It can be hard to tell with indoor lighting, but are those maroon linen scales on your FK and FK2?

I'm also curious if they might have a black micarta liner? (But I'm thinking that they don't have it.)

I think the FK is Antique micarta and the FK2 is Westinghouse. No liners.

I wish I had taken pics of where my fk2 bit the hell out of my finger. Cutting summer sausage at work and slipped off the heel. Cut straight to the bone!
It was so sharp I thought maybe I didn't get myself.... then I bled all over my desk and keyboard

Wow, cool rig. I’d put the Kydex towards my body though. Then again, I’m too fat to carry any knife like that.

It's the least harsh on my baby-soft skin.... and also the orientation for OWB that I prefer.

So, I know I have posted something similar in the past. That said, I just received a new DEK2 and was reminded just how much the micarta can change colors with time and use.

On the left, is the new set of OD Green micarta scales on the DEK2. On the right, is what I like to refer to as “OG” Green micarta on my trusted EDC1.

These are the same scale material.


Crazy, huh? The DEK2 is literally out of the box as of yesterday. The EDC1 is at least six years old and has seen almost daily carry and use since I received it, only starting to catch a break now and then once the first DEK1s came out. The EDC scales were never treated with anything to intentionally darken or patina them. They have, however, in those years seen varying amounts of sunlight, oxygen, sweat, blood, water, soap, fruit juices, plant saps, hydraulic fluid, oils, greases, fuels, dirt, salt water, and who knows what else.

So, if you have ever wondered how the OD green scales age, this is how it happens if you actually carry and use the knife a lot.

I got the scales just a few years ago but I bought the knife from Nathan in 2015 so I'd assume sometime right around then. Not sure how much the previous owner used them but I feel like they were in slightly better condition when I got 'em than today. They might just need a good washing, too.
