Guy, do you mind if I ask about the differences you have noticed between the 3v and Elmax knives you have made? I understand that 3v is very hard and tough, stain resistance is better than many other carbon steels, it holds and edge well but has a tendency to chip. (I had a custom scandi Bushcrafter in 3v and loved it) Elmax seems to be tough as well, with stain resistance being an obvious advantage over 3v. My experience with stainless steels is that often they are so hard that sharpening can be a chore.

Blade design, edge geometry etc all plays a role as well when it comes to each different steel. The edc 4 appears to be outstanding in both steels, but what are your observations?

(Can you tell I'm torn between the two? I keep leaning toward 3v, but only because I like carbon steels and have had experience with it)

Thanks for your trouble.

I'm just going with the Elmax because I haven't tried it yet, 3V is awesome but I own a bunch in that already.

First, the Elmax holds a crazy edge and an Elmax EDC-4 quickly found its way into my carry bag for that reason. I'm finding that if you don't let it get dull, it is very easy to strop or buff it back to hair shaving with very little effort. It is not nearly as tough as the 3V BUT it is one of the toughest stainless steels going and is plenty robust for any cutting chores you might encounter.

Who keeps saying that CPM-3V is chippy? Unless you got a bad HT batch or something, nothing could be farther from the truth, unless somewhere along the way someone got mixed up and confused CPM-S30V with CPM-3V. I do know S30V had some micro chipping issues.

Don't make the mistake of turning an exception (like bad heat treat or bad edge geometry) into the rule. At least in my knives, I have never seen chipping issues. The problem with 3V is you REALLY need to know what you are doing with heat treat. It is unforgiving and will punish you if the heat treat is off, even a little.

Part of my destruction testing I did while back in prototyping was hammering a knife edge into a 1/2" hardened grade 8 bolt. Of course, the bolt being case hardened to a higher Rc than the knife, deformed the knife edge but it still didn't chip.

Heck, even in this attached video, where I saw out a truck windshield, the edge didn't chip. It deformed plenty because that safety glass is retarded hard but no chips. For anyone wondering, in the end of that video, I put a 4 foot length of pipe over the end of the knife to gain enough leverage to finally break it. Even then it bent a good 60 degrees or so before failure.

I have yet to break even one of my knives or have it fail in any way, in actual field use.

+1 on the 3V not being chippy, I have a Koster in 3V that I've used pretty hard including batoning through hardwood and accidently having it go through the wood and hard on to the cement below it with no edge damage/chips. 3V is a very tough steel.

Damn, you just cost me $120...

How do I order?

I just got materials availability confirmed for the CPM-3V. Just down to sourcing some sheets of Elmax. I don't want to pay the "boutique" prices for this sheet stock, from the steel "retailers", so I'm looking around at some other options. Top dollar is fine for a short sheet but I'm not paying that for multiple full sheets.

I'll most likely have the store front open by sometime next week, where people will be able to pick out their options and get things finalized. I'll leave the store front open for a full week, similar to how the GSO-10 preorder promotion went down.

Speaking of, I need to get a bulk email prepared, to send out a progress report to those involved in the GSO-10 promotion. I like to keep everyone informed along the way, as much as possible.

Hey, thanks for the response.

Now you're talking Guy! Patiently waiting.

Sweet! This thing is gonna happen!! If the store will be up next week for the 4s, can we then order and pay for them up front? And if we want a sheath, we will have to contact Kiah, right?

Thanks bro. I really excited about these.

Yes, it will be a prepaid preorder, just like the GSO-10 promotion. I will have the store front open as soon as I have the GSO-4.1 revision all buttoned up and all the project details nailed down. You'll be able to order your sheaths and everything up front, in the SURVIVE! store and have them delivered with your new knives.

That part works out really well because we have all of your colors and material quantities up front, from when you confirm your preorder(s). I just tell Kiah how many of what colors to make. If you have something special in mind for a sheath, feel free to line that up directly with him though. I only mark up the costs of his sheaths enough to cover shipping to and from, so you won't hurt my feelings either way.

Then just sit back and watch the project unfold, through my short movies and updates. Even though I don't really make any profit from this type of thing, I am really happy to be doing this for everyone, one last time. Being so close to Christmas and all. Everyone needs a little good will. Now more than ever.

This really is putting a very high end knife at a price point that a normal working man like myself can afford. I for one really appricate it and look foward to getting your product in hand.

its really a 2 for you can get an elmax and a cpm-3v for the price of one good knife...... I am not patiently waiting I am just waiting but pleasantly becasue to those who wait comes a great knife......

Hey Guy i just wanted to put in a vote for a choiless option for your gso line at some point in the future. that would be sweet!

actually i just found the CAD drawings of your gso 6 online. which i believe u said is going to b called the gso 7 now. is it still going to be choiless like your original concept? please say yes.

Hahaha! Yes, I will in fact have a choil-less version of a knife in the same size range as the GSO-5.1 and GSO-7/7(GSO-6.1). It will be right in the 5.5" blade length range. I know the choil vs. no choil camps are HIGHLY polarized.

Count me in on this one too. It will go well with my GSO10. I will keep an eye out at the store.

I voted for I would buy one. But now I think I will buy two. 1 elmax and 1 3v. Plus I will probably get one of your 3v 5.1.
