Recommendation? Pocket slip, or let it scuff?

As long as the edge is protected, I'm good to go.

Also, I would try to avoid any marks or gouges to the handle that I could feel when using the knife—superficial scratches, etc., not a concern. One of my EDCs is going on 35 years now!

Mine are carried bare with the keys. It's eventually going to get blade scratches and scale scratches.

The first scratch... well, it's a disaster and the world is about to end.
The second scratch is incredibly annoying!
After a while, all the scratches blend together and all is well again.

I use a slip for mine, more to keep them sitting upright in my pocket than to protect them. I am also a fan of the knives ship free pocket sheaths for small fixed blades. Their northwoods slipjoint slip with space pen is also very nice.

I'm a little late to the thread but here's my take, some knives tumble themselves smooth in my pocket over time, hence the term poet worn. :) Others have a slip for them either because they came with one, my pearl handled William Henry for example and others like my Ray Cover Slipjout have one because It's F&F are superb and blemish free so I keep them in a sheath to prolong their finish as long as possible while I carry it. The last category are slip sheath s made for me by a friend that I just happened to have a knife that fits it, in the case of this sheath these two knives were made for it and it keeps them standing up in my pocket for easy access.

Have some slips, soft nappa ones by French makers, they are tight and take up a lot less room than the bulky Sharpshooter style ones. But, on the whole I can't be bothered with knife purses...;)

However, I hate carrying a knife with keys, coins, torch and all that, makes it hard to access things without lugging everything out, so a knife on the right and all the other on the left. What I won't do any more is watch pocket carry, most are too shallow and a couple of weeks back my beloved Böker Pen went MIA due to this. Still in mourning but lesson learned.

Damn! Have you checked sofa/under car seats? Only time I've missed mine was when I was laying horizontal.

Traditional in a leather slip in my left front pocket, next to my wallet. I just hate feeling a knife loose in my pocket.

To the OP they are your knives treat them how you want. You can take care of them or not.
You can use a knife with out abusing a knife.
The first 503 was carried with keys and change but not abused. It was a part time knife when I didn't want to carry the larger stockman.

This second 503 was gifted to me, it wasn't used a lot just tossed around and abused a bit.

The last knife is my Railspliter, it's done more cutting than the other two combined. I use it for anything i need to cut. Last night I cut some small branches, to clear the view for a trail cam. I carry it in a dedicated pocket and I'm careful where and how it sit it down. Usually on it's back springs. Users don't have to look abused.

Coming from newer knives with pocket clips making for easy access and one handed opening back to carrying a traditional everyday, its already an added couple steps to fish the knife out of my pocket and then open with both hands. I tossed around putting mine in a slip or sheath but adding another step to the process ruled that out quick for me. I love patina and wear tho so I dont mind the minimal damage that comes from allowing it to roam my pockets free.

A pocket slip is hardly ever used. I just put it in the pocket and am ready to go... it is a pocket (!!) knife and no pocketslip or sheath knife of any kind. ;)

I don't really do slips any more, it takes too much time to get your knife out and put it back. As long as the knife isn't rubbing anything hard like change or a flashlight I don't care.

How I carry a traditional depends on the size and value/cost. Generally knives that I seldom carry go in a slip. My TA Davison always rides in a slip. My GEC #42's generally go in a slip to facilitate easier carry. Small knives generally get tossed in my pocket mixed with whatever else might be in there.... coins, keys, small multi-tool, etc. My SAKs always just get tossed in my pocket and they scratch up.

For me, it depends on the knife. I carry the Colonial 2205 Military Scout nearly every day in the pocket with the keys and I think it looks better with some light scratches, befitting a useful tool like a hammer or a wrench. It's kinda like having the same amount of wrinkles as a good buddy you have shared a lot of experiences with, or dents in a pick up. But when I carry something that I paid extra for it to be pretty, I tend to baby it in a slip. I have often laughed at myself for this....

As I read through all of these, I get a good sense of how I fall into it myself. I'm still just tossing the knife in my back pocket, and the presence of scratches on the wood covers seems a lot less prominent now. Almost as if my mind has stopped looking for them.

Feels I'm just a bare in pocket guy with this, and it's getting easier to put the nicer knives right in the pocket without concern..

Personal growth, it seems. :)

What bothers me the most about carrying in a pocket with change or keys is that something inevitably gets lodged in the blade wells. I hate that!

That happened to me a couple times when I was a kid and I've had knife-only pockets ever since.

WHile it's not my knife it looks to be the special edition "warthog" tinker. I'd love those to put on my current SAK as well but they all seem to come attached to a rather expensive limited edition knife.

To stay on topic, I mostly keep my traditional knives in a separate pocket to keep them a little nicer and to keep keys and coins from jamming into the blade well. I do keep an Opinel No 8 in with my coins and a telescoping space pen and while the finish is wearing off the wood it's no worse for wear.
My Seahorse currently rides in a back pocker and I dont care that it falls over to horizontal there.ex

I like a slip, I have a few different sized really basic glove leather slips. It keeps the knives better in my pocket and keeps them from getting scuffed, my personal preference, but it works for me!
