Man you guys are really hitting it out of the park

Great looking blade Adam

What a great turnout

Thanks Joe,

I am going with a more of a Hartsfield-esq finish on this tribute knife for the fun of it.

Sorry, Doug - just caught your question. Unless you're using a water quench, usually there's no sori unless it was formed intentionally when the blade was profiled.

To more indirectly answer your question, and I think address what you're asking a bit better, though, the spine of these knives are almost always dead straight, but the contoured grinds impart a sense of curvature, albeit an optical illusion, however. Is that what you meant?

Question for the aficionados,
is there sori on CG blades ?

Doug

Thank you, Matt.
I was referring to the curvature of the spine to the kissaki.
I know a lot of the Jpz. terminology just tend to confuse myself using them. :)
I was under the impression this is what happens after/during the heat treat process, as on a katana or a wakizashi.

Doug

And you'd be right, but that's only a phenomenon that happens with high carbon steels and water quench. In fact, there's a tendency for the same steel to curve DOWNWARD in an oil quench.

Tool steels like A2 and CPM3V tend to stay right where you left them, more or less. :)

This is a Tanto by David Mirabile that shows what is being discussed I believe

Notice the angle of the handle (Tsuka) to the blade ...... Than add the blade curvature

The Handle looks kicked back so to speak

This is a style that I believe echoes back to 17 Century Japan

At that time is war'ing was business ....... Business was good

IMHO the handle kicked back even though not as esthetically pleasing to the eye does facilitate cutting very well

This pic of it in its saya really shows the handle angle well

I would like to see a KWAIKEN that exhibits this with a ton of curvature in the blade and a small tip :)

Thoughts ?

This Cable Damascus Wak from Michael Bell exhibits it

And so does this beautiful Wak from David Mirabile

More thanks, that was very succinctly explained.

That's why some guys forge 1095, then ice water quench and if they don't hear it crack or see it
on finished blade it's a superblade ?

Sorry, Joe, you posted while I was composing.
More fantastique from you. :)

Doug

Here's a demo done by Dan Pfanstiel showing how it happens:

Doug, not sure how much it makes it a superblade, but rather imparts an additional geometry that assists in the slice.

If I'm not mistaken, the first kwaiken you got from me has a touch of sori to it, just as Joey was asking for.:)

Now someone make a jacked up KWAIKEN :)

Or at least a drawing so we can see how much is to much :)

I'm sitting at an all day Volleyball Tournament so I've got time :)
