Photo competition #3, with a difference -WINNERS ANNOUNCED + PICS OF PRIZES

Well, my entry will be rather mundane compared to lots of you. No sandy beaches or delicious food, just work. Kitchen renovation to be exact. Trading out our old sink for a new one.

Breakfast first. Extra sharp cheddar and wheat thins. :)

Now back to work. Stripping the old caulking away.
IMAGE_1000000994.JPG

Once I had the new sink in I had to put new contact paper under the sink.

A little light stropping and it's back to razor again.

meako, you and fes certainly deserve points for bravery. The photos are from one of my hikes on an island in Maine. My friend claims she set the stone chairs up shortly before our hike. ;)

medicevans, nice work with the cheese and crackers... good job with the sink too. :p

Ok, so I have decided to take back my previous entry. I was reading some of Carl's tales and he tells of a certain Scout meeting where one of the boys had a few hairs on his chin. After threatening to make the boy shave with his knife if he doesn't shave before the next meeting, Mr. Van proves that it can be done by shaving with his knife in front of the boys.

So, in honor of Mr. Van:

Stropping

Enlisting my wife's help on these next few. Surprisingly, she didn't even laugh when I told her what I wanted her to do. I think she just getting used to my weirdness. Lol

Wiped a bit of the shaving cream away to prove I'm not just wiping a smooth face.

IMAGE_1000001005.JPG

Not too horrible, not perfect, but good 'nuf for gubmint work. :)
IMAGE_1000001006.JPG

This shave brought to you by Arko, Omega, and Imperial.
IMAGE_1000001008.JPG

**To be fair, I honed the blade up to shaving sharp on my super fine Lansky, then switched to my 1000 Chosera, the 4000 Norton, then 8000 Norton, the plain leather strop. I should have stropped it longer pre-shave, but I stropped 50 laps afterwards and it would treetop arm hair.

Also, I shave with a straight or a GEM 1912/OCMM/Clog-Pruf every time, so while this was new, the motions weren't completely foreign.

Hey Medicevans
Nice going.Your are right it is in the motions of the shave.Vaiiry Carefully..
Out of interest you should check out the movie "Chopper" stars Eric Bana (the hulk, the romulan captain out of startrek, hoot in blackhawkdown).
Its the same hairstyle.
cheers

Hey Medicevans, that would be a GEC #66 serpentine jack knife.
It's a funny little carry and a very pocketable piece.

medicevans, your previous entry was awesome and I thoroughly enjoyed it... not sure the wording in my previous post was the best but I was joking around because of the double meaning of "cut the cheese". ...probably not a good idea to post while pre drinking... actually, I'm not sure it's a good idea to post now when back from the bars. ;) I'm envious of your sharpening skills though. I have a Norton 1000 and 4000 water stones but don't have the 8000. I mostly use them for my plane blades and chisels though. I shave with a Mercator safety razor. Looks like you got a respectable shave with that Imperial!! I need to give straight razors a try.

Meako, I saw "Chopper"...Awesome movie!

Medivecans thats an awesome job with a slippy there mate!...alot to be said for them good stones methinx?? (and a steady hand)...great pics and Chopper would be proud!.......FES

Ha! Fes you beat me to it my friend...I was just about to make a comparison to Chopper! what we need is Medi to cut half his ears off as Chopper did though - the he truely would deserve the reference as CHOPPER!
In all seriousness medi-thank you for your fantastic effort and great pics!..this is what Forums is about - participating members who love knives, thank you guys..this means one hang af a lot to me
Duncan

Hehehe......cut the cheese. That's funny. I didn't pick that up the first time. Lol.

I'm going to have to check out this movie I look like, although if half my ears go missing, 'twil be a complete accident.

Fes, you ought to get a Norton 8k. A few swipes on it after your 4k and you planes would be even more scary sharp.

I was given a hone set of a norton 220/1k and 4k/8k, they are quarter sizes of regular hones. I'm going to throw them in my go bag for quick touchups at work/out and about.

Supraten, you really need to try straight shaving! You already know how to make lather, which is a learning curve, and know how to use zero pressure while shaving, straight shaving isn't that hard. Look up whippeddog straights, Larry's a great guy and will get you set up with a user grade straight, strop, and pasted balsa for around $50ish. It is too much fun not to! I shave with a pre-1854 Fenney Tally Ho, and have a ~1830 John Barber I need to get off my butt about and order some ivory for scales for.

Btw, you don't have to worry about posting while predrinking or post-drunking, but it is a good idea to come back a few hours later and check to make sure you didn't make any crazy bets or cut off half your ears or anything. Lol

Duncan, you let me know if this is too off topic, since it's your thread, an I'll delete them, no hard feelings.

Since there are so many rugby fans on this thread (Go All Blacks) thought I might post some of the division III mens team I play for, the Champaign County Flatlanders F.C.

No I definitely remember him saying to drown the thread with pics.

A recent game of hide and seek with the kids in our "backyard". They always seem to give up when its my go. And I'm not even trying to hide.:D

Camo eh??.....One of my favourite places on earth (Kaimanawas)...the little stream in front of me is the home of a rare breed of fish..Liberated here in 1887? for the gentry of the day to fish...Apparently there are none left in their original homeland.....PURE Scottish brown trout....a lovely fish......(cant see in pic but im carrying my DH Russell and 2 slippys)......FES

That's a nice fish, FES!

There's a small stream that runs into the harbor in the back... On the harbor side, there's nothing as nice as that trout... mostly just minnows and mussels (taste great steamed)... and swarms of the invasive green crabs at night. You can eat the green crabs but it would take A LOT of them to make a meal. The larger stone crabs are further out from shore.

Here's a photo of a green crab... eating(?) a pine cone.

After breeding season there are also tons of the little elvers (baby American eels) migrating from the salt water to the fresh water. Fisherman show up at night with elaborate nets to catch them... the eels are sent off to China and grown to maturity, then sent to Japan to be made into unagi (barbecued eel) and then sent back to the US to be sold in sushi restaurants. As a "flatlander" (someone from out of town) I was shocked the first time the fisherman showed up in the "back yard" and confronted them... :p But these guys know what they're doing and the DNR stakes out a fishing area along the shoreline.

There's no hunting in this area and there are tons of deer. Here's an uncommon white deer (not albino).

Although there's no hunting on the island, snow ball blasters are legal. :p

Nice Wharncliffe Opinel!

I'm in Ken's home state so it only seems appropriate that I should be totin' one of his whittlers. On the road, I haven't had much time for whittlin' but here's a photo of a bird that I carved when I was 6 or 7.

whittler.jpg

I did get a chance to use the knife this morning.

Hi Jake!

Nice job on that little bird. You really have skills for this.

BTW: I wanted to make a wharnie - but a sheepfoot came out ;)

Kind regards
Andi
