When I was around 10 years old I got a Case model 216-5 fixed blade because it was cheaper than the Buck model it copied. The Buck logo is/was the hammer hitting the knife cutting a nail. After having the Case a couple of years I decided to see if the Case could do the thing portrayed in the logo. On the first hit the blade nicely broke into two pieces thus ending my experiment rather abruptly.

I lost all interest in cutting nails with a knife rather early in my life. :D

Would be a great shame to actually break that little fella beyond the point that Nathan could no longer repair it.

What is the actual and historical purpose of using a knife to cut nails? Does it come from the phrase, "tougher than nails"?

Not much purpose I can think of other than to demonstrate durability. I do it as a part of an edge stability/durability test in HT development and started adding it to my videos to prove that the tweaks to the heat treat we make to enhance edge stability and edge retention hasn't made the 3V fragile.

It does show you something. It isn't just a parlor trick, it is legitimately informative and repeatable when applied to carefully controlled geometry.

I use my own 3" EDC with a hammer to cut through the steel straps when opening a pallet. That's hard on a knife and probably pretty similar to cutting a nail.

We're probably gonna shoot the video for the HDFK N.A.S.K. tomorrow and I think I'll cut a 1/4-20 bolt instead.

^ Epic

Edited to add: the operative phrase as stated: "applied to carefully controlled geometry"... I take it being as not all D3V HT being the same.

Oh man don't destroy the poor thing! Send it to me (along with my other 2)

I'm not going to destroy anything. It will be fine. I intend to keep it after the demo for use around the shop. About the only way to break it would involve a cheater bar and a vise.
