Fes-i found out off "one of the mums at cubs" apparently these deer are infested with TB!
not only that but stag meat is all tough n chewy!
there y go.
Personally I think they are prime lookin beasts with little in the way of health problems.
The local butcher has indicated to me that in the past such deer have been prepared for food.
Urban Myth?
See what I mean about the antlers being "cooked" ? your one is velvety still.I say that because I got one under the same "illegal shoot slow death" circumstances a couple of years ago that was still just a spiker. They went to a mates carving set handles .
The knife was a shed antler which has been chewed , the fork from the velvet spiker.
cheers mate.

VERY true!...samba and rusa are very coarse meat...make great mince and salamis though..very distinct flavour. Here in NZ there is no (limit?) when we can shoot deer.....FES

Meako...very cool pics!......i find a few chewed antlers each roar..i have been told that they do this cos of the nutrients that are in the antler ....food for thought?.......FES

I worked outside all afternoon clearing a flower bed that we had let get overgrown while my wife was ill.

I bought this old knife for $5 at an antique store a while ago. It originally had nasty hardwood scales, but I took them off to use the knife as a pattern. I have been using it in the flower beds as a great tool. I'd like to remake it in a really abrasion resistant steel. Hope this is traditional enough.

Here's the bed. It took a couple hours to get this far.

I don't know what this kind of grass is, but I couldn't pull it. I had to cut it from underneath the roots and roll it up like sod.

Fes I was told by a NZ possum hunter/farmer/miner
who visits family round the corner that they eat the shed antlers for the minerals they contain. If you think how quick they grow it makes sense must be full of good stuff.
Mate I just read my earleir post and it would seem to imply that you shoot illegally. Not what I meant. My Apologies. Also has that head got three spikes on on side and two on the other?

Hey Meako...please dont worry about any implications towards our friend Sean ( Fes), as they are most likely true:D
There is an outstanding arrest warrant out on this guy for killing cute little Quails :)

MEAKO....there is no such thing as illegaly shooting feral deer in NZ (there are no rules)...Yes its a 7 point Samba (506 pound gralloched)...traditionally only 6 pointers,so quite unique.Another fortnight and it wouldve been fully hard.Such a waste!........fes

Oh its two against one now is it? bloody kiwis.)
Fes I hung the velevety ones out on the fence for about six weeks, scorched the velvet off in a fire, they were starting to look OK hanging in a bush in the garden and one mysteriously disappeared.
Imagine if they were all finished growing and shrpened up-what a prize.

If I owned a gun however I could be tucking into venison sausages right now after this mornings stalk. They've started roaring too.
cheers.
Duncan hope we have'nt "deerstroyed" your thread.sorry about that.

Last night I was washing the little ones and didn't realize that the shampoo bottle was new. Had run grab this little gem to pop the top. It's an Imperial pen from the 50s era. The edges look like they have been ran over with a file. It's not very sharp, but it was handy.

Well, I´m going with this setup today - Dad´s 60th birthday celebration and I wear my traditional clothing - we call it Tracht

IMG_1730.jpg

The Jagdnicker is in my leather pants for today... there´s a little space for it, so that the handles looks outside at the right side of the pants

IMG_1731.jpg

And Mr. Humppa with that clothes...

IMG_1734.jpg

I know, I´m not a tall man ... but broad :D

Kind regards
Andi

I dare say the party is over by now, but happy Birthday to your Dad!
Great picture!

So, I said I would debut it here. This is the slipjoint I'm working on. This is the only teaser shot you guys get until it's done. I'm only showing it in Trad Forum, and only on this thread. I'll post over on ShopTalk when it's all done.

It will be barehead (single bolster) and I'm still up in the air as to bone or black paper micarta scales.

Thank you guys! Well, those clothes are typical bavarian outfit. The pants are made of heavy cattle leather. In the earlier days, this kind of clothes were the same as we wear jeans and cargo pants nowadays.

I like that outfit... ;)

Kind regards
Andi

Thus picture may upset some of the purists in the room, but in the end, my knife is a tool. I snapped the knob off my battery charger. My wife's truck was dead, and I had no time at all. I grabbed my knife and switched the little post and away we went. No harm to the knife. I don't usually twist/pry with my knife, but what are you going to do when you absolutely need to?
