Perfect Survival Gun

So whats the main difference between 22lr and 22wmag ?
You guys are making me rethink the whole 223, or 308 bug out rifle but I want to make sure I have the right tool for the job.
Enlighten me.

well, you can go look up muzzle velocities for both rounds out of pistols and rifles...

but the short form is that GENERALLY a lot of people consider .22LR good to 200 yds, but half of that for really good use on small stuff. 300 yds for .22WMR, and again, about half that to 2/3 that, as it's pretty flat flying.

.22WMR is a little bigger round, more powerful, and really excels out of a rifle. should drop a lot of game nicely up to and including deer (but please be a GOOD shot). pest-control? it will explode squirrels i'm told. "not much meat left if you use hollow points"...

there's also .17HMR, which some people prefer.

.22LR is more common though, smaller, much cheaper, and for a "survival gun" would be a good choice. you can pack more in a jar :>

.22WMR is a lot of fun though, esp out of a semi-automatic pistol :D

The .22WMR hits surprisingly hard out of a rifle, and I damn sure wouldn't want to get shot with it out of a pistol either. But, I'm thinking of a survival situation as in feeding yourself and/or family. For that, I'd want to be able to carry a significant amount of ammo. The .22 would win my vote on that point alone. You go much bigger and you're wasting meat on small game anyway. It will take a deer with a head shot.

I have found what i concider to be the perfect survival gun (for now). The other day a buddy wanted me to try his Smith and Wesson Govenor it is a great improvement to the Taurus Judge. It is a six shot revolver on light weight material that will accomadate many different calibres.
  • 45 long colt
  • 410 shotgun
  • 45 acp with moon clips
  • 45 win mag
  • and 454 casull (for the insane)
I have shot all calibres listed above except 454. I found the gun to be very accurate. It is a vast improvement to the Taurus. I found that it functioned flawlesly with all aformentiond ammos.
It is a weapon that you can use to hunt small game, large game, dangerous preadtors of the 2 and 4 legged kind.

I will be carring this revolver with my tomahawk, BK2 and Bk5 on my quest to prove Bigfoot is real.

The Governor is a sweet weapon. I have one and love it. It's worth mentioning that shooting .454 through your Governor would be an extremely bad idea. As in a

"KABOOM! Go to the hospital!" type bad idea. Even if the thing didn't explode, it would probably just about break your wrist from the recoil.

I like 22WMR, but the cost increase / ammo availability does not offset the power increase vs 22LR.

Honestly, for pure survival it is trapping over hunting any day. When you hunt, you can only hunt - a trap works while you are sleeping, cutting wood, building shelter, etc.

In a survival situation, tactics that are normally not used (or may be frowned on by the DNR)come into play - trotlines, leg snares, etc. I would also not hesitate to hunt at night, spotlight, over bait, etc. Sportsman goes right out the window post-SHTF.

*paperairplane does not advocate these methods during normal times and advises you to practice conservation in accordance with ethical hunting standards and your local laws*

Nice!!!!

Good call on that disclaimer. :D

if you don't carry it with you when the SHTF, it's not a survival gun...

theoretical best gun for living in the bush vs "what you have".

course, if you CARRY the best gun for all purposes... then you win.

if you don't carry a gun, well, then you have no gun.

right?
