Photos Pocket Fixed Blades

I am very picky in what I like for a pocket sheath. If you look at the pics navman posted, his sheath uses a Discreet Carry Concepts (https://discreetcarryconcepts.com/) clip on his sheath. On that clip, you can see a tooth that bends inward. The tooth makes it grip better. That is what makes it work better. The pic Hammer67 posted shows a clip without that tooth. It is fine on my folders, because I want to pull the whole folder out with the clip. On a fixed blade I want the knife to leave the sheath behind when I draw. Clip is only one part. The sheath retention is also important. If there is too much then you are pulling the sheath out with the knife no matter what.

The pocket clip also puts the knife at a height and location that you can access consistently and easily vs a slip sheath. I know its easy for me to look the knife into a kydex sheath, like holstering a gun. I haven’t used a leather sheath but if it is sufficiently stiff and does not collapse, it should work, too.
Not a DCC clip in that image, but similar in general appearance. (I have a ton of DCC clips on holsters and sheaths...but some of the similar clips work pretty well.)

I have put DCCs on my pocket sheaths from various makers here. I think they work better than Mummert which I use for other sheaths. Ulti-Clip is generally my last choice.

Those types of clips are not all created equal, either. I've seen some clips like that that are soft and flimsy and basically worthless. That one in the pic I posted above has good tension, and I don't have a problem at all with drawing the knife and having the sheath stay in place.

Part of the reason one needs more clip retention with a clip on a kydex sheath is that kydex has positive 'click-in' tension which needs to be overcome to draw the sheath to begin with. A well-fit leather sheath doesn't need as strong of a clip, because it isn't overcoming the same amount of retention. Pluses and minuses.
Agreed.

Plus, a lot of times, you can withdraw the knife with your thumb on the top of the clip for leverage (while holding the sheath in place) and use the other fingers to break the knife free to begin withdrawal while it is retained in pocket. (At least that's been my experience. I have both kydex and leather pocket sheaths.) With the kydex tacos, I usually push off the sheath itself with the thumb and that does the trick.

Yeah, I like kydex pocket sheaths that have a little thumb ledge to push off of.

But I have mixed feelings on DCC clips. As others have noted, they tear up your pants.

The Mummert clip is my favorite - good attachment, but nowhere near as rough on clothing as the DCC.

I like Mummerts, but usually more for IWB and occasionally in the pocket. Hold is not quite the same unless I'm using a belt. Sometimes one is better than the other on a particular sheath or application.

(I actually typed Millit earlier when I meant Mummert. Got my M's crossed...but have corrected it.)

Can confirm not DCC bit similar with excellent retention on the pocket. I chose those because the first pocket sheath i made for a guy, he wanted a clip that "would hold on like roofing tar."

I like Mummert for anything that will get carried on the belt but I find it doesn't retain well and is too bulky in the pocket. I agree the DCC are the best pocket options, but I think many erstwhile pocket sheath makers mount the clips too low and you end up with a knife that sticks halfway out of the pocket.
