Poll Ax

Had pole-axes commonly been made with a round socket? Don't know. But it does give a sort of hammer-blow following the chop.

I'd ordered one more after I saw hatchetjack's masterwork to the frontier hawks. A pole-axe turned spike-tomahawk, anyone? I'd carry it.

From the few I've seen in museums they seem to have rectangular sockets. Not sure if its typical but those are the ones I've seen.

OK.....It was just delivered.

Very impressive for the price

This weekend Mod time.....:D:D

Just unpacked mine, it's a beast. I plan to make it into a raybateson version, can't wait to get to it.

I've got one of these too, and it's probably the best deal I've ever gotten for something sharp and pointy.

Honestly, I'm tempted to buy another one after seeing Ray's mods.

The spike idea really appealed to me.

Well I was going to cut the poll off but I decided not to, instead I shortened the handle to 4'. Still needs to be roughed up and stained but works great. Tips the scale at just under 5lbs.

It makes short work of 2x4s

How much does it weigh?

I don't have a machine scale so I'd need to say 1.5 - 2.0 Lbs., for the head only. You can't go wrong. You can actually twirl it between your fingers. No, but that's really not too far out an embellishment.

Since these photos I've given it the final makeover and named it the gramrock. :) My little pet.

I ordered a pole-axe from CS the other day. I can't wait to see it.

Anybody know of any good instructions on how to fight with this thing?

You don't need to know how to fight with it...
Just SCREAM as you brandish it... they will run away!!

They sent their DVD with mine and Lynne does a very good description of how HE would use it.

As bragging rights I have a story to tell. I wanted to get one for me and 3 more as Xmas presents. So one day I get a box from CS. Great, sign for it, open it up and realize it is only the handles. Wait 2 weeks- no head. Call CS and ask for replacement heads as they cannot track where it was. The gentleman tells me that they cannot send out just heads so I get 4 more axes. 2 days later I get my original heads, a week later the new shafts and the day after that I get the new heads. It works out that each one was about $20 including shipping and duties. YAY ME!!!
And I got to my workshop for the first time in 5 months last week- mods are calling me once I get everything clean and orderly now.

Man, I hope yall got a better pick of handle than I did. Mine wasnt fit for firewood.

It had decent grain for about 2ft, then it all went to hell. Also, by then end of the handle, it had bowed damn near 3in. COmpletely useless.
CS has some great bargins on heads, but I have yet to get a decent, workable piece of wood from them yet.

I got mine! YIKES! This thing is awesome!!! I can get me some good exercise doing katas with this behemoth.

I had no trouble assembling it, even without instructions. I just marked the holes on the pole, and used my drill press. I had to sand the top of the pole slightly for the head to fit on. I just sanded it enough so I could tap the head down with a rubber mallet. Then it was just a matter of screwing the langinettes to the shaft. I got some slightly londer wood screws from Ace Hardware, just to make them a bit more secure. This thing is SOLID! I believe I could slice through an engine block if I needed to.

I had to work on the blade some to get it really sharp, but now it has a semi-razor edge and it seems like it will hold it well. It can slice paper without tearing it, now.

Semper Fi!

here is a pic of mine I forgot to come back to this post and post it. I think another one for a mod job would be a good idea. I will have to check and see if they are still for sale on close out.

It's got a cherry stain on it. I haven't oiled it yet because it looks better every time I put another coat of stain on it. I'm thinking about shortening it up a little more as well.
