Paypal friends and family and does paypal cover knives if lost or scammed

Has anyone here in the history of BladeForums been scammed by someone after paying g&s? I’m genuinely curious if this has happened to
anyone.

The threshold in MA has been $600 since 2017...got blindsided by a 1099K and had to file Schedule C. Did so again for 2020, and will again for 2021. Ever since I have been keeping records on what I buy and sell, shipping costs, PP fees, etc, so I can accurately account for my expenses and only pay tax on any profit, rather than the whole 1099 amount.
I think 20k is the general guideline; maybe that’s federal. States can set their own limit.

If people would use the search function they'd see a SEA of threads of scams from friends and family payments here on bladeforums and would rethink doing business with someone who asks for it.

My wife was, BUT pp covered her so that doesn’t go against PP.

Buyer bought a $300 shirt. Tracking showed delivered. Over 2 months later
Buyer filed a charge back saying they never got the item. CC company instantly took money back from PP so they took from us. Investigation was completed, buyer somehow won (even after swearing to us she never filed a charge back). Luckily
PP did back us up.

Problem is, if PayPal won’t cover knives,
Or certain knives, or whatever the CS rep feels at the time, there’s no guarantee you’ll end up as lucky.

The new threshold for 2022 is $600. cumulative. They will be sending you a 1099(something think K ) form at the end of the year. If they don't have it already you will need to give PP your social security #. If you do not they will withhold 24% of the money and send it to the IRS.
Unfortunately we have been sucked into this. The law is intended to divulge those with online stores, get their wages paid, or rent and get paid through PP

First, I am not aware of anyone (here or elsewhere) that has had PP refuse to pay a valid claim when a knife was involved.

Second, I think the whole uptick in FF payment requests recently is being driven by the proposed new IRS rules that the lets go brandon folks want to impose on everyone. If they pass the $600 rule then that could effect mostly everyone here. I personally find that whole proposal insane and including the proposed IRS digging into everyone's bank account yet another serious concern. Not to be political, but politics is a driving factor in this. No sane person wants to get stuck paying taxes on something they already paid taxes on prior because they sold a few knives here (at probably less than what they paid) because most people don't keep receipts and records for such stuff.
I have always used GS when I sell, and still intend to, but who knows - if all of this nonsense comes to pass I may have to re-evaluate myself.

Ya, I heard 600 but I thought there was enough backlash for them to up that amount. It is still 20k as of today!

I believe it's been done (or tried) before and IIRC, the situations more or less mirrored the gentleman's story above.

Also, most of the buyers in the PM2Phanatic threads paid G&S.

Admittedly I've been out of the loop on all this stuff related to PayPal and taxes. Jeesh this sounds like a nightmare.

The $600 threshold was in 2 different cases.
1 was the PP type transactions, which is still on as far as I know-and I just checked
2 was for all bank account transactions, and I believe that is tabled

I wonder… is there a professional escrow or intermediary freight forwarder that might provide service for a small fee? Some third party business that would hold the money and review the product before forwarding product and releasing funds? Someone more “hands on” than these banks with their rules. Some knives are $500-$2000+. That would certainly be a big hit to take.

Glad you're caught up
I still don't agree with gifting people I don't know hundreds of dollars and relying on hope they send me the item. I'll either buy from guys I've seen for a long time on here or figure out another method. I might quit using PayPal all together depending on how this shakes out.

I think people put a lot of trust in members here due to the strong reputation of most members here. That’s a mistake. Treat every transaction with the due diligence you would a stranger. I don’t f&f people with a 250 positive feedback the same way I wouldn’t with someone with zero feedback. Matter of principles.

I'm assuming all those who are unwilling to pay F&F are also unwilling to do trades? With any transaction, there is always some risk and some basis in trust. Feedback is one mechanism to mitigate risk. People just need to do what they're comfortable with. Even if you pay G&S, you could possibly just get a dildo in a box too.
