I had a massive white pit lunge at me from underneath a parked pickup once when I used to deliver mail. I grabbed my dog spray and literally emptied the can on him.
That stopped him where he stood.

99% of pit bulls are no threat to humans. The ones that are have been abused or trained to be human aggressive. They are bred to fight other dogs, not people. They once committed to attack whatever they are attacking are extremely single minded, to the extent they must be held and their jaws pried open with a break stick. Or in the case of attacking a human even killed.

Agreed on all counts.

Dogs dont see a blade as a detterent.

Was it barking at you or was it an all out attack?

So did you stick it or didnt you - first you wrote, the dog thought better of it and then 'it met a blade?'

I dont want to pee on your parade but I used to train dogs for the gubmint' for a living.

The whole 'I presented my one arm for a bite and prepared to knife it with the other hand' is very very rarely something, which are on peoples mind, when a determined German Shepard, Rottie or pit goes at them full bore.

There is a lot of - as Ive written before - flailing of arms and screaming (lots and lots of screaming).

Pepper spray is extremely effective on dogs, just as it is bears because of their highly developed olfactory system. Mace isn't and I've had a German shepherd take an entire can to the face and still only half-heartedly back down.

I was riding a bike once and a idiot guy came out of his house, screaming at me for having pepper spray in my hand for his dog that chased me. I rode on and the dog sensing his owner's aggression towards me, decides to really come after me. I remember seeing this huge dog closing in on my right leg, mouth open running full on. Then I aimed the pepper spray and a beautiful red mist went right into his mouth. The dog was gone so fast, I didn't even see where he went. The next day, I rode by again and the dog sees me gets up off the front porch and takes off out back!

Fellas, I'm not a dog expert, I'm just recounted to my recollection. I have no need to lie lol, I'm an educated man with a professional career. Tell me, what need do I have to lie?

That's a wild story OP. Dogs don't know to fear a knife. Pitbulls, by nature, are mostly fearless, they sure aren't going to get scared in attack mode. Good fiction though, you should write a novel.

Ever heard the term nanny dog ?
Because that was once a common nick name for pit bulls , and for good reason too.

I sort of get the feeling the dig wasn't truly attacking at this time, don't know what exactly was going on but the dog seems to have given up too easily.

Btw just to clear things up for the op, this is the unmistakable face of a pit bull.

Look at my second post on this thread.

I don't think anyone is calling you a liar, just that you perhaps mis-identified the dog and wrongly attributed its response to "recognizing" a knife in your hand.

I have no fear of dogs, it was more of eye opener experience. The point being that you can think you'll not need or use a good knife but a situation or an encounter doesn't really give a warning, you're in it weather you like it or not. As for the dog, it was very non committed as I took a stance, but any little move outside of holding my ground she would have have attacked full force, I have no doubt. Once it decided it didn' want to fight, she just ran off, happy go lucky... Then spotted me again as I was walking away and decided she might actually want to fight... Once again decided against it lol. I'm not asking for your opinions on a good dog killing blade lol, that'
crazy I love dogs, I didn't want to hurt this one! My question is what would be best if I were to once again be in a situation like this human or animal. Stressed and not fully aware of my body motion, it took all the little training I have from YouTube videos to one, grab my knife, two, deploy my knife and 3, knife fighting stance.. As if someone were telling me to do so and not a natural instinct.

I can't own a gun, when I was 18 I got in to some legal trouble.

Oh, no I don't think it cared what I had in my hands more so than I didn't run away. The knife in my hand was more of a "if this dog attacks me, I'll have to kill it, remember dummy, aim for the the throat, she will!"

It was a gray muscular pit bull looking k9. Maybe it was a poodle by blood... But by look it was a pit. Again dog not being the point. Point is a situation one would never expect.

I also agree Jill pitt bulls can be just as gentle and beautiful as any other dogs. Had a really beautiful female walking towards me once in uniform satchel on shoulder. I was petting her and she licked my face and all.
The one I sprayed was a gang bangers dog cut ears, tail, etc..
Probably mis-treated :(

It sounds to me like the dog was infact, not attacking, and rather just running toward you as dogs often do to strangers.

Still the owner should not allow their dog of that breed to engage in that behaviour. It is risky for everyone.

Clearly the dog wasn't a determined blood thirsty killer. The story would have gone way different. Perhaps a little exaggeration is at play here. I've had my pit since she was a pup and soon she'll be 7. She watches my kids with diligence when they are out side.

Having seen my girl go at it with a goat, (goat had horns and head butted zula on the head) I can say hesitation isn't in her vocabulary. By the time I separated them, the goat was mangled and I had to shoot it. We ate it, so no waste.

Probably exactly what you'd experience with my pit bull buttercup.

Btw op, if you think dogs are more of a concern now then I'd go with the spray, for defense against people well the best blade is the one you've got on you that you're most familiar and capable with.
If you carry a blade for defense you should stick with it and become familiar with it, confident in it, and competent with it.

If your not allowed to own, buy, or carry a gun not so sure u should carry a large fixed blade either. I say that for legal purposes. If u want the blade by all means its a free country but if u have a record it wouldn’t sit well legally if u ever used a blade in defense. Would definitely go with spray
