PIF-ERS just talking shop

Just checking. It can be interesting and fun to wait and see what comes up . I have a couple blades I use but would Pif for right one. It gets tempting to try something else
Right? Unless it has some unique gadget factor the new smell wears off pretty quick for me;)

I have no idea. Had nothing to do with good hearted people. Let's drag there names throw the mud because reasons.

Why do you think this thread has done so well?
Honestly, the "keeping value" did a decent part, but mostly keeping a running list if I recall was the excellent idea of bikerector bikerector and that has been a big driving force. Knowing what all was put up is helpful to a new person stumbling in!
At times when the offerings had diminished some very generous members were willing to rekindle it. Let's face it, we have seen some massively positive acts of generosity here. Another factor in success has been the basic banter and interactions in the thread. You're going to be more willing to do stuff for people when you know them better.

Hey now I know I'm crazy. I didn't snag the Adamas Auto when I could have. Man, I guess that means I really am holding out for a Manix 2 or a ZT0566. Missed that by 4 minutes lol!

I may have something similar that would really interest you. Woodysone didn't want it but I could be convinced to send it your way since you probably have nearly as much good as him keeping the goodwill going.

I think this is spot on. The list proved very useful and helpful and has only gotten better. Like any good "non-profit", some management is needed. The list was a simple way to keep things organized, as I'm a bit of a nut for organization or else I get way off into the stands, way beyond left field. I think the organization of the thread is what really helps, between the list, the guidelines, and the quick offer to bring newcomers up to speed.

The massive generosity has been very good as well, especially at kickstarting the thread when things are slow.

The super crazy, ultra-mega, out of control, enthusiasm more recently certainly isn't slowing things down much either. I'm a little curious to see how long it holds up, but this is the longest string of heavy action, and more action, than the thread has seen in quite some time.

Best of all, the thread is mostly about selflessness and giving. Sure, we claim things we like or are interested in, but we often give as much or more than we've claimed and many of us will quickly jump in to offer something if someone "misses out" on something they really wanted. The recent throwing of eggs because "I didn't get here fast enough" is a bit unpleasant and not in the theme of the thread. IMO, we should congratulate the fast fingers because it's not about what we can get but what we can give. It's like Christmas, but all year around.

Lastly, because I don't know how to write short posts, I've met a lot of good folks on the PIF thread, and really throughout other parts of the forum, and that has been amazingly fun and great. I always prefer to meet people in person but our circle of influence and relationships certainly can be expanded beyond our logistical limitations through technology. I've really not seen another forum community as generous as what we've seen in the PIF thread, and that includes probably a dozen or so forums from cycling to outdoors activities to motorcycles. I'll admit, the motorcycle forum was pretty generous as well but often offering time over gadgets, like helping install parts and such.

With that, carry on doing what you're doing. I can't keep up with all the chatter so I've stayed away from this side thread as my daily life doesn't allow that much time in front of this screen (usually working on other things) but it's always splendid to check in and see things are well, even if there is some challenges along the way.

With that out of the way... what are all y'alls thoughts on OTFs? Been considering adding one to the arsenal to see what they are all about... Held back because Ohio law is purposefully vague on knives, and I assume OTF is going to connote "weapon" vs something like a GB1 should the proverbial excrement hit the rotating cooling device...

Sounds like Microtech and Benchmade are the brands to look at?

Guardian tactical puts out some damn decent ones, and Heretic as well:thumbsup:. OTFs can be super handy EDCs as long as you're aware of the limitations.

I had an ultratech OTF and a cheap lighting as well. Absolutely LOVED the concept. Never left the house as I was paranoid about walking around with one in the 'burbs of NJ. You basically have to be on your way fishing or hunting to carry one. Which means you either have to have your fishing license on you or your tackle in the trunk lol. So much fun, I wouldn't go stabbing them into a tree trunk or anything but as an EDC goes its the ultimate one hander.

Yeah, it won't be very practical in OH until Knife Rights puts enough pressure on our elected officials. They have a bill put together... will see how it goes.

OTF's are the ultimate one-hand opening and closing knife if you get the dual action. I wish I still had mine but MI law stated that anything coming out the front was still illegal when they allowed autos, so I shouldn't have owned it, or carried it (we can own many things that we can't carry). OTF's are pretty much considered a "stabbing implement" which is immediately considered a weapon and outlawed. The only weapon we're allowed to legal carry for self-defense seems to be a gun or some non-lethal sprays. I can't remember if tasers are allowed, but I'm reasonably sure that projectile tasers aren't. It's pretty stupid that we can't legally carry something for defense, especially when the region that caused so much of the laws is one of the most violent in the nation (SE Michigan/Detroit Metro area).

If anyone offers up a Matt Diskin Fire I will be soooooo upset if I don't get the grab :( You might see me cry o_O
That is my only interest in autos ;) though still another knife I don't need :) it would be soooooo cool.
Join the club right

Do you all like yellow emojis? I hope so. o_O:(;):)

On the subject raised by bikerector bikerector - "...there just ends up being tons of inexpensive kershaws and rat 1 and 2's on the list."

I wonder if it might be appropriate on occasion to review the list and request a moratorium on certain styles of knives.
When we reach 2 or 3 knives on the list of a certain style call it quits on that style until we are back down to just 1.
Yes, more logistics involve but keeping the list clean minimizes logistics in the long run. Could be as easy as saying at the bottom of the list: OVERLOAD - please no PIFs of (name the style) until further notice.

Just a thought.

Not a horrible idea but it would limit what people who want to claim something could offer up, so kind of a similar problem. Many people on BF have probably gone a similar route, tried out some inexpensive stuff from gerber, kershaw, OKC, or buck and then upgrade to nicer stuff from those brands or went into other ones. I suppose spyderco's tenacious-series and Byrd knives fall in there as well. I did a kershaw and then a byrd for 3-5 years before jumping in on a mini-grip and getting lost in the multi-year search for "the EDC." My point is that many people have had or already have some of the inexpensive knives which is why there are both so many offered and less interest overall. This is one reason I like to give them away without a PIF required, or give to things like boyscouts, friend's kids, or as a prize from something like hunter safety shoot day.

Also, managing the list can be challenging as it is and not sure if what you're suggesting adds enough value to make the added time Jupiter would need to devote to the list to help. At least from my perspective. A lot of the thread is design as being autonomous and member driven with the list just facilitating PIF's, not necessarily running or directing the show.

It also gets awkward when someone is like here I'll take this PM2 off of the PIF list and in exchange here's 5 Steel Warriors and a lightly used stick of chewing gum. I'm all for gear but if it doesn't get taken up over time, its nice to see the person step up and swap out the PIF as I've tried to mix up the stuff that I put up. I've done it a few times just because I didn't want to take advantage of anyone's kindness...that said...everybody ain't like that. There's definite instances of the PIF being an opportunity to do a trade up and in some cases that happens and you don't hear from that forum member again. As the system works now, it ain't so bad, especially for something that formed so organically as the PIF thread has.

I'd love to throw in more stuff but I'm down to about a dozen not very expensive knives at this point all of which I really dig.

You guys all bring up valid points. The one for one prevents the multiples for one or 2 for 1. I think having the guideline of over a certain value it should be one for one unless it sits for a week or so. Then maybe a 2 for one or something like that.
Also the multiples like rat 1 and this do come up but mostly move around. It is also depending on new members coming in aswell. The list should have that good variety but with certain guidelines being held up.
