Perfect Survival Gun

Since you're talking guns in this thread, would anyone recommend a .22 as a survival gun? Why or why not? What is the reputation of .22?

yes. we've already (well me esp :>) have multiple times recommended .22LR (and .22WMR). it has served the world well for a VERY long time.

"they" say that more animals have been taken with 22 than with any other caliber, worldwide... all kinds of animals. even larger ones. however, for most people small game is the way to go, esp with survival, but you take what you can get reliably, right? :>

ammo is cheap, plentiful, SMALL, easy to carry, and effective enough. guns are readily available from small/light to larger and very accurate.

it's hard to go wrong with it for survival.

22LR is a great survival cartridge.
IMO most survival is going to be small game.
It would not be my first choice to use to defend myself, but I feel sorry for my attacker.
For $300 you can buy a Ruger 10-22, 2 25 round mags, and 1500 rounds.
To many people overlook this cartridge with the opinion that its only a 22.
Everything Bladite said.

I stick with the idea that "better an inferior tool in expert hands" if push comes to shove more is better than less. My *0.02. City or country and accurate 0.22 with 3,000 rnds would get my vote over a .45 anything and 400 rounds.

'around 1000 rounds fits in a solid uncrushable 1 liter nalgene bottle" Bladit.

Special forces carry them, Masad carries them, killed everything on the planet - almost- quiet.
Sure why not.

10/22 for survival? Yes please, lightweight with a folding stock can strap to your pack no problem, silly accurate. You can haul alot of ammo around, Couple baby bottle nipples for being quiet. Can't say I would be happy to run across a grizzly with only a 22 but other than that no problem.

12ga Mossberg 500
Ruger MKII 5" bull barrel
Ruger 10/22 Hogue stock

Anyone of those would do just fine. I really, really like the O/U combo guns, the perfect one would be 22WMR/20ga. Perfection. Sheer perfection.

Ya'll better start throwing some BKT knives in here or I'm gonna move this out, to guns and gear.

Did I hear somebody say slingbow....I'm in.

That's all you had to say :D Dave Canterbury did a review of one couple years ago.. key rings are easy to use, what do you have there.. or perhaps I'll go watch the vid you posted :)

I'm 100% all in with the .22.. now of course we're talking survival so that wouldn't be chilling at the range :D were talking lite, take it hiking, end up needing it type deal, were not talking survival against a bear mauling you .. .22 all day long.............

eta: oops sorry moose...

survive with that :)

30 rounds, .22 WMR/Magnum, weighs about 18 ounces with full magazine. toss some 50 grain hollowpoints in there, and you have about the same energy as a .38 special (or so i read). poor man's FN 5.7. good times. likely good to 100 yds, certainly to 50 yds. the gun is probably more accurate than you are. virtually no recoil. downside: LOUD. VERY. upside: very light. toss in BOB and forget it's there.

oh, the knife is a hoot too. in a survival bush situation, it will probably do everything you need doing, at least twice, before it needs a touch up :> from zombie skull crushing, piercing, slashing, cutting, and so forth, bob's your dead zombie uncle.

i didn't see anything pertinent?

'''The new Circuit Judge takes the most overwhelmingly successful revolver in recent history and has extended its range for incredible hunting and shooting. Now you can fire .410 GA. 3-inch Magnum shotshells, .410 GA. 2.5-inch shotshells and .45 Colt ammunition. In any order you please, without switching barrels. The Circuit Judge delivers amazing versatility, accuracy and simplicity. It includes the latest in modern features like a red fiber optic front sight, yoke detent, transfer bar and the Taurus Security System®.'''

was trying to figure out how .22 or .22WMR can go through a .410 barrel well?

The rifle pictured in the link is a circuit judge chambered in .22/.22 mag. it has 2 different cylinders (LR or mag) that can be swapped out. The bore is a .22cal. not .45/410

Survival eh? I'll take this one. Rugged and reliable, accurate and versatile. Yep, I'm going this route...

Thank you kindly. The gun belongs to the boss. I had to put it back real quick.
Haha, I remember the photo of the boss shooting it. Good to see you got it back in time. You must have, you can still type :D...BTW, I'll have a package inbound to you and the missus within the next few weeks.

I have only one gun, and it's a Marlin .22 MAG. Today I just went and picked up some HP-V rounds for it. I can't wait to see what those things do. I'm gonna get with a buddy of mine that's more into guns than knives, and see if he can learn me a thing or two about it. I'm also wanting to take off the scope and put the hard sights back on. I like the hard sights better.

I'm bringin' sexy back!!

MOSIN NAGANT!!

Jk, I'm sure a 10/22 would be great, don't have one yet. YET. The gun you have with you is pretty handy though, gotta say.

I understand you are kidding, but you aren't that too far off. They do make .32 cal chamber inserts (re-moveable) that will turn a Mosin into a single shot .32 ACP, or .32 Long or Short.

Not perfect but a reasonable small game getter at reasonable distance. Plus you still have the 7.62x54r for larger game.
