PIF-ERS just talking shop

I am trying to figure out this whole PIF deal. They are talking steering columns there, and knives in the shop talk . I also see guys I have known a long time getting upset here. Still trying to decide if I want to jump in.
Point in time in my life, I have more things than money, I could see this being fun, or not.
I am a generous person, as are many here, but reading through the thread I have seen some strange things happen .
Anyway, looks like fun mostly, just weighing the fun vs irritation coefficient.
Carry on Gents, I need more coffee.

I think the drama is over now and everyone has moved on. Yeah maybe we should post up in that thread too move the chit chat here

I agree. If it's not directly related to a PIF or PIF-related, "hey guys, got some use out the knife I received from knifenut#1 and I'm still so happy," kind of stuff. The off-topic talk was exactly why this side thread was created. The community involved in the PIF that has formed have a place for miscellaneous banter.

Best we can do is a three cylinder 1.0 Geo Metro drop top. No PiF.

One of our buddies had that same car in high school...those little 3-bangers appear to be indestructible

Simplicity and reliability go hand in hand in many things ;)
I actually drove the crap out of one delivering auto parts for a while too...we (the parts drivers) really wanted a new car but the Metro wouldn't die! Downshift into 1st coming off the freeway, drive around town all day in 1st...just not enough mass in the engine to tear itself apart.

I too noticed that the PIF thread is going all over the place. Seems as though its difficult for some people to keep it to PIF related posts. I'm having fun, and getting to try new knives out in exchange for letting others try out knives that I have. Overall I love the idea of PIF.

I'm trying to be less chatty in the PIF thread....if you want to comment on a post there, click reply then copy the text and paste it in the box over here in the chat thread:thumbsup: The quoted poster still gets alerted to the reply and directed here;)

I had a ford tempo like that. Paid $100 for it in college. Eventually had to get rid of it as the frame was rusting away. If I hit the accelerator too fast the seat would rock back into the back seat, rear floor was completely rusted out, and had to weld up the sub-frame from a piece of semi-truck bumper to give the rear stabilizer arms something to attach to. Drove it to the garage with a ratchet strap holding the wheel in position. Also had the rear shocks come through the trunk backing out of the driveway once. Engine still purred like a kitten when I sent it to the junk yard for about $150. Think I drove it for 1 or two years my junior and senior year before "upgrading" to a beatup pink dodge neon. Nothing more manly for a college-sized D-lineman than driving a barbie pink neon to practice every day.

UNCLE :( Have to give up on my new Kizer Splinter from REK Knives REK Knives .

I simply can't get past 3 or 4 flips without having it lock up. Have tried taking it apart but the 2 pivots screws turn together and even my good WIHA torx (one on each side of the pivot) can set it free. Don't want to risk damaging so I cry UNCLE.

Too bad - no matter what Nick Shabazz says about it I like it. I am not placing my finger on the lock bar when I try to flip it so that is not the problem. Something inside is misaligned and locking it. When that happens the blade needs to be pulled out and even then it sticks.

Is there such a thing as KIZER customer support or spa service? Otherwise I will rePIF (NO PIF required, in spite of my general aversion to NO PIF - this seems like the perfect reason to use in this case.) this as a repair project for someone with more courage or determination than I.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Have you tried bending the lock so there is less inward pressure or filing off the surface a bit? Pencil on the tang and lock face? Same with a sharpie?

Is it lock stick or sticking when you try to open? The above are things I've done for lock stick of frame locks and liner locks. If it's on the open, I've seen the detent become rusted into it's socket and using 3-in-1 and working it over helped a ton. I had this issue on a ZT 0450.

Trying to open is the problem. The knife is new and pristine - no dirt and definitely no rust.
Thanks for the ideas though.

I’ve had three Metros in my life, ran one into the ground, another the frame just randomly broke while taking a corner, and the last was totaled in a hit an run while parked on the street.
Great cars, super fun, and as good as a 4x4 in the mountains of Colorado. You get stuck just bounce the car by yourself to where it needs to be and off you go!

Why don't you send it back I'll break it loose and take a look :)

Thanks Josh. You are certainly more qualified for this project than I am. STILL I feel bad about needing to get you involved. As I suggested earlier, I get it that you flipped this one and it seemed perfect when you sent it out. That it only sticks every 3rd or 4th time is very queer. If you don't mind a project I'll send it to you.

Thanks very much.

Sure, send it my way!

Does it happen like that whether you put tension on the lock bar or not when opening?

YES! I have very deliberately kept my hand off the lock bar when trying this and on or off I get the blade stick.
