Pistol/dagger project

bruce...i know you are going to have this engraved....r u gonna do anything else to the ivory except the radius that you carved....like scrimshaw or anything else.....do you do any engraving yourself or do you have engravers that you work with.....ryan

Ryan,
I work with Jere Davidson mostly. I talked with him yesterday about the engraving. He was relieved to not put gold wire inlays in this one. The raised radius is all the carving Im going to do on the scales. They will get engraved around all the edges to match the engraving on the front bolsters. I'm pretty much leaving the designs to Jere. All I told him was it was "French". I can hardly wait to see what he does.

I plan to take this to Josh's hammer-in at the end of this month and send it off to him after. He will have it all of July. Thanks for asking

Bruce
will you be leaving the pictures up for this thread ? :)

Hey Dan,
I've been using PhotoBucket on this thread and it seems endless unlike last time where I ran out of Forums space. What did you want to do?
I'm actually almost finished but I want to proof the barrel and show a shot or two at the hammer-in and also the "After engraving" in August. Also need a walnut case made and could snap a pic of that.

Bruce - your thread has made me have an interest in muzzle loading pistols and their engineering. It seems that most have a 'half cocked' safety position where the weapon will not fire. Yours does not seem to have that. Is this because it is basically an 'art' piece that can be fired, but, probably never will be fired by anyone but you??

Amazing work - thanks for the education.

I figured if you were going to leave the pictures up I'd add the link to the "good info link" as a tutorial if not I'd do maybe something else with it if OK with you so it won't die and fall off to no where.. :)

yes to the finished pictures :)

This one doesnt have the safety position or "half cocked" on the hammer. Its not because I will be the only one to shoot it but its because there isnt much room to make one. The hammer needs another notch for the trigger sear to fall into but this notch needs to be deep and shaped like an oval so it actually traps the tip of the trigger. With this one I decided to leave the cap off until ready to shoot.
As for being an "art" piece I fully expect it to shoot and shoot flawlessly. It may not be accurate but it had better operate as good as it looks. Its just a simple design and is what they used back in the day of Old. Now we have such complicated actions I just cant invent anything better so I stick with the old ways. Its enough challenge for me.

Bruce - I apoligize if my reference to this as an 'art piece' offended. It was intended as a complement. My knives will cut, hold an edge and not break if not abused, but, would never be considered 'art'. My hat's off to you, sir.

Jacque, I took it as a compliment, Thankyou for that. I enjoy art pieces but I feel if they dont function they are just wall hangers.
One of my upcoming projects is for a pistol and a matching bowie. I hope the pistol functions magnificently. I have never made a pistol without a blade before. Should be very fun.

I just found this Bruce. Very cool. Do we get to see you shoot it in a couple weeks?

Josh,
Art and I are pulling in Thursday night so we should have time Friday for anyone interested to shoot it. After the hammer in it goes in for engraving.
See ya in a couple weeks!

Great Thread, Bruce, another one of your museum quality knife-pistols
