Pics and first impressions of the Lahar

Thanks for posting the pics kneedeep. I like the looks of the Lahar and the build quality appears to be excellent.

I just have one thing bugging me. For a knife that comes from Tim Galyean and has nice flowing curves in the blade and handle, the pocket clip is pretty dull, like it was right out of the old parts bin. Perhaps this is a function of the price point on the knife. I know that not everything can be a newly designed component. But when I compare it to the signature clips on the JYD models and clips on other Kershaw models that have more shape and flair to them, the Lahar clip just seems really plain by comparison. It's not really a detraction from the knife, just a matter of personal taste, and I know there are plenty of folks who will prefer a clip that's more plain than stylized. It's just that it stood out to a large degree for me.

Jujigatame, you're welcome for the pics.

I know what you mean about the clip. It is a pretty basic clip, but I think that the overall design of the knife is a little more businesslike than most of the knives with elaborate clips. It makes the big knife a little more low key, when clipped in your pocket.

2brothers, the phillips screws caught me a bit off guard too. They look just like the ones on Spyderco's.

Exactly. My Military and BM AFCK have those screws. I cannot stand them
when I need to adjust my clip or take apart for semi-annual cleaning. :)
The heads just don't hold up to the turning.

Me likey the Torx. I would even like E-Torx screws too. (external)
That would be sweet to have spline head screws on all my clips.

I haven't put the Lahar through any real use yet other than cutting open a few small boxes today (my girlfriend forgot her Scallion and Mini Mojo today, and had to borrow my JYD).

I have spent a fair amount of time practicing flipping it and only the tip of my index finger ever really got uncomfortable.

The overall silhouette of the handle is a comfortable shape for me. The g10 scales are flat, with a fine texture. As I mentioned in the original post the scales only have a small radius at the edge. This gives the knife a chunky feel.
It would be interesting to see what it would feel like if it had more rounded scales like a Spec Bump.

One thing I did notice, is that the edges of the liners are so perfectly ground, that the inside edges of the liners are sharp.

Anyone else seriously use their Lahar, that cares to share their thoughts on its ergonomics in use?

did you get the JYD back? from what you've told us, she likes to steal your "steel" (yeah im sry for the bad pun).

congrats on the 300 posts

Yup, got it back, she's hooked on the SpeedSafe of her other knives.

Hmm, thanks, didn't even notice that was my 300th, posted it from an iPhone. :D

But then I wouldn't need to carry the three other knives I always have on me.

Wow. The fit and finish on that knife is what I would describe as being "absolutely perfect"

Thanks a lot for the excellent pics!

Exactly what I was thinking, my Spyderco Manix actualy had a hairline gap in the spine after lock open, quite disapointing. Every Kershaw that I own is/has been very precise and well finnished.

Looks like a real nice knife!

Just a couple questions:
How thick is the blade, and how thick are the liners?

Not 100% sure I trust my digital caliper, but the blade is measuring at 0.120" (3.0 mm, metric gauge since its Japanese?) and the liner seems to be measuring around 0.050" to 0.058" (can't get a good measurement).

Maybe Thomas or Tim can chime in with the official specs?

And yes, it is a really nice knife. If you get the opportunity to handle one, don't pass it up (be careful, you might not want to give it back).

The other week, a customer spotted the clip on my pocket and asked about it. Turned out he collects knives (customs only), so I let him take a look at it. He was quite impressed with it, and commented on the finish and build. He said he'd look into Kershaw since he needed some knives he would actually use.

I'm sold getting a Lahar this week, you do better ad's than Kershaw themselves  This is exactly why I like this forum so much, well done!

I just received mine. I love it. Maybe a tad bit more than my Junkyard Dog II. But they both see plenty of use.

Thanks for the complements guys! I just take pictures and describe what I see, Tim and Kershaw really deserve the complements for designing and manufacturing such a great knife (at such a great price too).

You sold me. I just ordered a Lahar and JYD2. After getting my Storm 2 and seeing the quality and price the Lahar and JYD2 just had to make to my stash.

That looks awesome. The handle looks very ergonomic. For those that have one, does it feel as good as it looks? A clip point recurve to boot. I've gotta get me one of those.

I see that it is a limited production. Are these going to stay in the lineup, or are they a one time "sprint" run?

I really like the ergos on my Lahar. It's definitely a worker, but it opens soooo smoothly and the lock engages with real authority. One of my buddies at work was asking if I knew of a good all around working knife that won't break the bank. He showed me some of the models he was interested in and I showed him my Lahar. He immediately ordered one and it came last week. He loves it.

I got mine for just under $45 a couple of months ago (I don't think the seller knew what they had). Now they are getting harder to find and the prices all seem to be going up. If you see one at a good price I say GET IT! You won't be sorry.
