Poor man's Sebenza?

The Kershaw Tyrade, is one heck of a knife. For the price, I would get the Kershaw.

Considering all that goes into it and the quality of the fit and finish, the Tyrade is an amazing bargain at $180 shipped. When they first came out for ~$150 I should have bought three or four.

You could also wait for the Spyderco RIL Sage, it will be a Ti Reeve-Integral-Lock just like the Sebenza. Same materials too, titanium and S30V.

If you can find (& afford it) a good deal on a Seb, I'd say get it. If not, or you're looking for something that's say...$150 or less, than I agree with all the previous suggestions.

Just an opinion...the Bradley Alias I & II are very nice & probably the closest, lookswise, to the Seb. While I have a small & lg. Seb, if I didn't, I actually like the Buck/Mayo TNT better than the Bradley Alias II. The BM Skirmish (635 & 630) are very nice & the Kershaw Ti JYD SG2's are great, though large. For a little more $ (& a bigger knife), the BM 760 M4 is nice & the blade steel is great.

If $ is definitely an issue & you want something under $100, I'd say go for a CRKT S2. I've had a few (small, med, & lg.). I didn't think the steel was that bad, but because it was a CRKT, I wasn't expecting much, either. However, for the $, they're a lot of knife.

Even though it's a compression lock, you can "kind of" say a Spyderco ATR is a frame-lock. While they seem to be getting more expensive, I believe you can still find them for under $100. I even modded mine (Blue/black G-10 scale, bead-blasted lock-side scale, & low-rider clip).

Good luck with whatever you get.

Take a good look at the Buck/Mayo TNT or, if you want something slightly smaller, the Waimea. Both are titanium frame locks with BOS heat treated S30V blades. I EDC a Waimea and it's a great knife. Both can be found for well under $200.

lol I somehow forgot about the alias...is it legal for me to +1 alias on my own thread?

Your thread, your rules!:D As for a 'poor man's Sebenza,' I suggest trying to find a Sebenza at a really good (read: much reduced) price.;)

Regards,
3G

I would have to say for a cheap "ass" frame lock of very high quality try the Boker M type. I gotta tell ya for the money spent and quality of build and robustness of build the M type is a very very good bargain. It ain't a Sebbie by any stretch but then again it will feed the need for a quality work tool with great ergonomics, a very well put together knife for sure. keepem sharp

I've always been amused how on one hand people can fume in indignation because of the cheap sanrenmu sebbie-lookalike, but on the other hand I never read anyone complaining about the similar looks of the Bradley Alias

I do not know what or where the bias stems from but I do know that the Sanrenmu 710 and all the other Sanrenmu knives I've recently purchased are great. The fit and finish is superb! Those who do not get one or a few in my opinion are missing a good deal and a great knife. The current cost is about $8 for the knife plus shipping from China. The shipping takes about 10 or more days.

I do not sell Sanrenmu. I am not affliated with them or szwholesale that sells them. I do believe for the price all should buy at least one out of curiosity.

After you have one in your hand then curse it or let us all know exactly what is wrong with it; especially me as I am new to knives ; )

That link shows lots of nice looking knives, but no way to order.Any idea who might carry a good selection of these? I would like to order a few. Thanks

I was going to mention the RIL Sage, too. Last I heard, it may be a June release, but that's not from Spyderco... it's just scuttlebutt from the Spydie company forums.

I think that the A.G. Russell Italian Tactical is comparable in quality to any production Ti frame lock. With ATS-34 blade steel they run < $100 and you can even get one with a Damasteel blade for < a new Sebenza.

The VTech 13000 is not bad when you can get one - less than $50. It's not ti, it's not a framelock, but it is a very similar cut and style.

Of course, that's the exact problem with any substitute for a Sebenza - they aren't a Sebenza. And not all S30V & Ti framelock makers even try to emulate the overly precise watchlike construction, or pricing, which is obviously reflected in all the substitute choices.

Like was said, you want an inexpensive Sebenza, buy a used one. Any guy on a cash challenged budget can still pick up what they want if they look hard enough.

I could have gotten a Shelby GT350 for $1,800 in the day, used. Look around.

This is the only source for Sanrenmu knives that I know of:

Search for "GK" on website above.

They are OK to order from as I have twice but shipping is slow from China and takes at least ten days to me (Maryland USA)

You know I just got my Bradley Alias II today and I bought it because I wanted an Alias not because I thought I was getting something like the Sebenza. I don't think that it is like a Sebbie at all. Bottom line is there really is only one Sebenza and it's made by Chris Reeve and the reality is that they aren't all that cheap no matter how you go about getting one. The Alias isn't all that cheap either but at it's price point I would put it's quality up against other blades that cost twice as much. Yep! I like mine that much!

Benchmade 750 is a great knife if you can find one.

Benchmade 635 mini skirmish

A.G.Russell Italian-made tactical is a bargain for such a nice knife

The Sanrenmu RIPOFF doesnt allow for tip up carry...pathetic there arent more laws to protect designs.

I think the Bradley Alias is the closest choice without being a total design theft, and its still darn close.

the TRUE poor man's sebenza is the the bradley alias. the designer, brad of bradley cutery, did it because he was a dealer and the sebenzas were taking waay to much time before he could get them in and he'd be out of stock for quite a while at a time and they aren't cheap. any of the knives mentioned are all great, but if your really looking for the true poor man's sebbie, get an alias.
