpensive compared to other knives in the market

6. Very sturdy

7. The fact that it's made up of 5 parts makes it easy to take apart and mod and the wooden handle can be sanded down/engraved/restained with ease adding a personal touch to the knife

I am offering to order someone a brand spanking new opinel no 8, would you like to be the one to stamp that ticket :D?

Spyderco Paramilitary 2, I've seen lots of people swear to it as the best knife in it's price category, never touched a spyderco or any modern folder in my life so I wouldn't know ;)

If for some reason he passes I would love a #8. I have never owned an opinel but they are well liked around here.
