So I've been eyeing a Winkler knife for some time now, and even more so recently. After much debate I decided I could wait since more than likely I would not really NEED such a heavy duty knife and it would go to waist.

Today I'm walking to my truck when a very large pit bull comes out of nowhere (collar on, stupid owners) and decided he wanted to taste my sweet ass. I froze for a bit then remembered my handy Pera military 2 and whipped it out! Almost dropping it from the open fling motion. I have never been under stress when opening it but that was an eye opener. When seconds counted I lost a few!

Standing up to the dog with my left hand ready to take a bite and my right ready to go to work. I made a mental note of a how small my knife was, I wish it was a sword! And also how I only had the one slashing option, wish I had some sort weapon on the grip side, maybe a none leathal option.

Anyway the dog lunged, and I swiped, missing, maybe intentionally since I REALLY didn't want to kill an animal today. He got the point however and took off. I began my journey to the truck, and once again he was ready for round two. It was a rinse and repeat of round one and I made it to my truck safely! Now more than ever determined to get the knife I wanted! You might not need it a good knife 99% of the time, but when that 1% comes around you'l t God you have it!

But after my little encounter, I'm left wondering if a Benchmade infidel would not be a better option. Whip it out, push button and now I have a heavy handle to butt with, and a deadly blade that can be used on both slash motion and very good stabbing motion. More than likely it won' get stuck in the stabbed subject and so on... Or should I get my Winkler, because it' a Winkler and I want it... Lol

Anyway just a fun story to tell.

What a terrible owner, putting their dog at risk like that.

If you know your dog is agressive then control it so that way someone else doesn't get hurt and your dog does not get hurt by that person who has every right to defend themselves.

It makes me so mad to see inexperienced owners getting breeds they cannot handle. This dog sounds like it is only a matter of time before it gets put down, by vet or in self defense.

The Winkler belt knife is an awesome blade. (I want to double edge grind one, that would be amazing)

If you want to carry a folder with some self defense capability (for when belt knife is too big) I recommend checking out a knife with the wave feature.

Concealed carry permit is a better option. You could have legit took him out n fear for self defense or even think if a child was near the event it would have went to the smallest weakest target, Just opinion

That was a fun story about stabbing dogs.

So lemme get the story straight...the ravenous attacking dog got scared of your knife and took off. o_O

And you are thinking next time, a knife that has a butt you can hit the attacking dog with might be more effective, correct?

Glad you and the dog got away unharmed, I'd rather a vicious dog be harmed than a person but since it may not be the dogs fault it acts this way both getting away unharmed is a better result in my eyes.

This story made me and my dog so angry, I absolutely hate people like this giving pitbull owners a bad name, and that they raise dogs that give the breed a bad name.
When I walk buttercup people will often look at her like she's radioactive or something, when they have no clue how harmless and friendly she is ( I have never seen her act aggressively towards a stranger once they get inside and she's done barking, she absolutely loves people )

Anyways I'm glad the results of this
Encounter we're what they were.

I've never seen a pit bull break off an attack on something, so easily once it was mad enough to attack. I only had one that was human aggressive and if she made up her mind to go after someone swinging a knife at her would have had absolutely no effect to stop her. She had been abused by a man as a pup and hated strange men. Are you sure it was a pit? Just if they're mad enough to attack they generally can't be deterred so easily.

Been my experience also. Pulling a knife doesn't stop any dog, let alone a determined pit brought up wrong.

That's a wild story OP. Dogs don't know to fear a knife. Pitbulls, by nature, are mostly fearless, they sure aren't going to get scared in attack mode. Good fiction though, you should write a novel.

I'm sorry for your experience. I know a lot of dog owners who need to wear a collar and get obedience training. Big dogs can be a deadly weapon with minimal accountability to their owners.

Depending on where you live, you could end up in jail for stabbing a dog. If you anticipate more dog encounters, you're better off with a blunt object like a baton or a walking stick. Self defense with a knife could be problematic.

The dog retreated because you struck at it, not because you had a knife in your hand. Their knife cognition skills are "limited". A bigger, tactical blade isn't the answer. That's not to say "don't buy the Winkler", but don't buy it expecting it to be a better weapon to fight off a dog.

Be careful how you word things on a public forum; you've almost expressed intent to seek out a weapon based on dog-slaying capability.

A Firearm should be your primary SD option if safety is your main concern. If it is not legal to do so where you live I recommend moving somewhere where it is. For a back up there are several options of course. Fixed blade concealed is the next best option if legal. Find what works best for you. For me, next is a big modern folder, which in reality, gets 100% more use as an EDC. Something with a non-leathal impact would be like the BM 810 or what I have today the 860 Bedlam. I've gotten that in my fist a time or two when a large pit has stumbled upon my daughter and I walking. Dumb dog owners should be put to sleep.

She was a pit, and a muscular one at that. She hesitated when I took a step back she charged, when I didn't run she slowed a bit and took a test bite but met a swinging blade.

I'e nnever been in a distressed situation like that, I'm thinking I see the benefits of a otf knife Benchmade infidel, and or a fix blade knife Winkler! It only reinforced my decision to get another knife. My Pera is getting long in the tooth. Any thoughts on which one of those two you fellas would grab?

The OP might have mistaken a non commital move by the dog as an attack. Where the dog is still seeing how you will react.

Dogs don't understand the concept of a blade.

I'm guessing any stout, aggressive dog is a Pit Bull to most people. There are probably more attacks attributed to "Pit Bulls" than there are Pit Bulls in the world :).

Dog spray... It's pepper spray that comes out in more of a mist you spray it in the dogs face, it blinds it and goes up its nose hurts like hell. Works great, doesn't harm the dog, doesnt require to to flail about near an angry dog with a knife. Works on raccoons too.

I know of a situation where an American Staffordshire terrier aka pitbull was shot with a 9mm and kept going for another couple minutes. It stopped eventually but not right away. Either way I would get a fixed blade for this type of thing. Something with a design like the benchmade nimravus.

I've never seen or heard of a pit bull hesitating. They are bred for fighting in a pit, hesitation gets them killed. I could see a well mannered friendly pit coming up to you and you having a fear of dogs freaked, if a pitbull attacks though, he'll have piece of your hide ripped out before you can get your knife or even gun drawn.
Do you have a fear of dogs? If that's the case it might've been an angry chihuaha. I reccomend that you volunteer at your local animal shelter and get better acclimated with dogs and maybe even adopt one. Short of a gun, a loyal and sizeable dog is the best self defense around.

I'd get a DA OTF...make sure it's black coated. Attacking pit bulls find those scarier.

I adore pitties. Sweet, sweet dogs. But I have also seen even well cared for ones from the same house go at it with each other. They don't hesitate or take "test bites." They go.

It took about a half hour of hitting on the head with a broom handle and a blast from a fire extinguisher from their (excellent) owner to end the scuffle. One dog too many.
