personal favorite knives under 50 bucks?

sak01.jpg

I dig my Victorinox Swiss Army Knives. I always have a Vic Rambler on my keys and usually a Vic Tinker in my left front pocket. Gotta love a knife that doesn't leave a fella thirsty... :D Hands down, the most useful knife to be had under $50.

Lots of solid one-handers out there to be had under the $50 mark but, in my opinion, the most impressive option is the Ontario RAT-1...

Cold Steel Voyagers, the newly released SAK Classics in the animal patterns (Zebra, Tiger, Leopard, Giraffe), plus the Alox Farmer. And for 20 bucks, the Benchmade Monochrome.

Mora, Opinel, Condor, Svord, Douk Douk...I have too many favorites in that price range to list! :D

Crkt ripple is $30 and the blade is very functional and practical I think it's misleading due to the handles but I love it

My favorite knives at different price points:

< $10: Boker Sandalwood, Boker Ergo
< $15: Mora Craftline Allround
< $20: KaBar Dozier Folding Hunter, Kershaw Chill
< $25: Buck Vantage Select
< $35: Buck Vantage Avid, Kershaw Skyline, Kershaw Leek
< $40: Kershaw Blur (I can only get them on eBay auction for this price)

I really like the standard silver, stainless-steel Kershaw Scallion--bought it after the Chive and Leek and it's by far my favorite of the three.

The earlier FRN Byrd Cara Cara with the swoopy-beak blade and omnivorous opening eye, the feather-themed handle with four eyelets, and the amazingly sharp edge--I'm delighted by its design yet stupefied that it cost only $25 (I think). Embarrassed, even, when I wonder about the quality of the knife in relation to the quality of life for the Chinese workers who made it. I really don't know the economic/labor aspects of its production, but I wonder how I was able to buy it for so little. I do know the Endura is a better knife in a couple respects, but mine leaves me cold in comparison with this Cara Cara's character.

Cheers,
Isaeus

And expensive!

My current under 50 fave is the Kershaw Baby Boa.

yeah you like that? It's got an attractive look but that damn flip is so strong and with the knife being so small it almost flips itself out of my hand! I had to sent it back.

As much as I'm ashamed to admit it, one of my favorite knives I owned under $50 was a cheap $10 Pakistani W49 style bowie I got as a b-day gift when I was a teen. While the overall fit and finish left much to be desired, the funny thing is back then I knew nothing about different steels, or heat treatment or even how to properly treat a knife (I used to think the bigger the blade, the stronger it was) and I actually put that knife through stuff I wouldn't even dare put my better made and more expensive knives through knowing what I do now and it held up pretty well considering it's origins. While most of us, including myself, give Pakistan made knives alot of crap (and not unjustly either) I guess even cheap Pakistani made blades can produce a gem every now and then. Sadly I misplaced it during a move. Other favorite knives under $50 I own or have owned are

CRKT M16-10Z. My current EDC knife. After spraying a little WD-40 on it, I can now flip the blade out without even having to flick my wrist at all. It's almost like a switchblade now.
Buck 119
Buck 110
Ontario Pilot's Survival knife

And if you want to count them, my Ontario and Martindale machetes.

As stated before, Kershaw has some of the best value knives available right now.

I am also a Spyderco Native fan if you can find one under $50 … I just picked up a lightly used one on the Exchange forum for $40 and that's hard to beat …
