Really?
Honestly just curious. Have hiked in areas with cats, but my only sighting was as a child when we noticed one briefly following us at a distance (well, a few leaps and bounds for him/her). But it let off after being spotted.

you said it yourself- when a cat attacks, it's unlikely you're going to see it coming until it's on you. Most folks who I've read about successfully fighting off a cat did so with a knife, a rock, or whatever was at hand. With a gun, combined with the cqc aspect of a cat attack, you stand a pretty good chance of shooting yourself by accident

this is one of the reasons for DEK1's existence

If one's being stalked by a big kitty without any awareness of being followed, then the one is well and truly foooqued! When one crosses path with a big cat at a distance, using deadly force ought to be the last option if the person happens to be armed. If it comes down to the unfortunate instance of grappling, I just like you prefer a knife. But then again, I'm an 8th degree triple net black belt in Krav Bubba :D

I read that Alaskan guides prefer short barreled revolvers for bear attacks because you can fire them even if the bear is on top of you, and you’re pressing it up against the bear. I would rather have a three or four inch 44 Mag or 454 Casul than a knife any day against a bear or a lion. :D

You need to getcha some firepower Matty!:cool:

Don't forget that I live in a densely populated Cali executive type of neighborhood with a sheriff deputy hanging out like a bum on my front porch's wicker sofa :D

For a Cali resident, I'm decently armed with 3 handguns and a shotgun but if any of them heavens forbid go off in anger, I'm sure that I will not only blow my poor old Mom to smithereens living 3 rooms away, I will also be taking out both my neighbor's teen daughters in addition to their dogs and cats living on the other side of the adjacent wall

Yup, the woman on the Life Below Zero program who got attacked by a bear in the years past, always packs a revolver when in the Alaskan Tundra. In your case, I'd be more worried about them crocs than bears or lions, Yer Crocodile Gussee :D

I don’t think anyone was suggesting a knife would be adequate against a (brown) bear.
Met several people carrying (high-powered) revolvers in Alaska. Not sure how much use they’d be if the bear is already on top of you. I imagine it’s all over pretty quickly if you’re trying to fight rather than playing dead.

ETA: In cat territory, I believe someone recommended keeping small children at the front and back of the group, respectively, as a precautionary measure....
Maybe I got that wrong :D

Nah, most knives are pretty much useless against those kinda bears with such thick hides, bones and skulls. Best to just wish that the bear knows what it is doing and makes it quick. +1 on playing dead, at least that gets you in the mood :D

I don’t know, but a knife worked pretty well for Leo in the Revenant after he lost his revolver! :p

I will take my chances of shooting myself rather than being mauled or eaten! That's how I|Roll:D Looking forward to the DEK1, but would prefer 4 1/2 inches of steel that SHOOTS in a a real world scenario:D Never bought a knife as a defensive tool or weapon (That includes the Shiv and UF):p I prefer a chance of winning a confrontation:cool:

Parallel to that line of thinking , would you not be just as likely to cut yourself with a knife by accident?

Most of us who work in the bush/cat country carry a fixed blade on the front of the cruiser vest for this reason. In bear country, 12ga AND bear spray. As much as I dislike bear spray, it works. Last year my work partner got charged by a decent size male grizzly and the spray did the job. Guns only really work if you have space/time, and the experience and time on the range training under stress (read adrenaline and shaking hands; even buddy who is a very avid hunter and shooter had the shakes real bad after that).

How about some bells and whistles, literally? Most wild predators just tend to hide and cower when they hear those juggling bells unless a poor sap happens to accidentally get close to them while they're coupling or when a momma bear is the leading her cute baby bears!

Sometimes you don’t want to attract any attention to yourself and just hope the cougars don’t notice you going by. Bells won’t help, even wedding rings won’t!

Bear bells and bad singing are probably your best defense....or offense I should say.

Depending on what song you choose to sing - it may well ward off any living creature from approaching you!

All joking aside - I did a 20-mile backpacking trip on remote Vancouver Island in fall '16. I felt pretty vulnerable the whole time, since I was not allowed any firearms/sidearms, nor could I have any fires in the park where I was camping. I didn't see another soul for the duration of my trek through the woods. I did have a can of Bear Spray and some jingle bells on my pack.

After I had accomplished my goal (a day early) and was calculating the route back to my truck to see if I would have enough time to make it back before dark. Within 5 minutes of deciding to pack up camp, I heard a pack of wolves (assumably with a fresh kill) whooping and hollering something evil - not even 1/4 mile west from my location. This helped to reaffirm my decision to head out. After packing-up, I took one last stroll around the beautiful (Arnica) lake that I had called home for the last 2 nights. It was then that I spotted a black bear across the lake from me. He was just walking the water's edge, and seemed uninterested in me. I made a racket and started singing Eddie Money's "Two Tickets to Paradise" - this seemed to do the trick as he looked in my direction before clambering back up into the woods and out of sight from me.

This made the journey back down the mountain pretty exciting - I kept looking over my shoulder, or expecting that bear to bust out of the woods in front of me. None of that happened, luckily, but it did keep me alert and helped remind me not to take nature for granted. I was hiking in THEIR backyard and trespassing on THEIR property.

Sadly or perhaps I should say fortunately, I'm now even older than some of our local 2-legged cougars. You on the other hand, are still considered tender enough to prey on ;)

Interesting read and helluva feat, thanks Lorien. That guy sounds like he should have immediately gone and bought a lottery ticket.

I'll admittedly make the dangerous mistake of making an assumption, but based on your gun laws in Canada, the choice of a proper knife is clear for you as it is the only realistic option. Elsewhere, however, I would have to question the validity of that selection as the preferred choice/best option for defending one's self from a lion attack. While I applaud the old fella for his pluck and fight and congratulate him on winning, I can only look at that as him being either extremely lucky or that lions are very easy to kill. I believe it is the former more so than the latter.

Lastly, not really here to debate lion fightin'. Draw some shit up and get Nate to make it so I can buy it will ya?
