PayPal's fee is 2.9% + $.30

I use to charge for Paypal fees ($2.9% + $0.30) until I saw another forum post new rules about how it's a "seller's fee" and not a buyer's fee. To this day, I made sure the payment is always received as goods so the buyer does not lose buyer's protection. I sometimes ask the buyer to split the fees with me but emphasize they are not obligated to do so. This also protects you from getting in trouble with Paypal for bypassing their gift feature. I have refunded a few gifted payments only to have the buyer resend it as goods. I'm paying the extra fees to receive this convenient payment. I hope everyone will do this as well. As for the ridiculous Paypal % that I've been seeing lately, I made it a game with my friend to see what the highest % we can find. We don't complain to the buyer either if we're interested in the item. We just simply skip the sale.

^^^^ yup this.

You are unfortunately correct Randy.

I just wonder why the Forum doesn't make it a condition of sales that everybody must use the goods option, no % additions, no ambiguity.

Regards, Will

Why should the owners of this site enforce the rules of PayPal?

As to banning F&F to "protect buyers" that smacks of the "nanny-state" protecting people who should protect themselves. Every day people buy knives w/o pictures, with poor pictures, and many times with written descriptions that do not even match the picture. Should there be rules for all of these situations?

If one does not know you can get ripped off with friends and family, maybe you should not be playing online with PayPal. If you do know the rules and risks and get scammed...who cares, you went in "eyes wide open."

There is one main BF rule, satisfaction for buyer and seller or it gets worked out GB&U. The worst that happens is you are banned. No need to micromanage.

I have had sales where PP charged 3.1% and some where PP charged 4%. So safe to say asking 3.5-4% is best to make sure the seller gets the actual amount.

I am older than most and we used to do sales with USPS Money orders only. With Money orderr you receive what the asking price is.

What were the dollar amounts and were you selling out of country during these situations?

If your PayPal confirmed address is located in the the U.S. and the sender of PP funds is also confirmed with an address is in the U.S. the current fees are 2.9% + 0.30 per transaction fee. If the fund sender has an international address registered with PP irrespective of where in the U.S. you may be shipping to (such is the case with many Canadian buyers), the current PP fee structure is 3.9% + 0.30 per transaction fee. There was a time in the past when having gained an eBay Top Seller status with very good standing order with PayPal would have discounted PP fees to 2.2% + 0.30, but that privilege was discontinued when PP split from eBay and became a separate entity.

Also, thank you for this thread. I'm a relative new comer to BFs and have used the Forum to sell a few knives which were no longer needed or were surplus to my current collection and/or use. I "learned" the F&F or add 4% if using G&S basically by emulating so many other Terms & Conditions. Wasn't aware that was a turn off to most members on here. This has been a revelation.

It's got nothing to do with 'nanny state' or micro-managing or any of those other cliches. It's got to do with common decency. Yes the Forum strongly advises buyers from using the Family option as it offers no protection. It also violates Paypal's terms so it should not be offered. The decency factor is what Randy alluded to, it's dishonest to seek deals as Family & Friends when you are not.

All a legit seller has to do is to state their full price including delivery. Not some sordid, Net, plus this or that % extra. Work out your price, courtesy.

^ Here is a link to a GBU "sticky" thread, that may be insightful to how a majority of the BF member's feel on this very contentious subject:
