Poll Ax

I have the perfect thing to use for a spike. The Swiss bayonets are cheap ,plentiful and not collectible as well as they disassemble easily. I have one and it is to obtuse to be much use as a blade unless you do some radical reprofiling but it would make the perfect spike. It is even nice and shiny .

Second down under the kukuri. It is made by the swiss army knife companies mine has a W for Wenger others have a V.

How about screwing an SKS bayonet in the top?

I was thinking about that, fudo...the only thing that I'm wondering is, would you weaken the wood with a hole like that? Or would it be strong enough with the collar of the ax head around it?

Any body have a chance to attach a spike yet? I've ground to a halt untill I've got some more free time.

The SKS spike bayo would work. You would need to set it just a touch past the start of the fullers; and measuring carefully would be important; but it would work. Othe than drilling it straight and lining up the holes, there would be no problem.

Fill the hole with epoxy or similar when assembling, and it would not weaken the shaft at all.

Well, the friday after Halloween I took my pumpkins to scouts and we had fun bashing it with this axe. The original ash handle does have some flex partially because it is so long. I mounted my axe head on a hickory pick handle. It sure took some work to whittle it down by hand to get it to fit. The hickory seems quite stiff. One thing, with the axe head is when you bury it into a log round it is tough to get it back out.

Sorry I can't post any picks, some how the program to synk my camera to my computer got deleted from my computer and we can't find the CD any where.

Eh... you really can make a silk purse from a sow's ear.

That is the cs pole axe. What's left of it anyway.

Patrick, the shaft is 33" and stained american walnut.

I bought it wanting a beater, the modding was only to satisfy a minimum standard of appearances, it's dull work, but it was simpler than my idea of building a tetsubo out of a hickory table-leg.

Hacksaw. Then go to the rotary grinder, and every few seconds a dip into a cold water bucket. I estimate that I removed 2lb. of material. The hammer alone seemed to weigh about 1.5.

And shaping it into a spike? Didn't even occur to me. :grumpy:

I like it the way it is, I'm not a fan of spikes. Dropping ~2 lbs. sounds perfect. I resisted quite well till your pics, but last night I finally ordered one (I need a new project anyway). Thanks for the info.

OK........you guys suck.

I was resisting till I saw raybateson's mod nice Job .

It's still listed at special projects so I ordered one. :)

These things are a ton of fun! Too bad pumpkin season is over, pumkins just flew apart when you hit them with the pole axe.
