Phill Hartsfield Fans?

The fact that some people don't like his knives sounds like sour grapes. He seems to get more for what they see as a roughly finished knife than the shiny ones they make or buy.

I thought a knife was meant to cut things, not be shiny as well.

What are you saying, everybody should like his knives? I have absolutely no desire to get one. As I said before, I handled some and they are not my kind of knife. It's not the price that stops me from buying one. Even if they went for $100 it wouldn't change anything.

Hey jack76,
Can you post or email me who made the tantos in the picture you posted. The two larger ones in particular are really sweet looking. Thanks

I handled the same Hartsfield that spyken did and it was extremely well balanced and felt very very light for a large blade of about 12 in.

Cutting with it was a joy. Cuts cleanly effortlessly and no... had no other chisel grind blades for comparison, just the grinds that spyken mentioned earlier.

I think it was actually 12.1" blade length, Tet...and nicely shaped like a cutlass:thumbup:  still get goosebumps on how well that chisel grind cut!

Though a knife is meant to cut things, it is up to each individual person to decide what degree of finish they want that knife to have. If someone likes well finished knives, who are you to say that they are wrong to do so. It shouldn't bother the people that like a maker's knives one little bit if I don't care for the way that maker's knives are made. There is nothing wrong with liking knives that have a very basic finish, just like there is nothing wrong with liking knives that have a mirror finish. There is also nothing wrong in stating that preference. Those that read the comments can make there own decisions on what importance to give them.

There are many knives that cut very well that don't hold any interest for me. If a knife is going to cost me what one from Phil Hartsfield will cost, it will have to look like it is worth that much. If the looks aren't aren't important to you, then my opinion shouldn't matter to you.

I love Phill's knives and out of all the knives I've owned both custom and production his always have cut the best for me. The rough finish I believe accually hides user marks that would be impossible to hide on a mirror finish knife. From a performance stand point -they are like a Ferrari, they have great edge holding ability and I strop mine back to razor sharpness if I ever feel the edge slipping (hardly ever). That being said, they have to be your cup of tea, and if you don't like his syle there are a thousand other great knives to choose from.
