I like pocket sized fixed blades

Had an interesting request from a long time customer recently. He wanted me to build him a roughout sheath of my Horizontal variety with out a belt loop on the back. In essence a pocket sheath. He was very specific on the measurements of this sheath as he was wanting it to fit in the knife pocket on a new brand of jeans he was wearing. Got er done:

He'd bought this Gordo off of the website and asked for the additional sheath too:

So it came with this Horizontal sheath:

Then I built this additional roughout sheath without a belt loop on the back for his pocket:

He did request that the back be 1/4" longer than the front:

Can someone explain to me the purpose of a pocket sheath clip?

I understand it's for keeping everything secure in pocket, but the ones I have tested are a pain to unsheath/sheath while clipped. The ulti style clips work the best for this purpose, but they literally shred my pants.

I see a lot of the lighter weight clips and I wonder how they are staying put when unsheathing the knife.

Both about a 3” blade. For me, that is the optimal length for pocket carry.

Agreed. 3" is just about perfect for a pocket fixed blade - not too small, not too big. Much larger, and I'd rather have it on my belt.

And it needs to have a taco-style sheath, for a minimal footprint in the pocket. Pancake sheaths take up too much pocket space unnecessarily.

This one is a 3" blade, 6-5/8" overall, and just about as perfect of a pocket fixie, in terms of dimensions and blade shape/thickness, as I can imagine.

The discrete carry concepts clips are the best pocket clip I've used. They accommodate thicker pockets than an ulti-clip, hold on to the pocket basically just as well as the ulti-clip and they cost less as well.

In the pictures I posted above you can see the different clips I've used, from some mystery brass plated example, a couple of titanium clips from LynchNW and the pocket fighter has a DCC clip. Based on my own use, I'm going to use the DCC clips as much as possible moving forward.

I am very picky in what I like for a pocket sheath. If you look at the pics navman posted, his sheath uses a Discreet Carry Concepts (https://discreetcarryconcepts.com/) clip on his sheath. On that clip, you can see a tooth that bends inward. The tooth makes it grip better. That is what makes it work better. The pic Hammer67 posted shows a clip without that tooth. It is fine on my folders, because I want to pull the whole folder out with the clip. On a fixed blade I want the knife to leave the sheath behind when I draw. Clip is only one part. The sheath retention is also important. If there is too much then you are pulling the sheath out with the knife no matter what.

The pocket clip also puts the knife at a height and location that you can access consistently and easily vs a slip sheath. I know its easy for me to look the knife into a kydex sheath, like holstering a gun. I haven’t used a leather sheath but if it is sufficiently stiff and does not collapse, it should work, too.

Those types of clips are not all created equal, either. I've seen some clips like that that are soft and flimsy and basically worthless. That one in the pic I posted above has good tension, and I don't have a problem at all with drawing the knife and having the sheath stay in place.

Part of the reason one needs more clip retention with a clip on a kydex sheath is that kydex has positive 'click-in' tension which needs to be overcome to draw the sheath to begin with. A well-fit leather sheath doesn't need as strong of a clip, because it isn't overcoming the same amount of retention. Pluses and minuses.
