i r spoke english wrong? thats unpossible!

Helmets are a good thing. When I used to ride motorcycles I had the unfortunate event of riding down the highway and getting hit with some debris falling off a construction vehicle. Nothing screams "Thank god I was wearing a helmet" 'more then getting smoked in the face with a foot long piece of 4x4 (or could of been 6x6 I didn't get to stop to see it) while traveling at speeds of about 70-80mph. I was wearing an Arai RX-7 racing helmet rated for high impacts, it definitely saved my life that day. It almost split the helmet in half and shattered my visor. had my guardian angle riding with me that day.

I wish my Father-in-Law thought like that my daughters worship him and he rides a Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 classic
No helmet and sandals,. Acordding to him only wimps wear headgear.
If I ever get my endorsement it will be jeans , boots , best helmet I can find and possible a leather jacket at the least Long sleave shirt. He says I'm a chicken I say better live chicken the dead duck.

I'm not going to lie, when I used to go to bikeweek events I never used to wear one. I used to trailer down with friends to South Carolina and Florida. The last trip I went on of that nature was in 2008. Zipping around town in traffic I never felt the need for one, but my perspective all changed after my little incident (2009). You'll never again find me without the minimum of leather boots / gloves, heavy jeans, riding jacket (leather for cold, ballistic nylon for hot), and a helmet.

Me and a new friend from my last trip to Myrtle Beach (before I was married)

The last time I was on a bike last summer. A friend of mine was nice enough to let me borrow his ZX-14. I was decked out in my track leathers :)

Sometimes even a helmet won't save you....a friend of my sister's (airplane pilot) was killed by a collision with a wild turkey while riding (helmeted).

Don't take this the wrong way, but anybody who has experience riding knows that it's not if you go down, it's when. Most guys who race them or have had race training won't ride them on the street anymore - it's that dangerous. Last guy I met who'd been racing (and teaching racing) for a decade says he hadn't ridden one on the street for almost as long as he's been racing. It's absolute hubris to think that you won't make any mistakes, or be able to avoid other's lapses of attention. As well as motorcycles, I've ridden tens of thousands of miles on road bicycles, and even though I've hit the pavement a couple of times, never landed on my head. I still put my helmet on every time I throw a leg over. If nothing else, it's a reminder to do my best to make it home safe.

Damn,

death by Turkey. What a way to go.

I prefer it the other way around, me shooting wild turkeys.

Damn, hit and miss. I can get certain sites, but my main site, here, I can't get most times.

rkmoore: you asked in the last snark what the handle was made of. It is from Axis deer antler. I do stain them to give them a unique color.
Glad you like it and it looks great next to you knife with the TH scales!

Thanks for getting back to me on that. I hate it when I have new gear that I love but can't answer basic questions about. I'll be showing this one off soon and I'm sure my brothers will have a few questions.

must be a very good friend. There are only 3 dudes allowed to throw a leg over my 14. And +100 for wearing the gear, I have not been riding lately because south florida summer weather sucks big time, lots of rain, hi temps and humidity make for miserable rides.

Dubz, BFC has been bad for me too. I posted that stove thread up on ESEE and BCUSA lickety split, but it took fifteen minutes to get it to post here.

Man did I ever land a hell of a deal, so you guys know I've been piddling with minibikes with my boy. Well, I was drinking a couple of beers and showing the chopper frame to my neighbor who ironically is the local police chief. :D he says that the one his kids have they dont ride anymore and he'd sell it to me if I was interested. "Of coarse says I". Well long story short, he just put a brand new 212cc engine on it last year. This thing hauls ass. I rode it around the block and it pulls my 240 lbs. around at about 30 to 35 mph. On top of that, he gave me the perfectly running stock 97cc engine and a perfectly working full-size refrigerator . Always need more beer storage in the garage. Grand total. $250. bucks. Hell yeah!

T.M.Hunt = WINNING!!!

It's my internet thought Guyon. I guess there's a slice in the fiber optics cable they've been working on. I can get on BCUSA lickety split, but here, and the ESEE forum is a no go. Working fine now, but I don't know for how long.

Father in law gave me an ancient white gas lantern. It's an old one mantle jobbie he got years ago at "Sears Roebuck". Anywhos, I just took it apart to give it a much needed cleaning. Rust by the bucket full is falling out of the inside. Is there anything I can dump in there, like vinegar, and let it sit overnight to get it out?

Yup. I rode a little Suzuki 185cc enduro in college, and it was a ton of fun. I always wore a helmet though, and thankfully never had an serious accidents. I did have the rear slip out from under me in a turn that I discovered had loose gravel on the asphalt about half way through the turn. Got a good road rash through my jeans, but otherwise not harmed. Also had to ride into the ditch once when an old lady in a light-colored 4-door sedan (a theme I've noticed...) pulled out in front of me. It was either plow into her rear bumper or into the ditch. Fortunately I didn't spill, and pulled back on the road without stopping.

So.....helmets are good! I didn't need the helmet in either of these incidents, but you don't get to control what others do, so best be prepared. I thought about getting another bike now that I'm settled down (retired from the Army, but still working), but quickly realized I didn't want to press my luck. Besides, you can buy a lot of knives (and guns) with the money that a decent motorcycle would cost.

In other news, I posted some info on my morning chores here:

TBL - You're right. Helmets save lives. Your's is just one story. For every BS story by a rider that says it's more dangerous to ride with a helmet, there are literally 100s to the contrary. Your 4x4 is a little more extreme, but as an EMT for 24 years, I have responded to a LOT of "motorcycle rider VS other stuff on the road" calls. I've seen several rocks to the head/helmet, car parts, pieces of blown tires, other road trash. Head trauma is the number 1 killer of riders (from my experience).

T-S, Like you said, better to be a live chicken than a dead duck. Maybe the next time he lays that BS line on you, respond with what I've told a lot of riders::

"Yep, and the meek shall inherit the earth. Make sure your will is up to date.".

Yep, I really AM the north end of a southbound mule - I have said that to idiots who don't wear a helmet, including relatives. Although to relatives I'm usually a lot more blunt and not so polite.

Darndest thing. When I first got my Hornet I put a good edge on it and for the life of me I can't get the thing to take another. I would think with the small flat edge it would be easy to lay it on a stone and find the angle and sharpen it right up but no matter how much I run it over the stone it doesn't make any difference. Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

My Yuma is the same way, I can't get a really good edge on it for the life of me! I've tried everything. Donno...

With my necker the problem I was having was that I wasn't hitting a consistent angle. So I had about 3-5 bevels in the edge.
