Portable Bandsaw Mounting Pictures Needed

Looking at this pictures in this thread. I wonder how hard it would be to modify the blade guides so that it does not twist the blade. This would increase the throat. Anyone see what I mean?

Not simple and maybe not easy either... depends on your tools and your imagination.

You would have to make different guide mounts. The upper guide wheels are on a cast piece that fits a frame groove. The fit disallows rotation and adjusts up/down for more height or shorter distance between upper/lower rollers for different sized stock.

I don't know how much the roller's twisting of the blade has to do with blade tension. Has to be some and if too much, moving the roller guides to change the throat would effectively make the blade longer and maybe the tensioner wouldn't be able to handle the extra slack. That maybe isn't right, but it looks like it might be.

ive been trying to find plans for a non deep throat band saw. i recently purchased a Milwaukee portaband model 6225 on ebay. i didnt know the difference at the time of purchase but i cant seem to find any useful plans for the non deep throat, no table mount pics or even if the 6225 has threaded holes to mount the table on.. does anyone know if i can do this with this portaband. its kind of driving me crazy. i really didnt have the money to purchase it in the first place and to possibly find out it wont work is driving me crazy. so if anyone knows please share the knowledge i clearly lack.

thanks.

I am about to get a DeWalt and the information and pictures are great but no pictures of how the table is mounted:confused::confused::confused: So how is the table mounted?

take the lower blade guide off (the bent thingy above the rollers) and use it as a pattern to fashion a mount that bolts to your table and the saw. you amy be able to just modify the existing guide and mount the table to it.

Andrew Finnie call me my number is in the book.

thanks Bill i will.. i was thinking about calling you on saturday but i didnt want to impose.
what times are best for you?

It is very simple. Look at the picture Nick posted on the first page - I used it as a reference when I was making mine. Get 1/4" thick aluminum plate (mine is about 8"x10"), remove the material guide, make 1/4" holes in the plate that match the holes in the guide, countersink them and use the original screws to mount the plate. Before cutting the aluminum it is a good idea to make a table from the cardboard to see how it fits and what should be cut off.

Thank you. I will give a try to those stores. So far I have already ordered DeWalt blades from Amazon. They should arrive next week. My band saw is already here, I will be building the stand for it tomorrow. I have one more question about blades. The manual requires the blades to be .020" thick only and says to contact the service center to use .025" blades. One of the blades I have ordered from Amazon is .025. Will I be able to use it or will I need to adjust something to do so? Mike, the bandsawdirect store that you recommended sells .023" thick blades. Did you have any problems with those extra .003"?--

Sergiy,

Found this while knocking around the DeWalt site:

D28770 Blade Adjustment

Question
How do you adjust the band saw to accept .025" blades?

Answer
The blades included with this unit are .020” thick. To use .025” thick blades you must reset the guide rollers by loosening each of the 4 bearing screws, install the blade (or use a feeler gauge to reset at .025”), then retighten the 4 bearing screws.

Tool King has the DeWalt D28770K at $199. I think the free shipping promotion still stands.

Did some of you get the tool for $180?

Mike, thank you for the information about adjusting the guide rollers. Sounds pretty easy.

deloid, they had "10% off Dewalt tools" last month and I ordered mine for $180. It looks like they do not have that promotion any more.

I used cutting wax on the DeWalt and the tires won't deal with it. The wax and metal chips stick to the tires causing a hump towards the front edge and the blade climbs up on it and gets out of best-postition for cutting.

It is important to keep the roller gap close to spec. If there is much more gap than necessary, the band isn't twisted as much. A combination of that and a tire wanting to move the blade forward, and it will walk off the wheels.

If a band wants to ride towards the front, switching that tire side for side has worked to change where it runs. Replacement tires are available from a number of places. I haven't figured out where to get them cheap (cost + shipping) yet. When I do, I'll post back.

sorry to bring up an old post but I have a question.

A lot of people have concerns about the throat not being very deep on this saw. How often will this pose a problem to those who want to make fixed blade knives in the 10" and under range? If you have 5" of throat depth, you can do a 10" knife, can you not? Are the folks who are voiceing their concerns to the throat depth cutting stock for daggers and swords?

What is the usable throat depth on the Dewalt saw?

If I could ask, anyone know the difference between the orange chicago tools brands portable from HF and the red ones on fleabay? I'm looking to buy one next week.

Here is a picture of my portaband setup. I'm pretty happy with it thus far.

Very nice, looks like you can do good work on that. I don't see where the problem of throat depth arises, unless you're cutting short swords from bar stock...
