Poll Ax

well, I have blisters on both my thumbs from whittling that huge pick-axe handle head down to size. did tons and tons of carving, and crap loads of sanding after that. I finally hammered it on this afternoon. I think tomorrow I might drill the holes for the screws. I am temped to simply buy some shorter heavy wood screws to put in so if I break them off while throwing I will still have the factory sets for mounting to the actual pole it came with

Nice thread! I picked up one of those, too (and, yes...I too am bummed that I missed the halberd!).

the one thing about this awesome weapon is that i cant help but feel that a good addition to the business end would be a 4" spike pionted out from the tip of the pole sticking out of the end of the sttel axe head. this would be good if you had the chance to do a quick spear type thrust.

Borrowed time, I was thinking the same thing...I've been mulling over drilling and mounting an old SKS spike bayonet in the tip, but I'm a bit worried about thickness. What do you think of that idea? It would be a wide hole compared to the diameter of the pole; but the hole would certainly be reinforced by the head wrapped around it, don't you think?

Another alternative is a bare blade with a couple of holes to match the Pole Ax head rivets...maybe one of the Atlanta Cutlery bare blades? With the pole inserted into the head socket, it would be a fairly strong joint, right?

Or does it sound like I would be compromising the pole at the action end?

I'm waiting for my CS pole axe to arrive...and after looking thru the myarmoury stuff a nice spike off the top would look pretty good. What about a piece of steel strap bent into a "U" to take the place of the langets with some sort of spike mounted on on the top of the "U"?

That's a nice idea, Patrick...it would certainly be a stronger head. Would you pass the strap outside the head's eye hole or inside? I'm thinking if you shaved off some of the wood, you could still fit the head on; and it would be a pretty strong grip on the strap, which would be a good anchor for the spike.

How would you attach the spike...weld? Or, would you want the spike to be an integral part of the strap?

I'm thinking of drilling a 6 or 8 inch hole down the center of the axe handle, inserting a spike (not sure what I'm going to use) putting the axe head on the shaft. Then putting the strap over that and forming it to he shaft over the axe head and drilling three or more holes thru the spike and shaft handle (most likly 3/16th taped holes) I'll try to take a picture of a sketch since my description leaves something to be desired.

In a description on the myarmour site it gave this process as an historical mounting method....just got to give it a try.

I have the perfect thing to use for a spike. The Swiss bayonets are cheap ,plentiful and not collectible as well as they disassemble easily. I have one and it is to obtuse to be much use as a blade unless you do some radical reprofiling but it would make the perfect spike. It is even nice and shiny .

Second down under the kukuri. It is made by the swiss army knife companies mine has a W for Wenger others have a V.

Thanks, Unsub!

What does the tang look like? How long, and does it have any holes for the rivets to go through?

I am thinking about using rose head nails to secure the head to the handle. I have it pounded on. I have found copper and brass versions. I would also consider black iron versions if I could find them. I suppose I could just use traditional screws.

What about some nice pan head allen screws? They're different than the normal philips head (Home cheapo sells them).

Can't wait for my axe to show up.........its pumpkin season up here.

I just drilled and used the socket style bolts that came with it. Hopefully when I throw it they won't break.

Going over to the Walters Art Museum at lunch to take some pics of some greek and roman jewerly and their one pole axe, assuming that people are still alowd to take pictures.

Got half my pole axe last night, the axe head went some where else and should be delivered today.

Got some pics of a medeival pole axe. The axe head seems to be about 6 inches, the spike about 12 inches, the whole thing about 6 1/2 feet long.

Thanks for the pics. Any chance of a larger one of the overall display?

Hopefully this will be a larger image.

Its pretty dark in the museum, so the image quality is a bit grainy. I can try again if you need some clearer images.

These were my fist test with this axe (sorry I didn't fix the pic orientation). One of the weird things was how flexable the handle was it was hard to get a really solid wack....I've got a Gransfors Bruks danish axe that has a very solid hickory handle, very differnt feel when it hits something). I think I'm going to try and change it out for some Hickory, maybe a wheel barrow handle first, since they are round a square, easier to cut down on a table saw.

Thanks for the bigger picture. I can see now that the object in the lower left is a crossbow and not a sword on a stand.:D

That shield is freaking huge!

The sheild looks heavy as hell to. Not something I want to try and run around with. I'm not sure why the pole axe is in there with the cross bow and sheild, guess it looked nice for a limited display space.
