Possible sign from the gods?

I personally volunteered years ago to be sprayed in the face to show the affects of what it can do. It was terrifying and brutal.
This stuff will work on any breed of dog or animal for that matter.
They even have gels and foams now that see pretty user friendly.

I think some of you are focusing on the dog aspect to much. Lol was it out to kill? Probably and thank God not. Would it have attacked aggressively if I showed fear, yes I have do doubts. Maybe a kick or a punch would have been affective, I don't know and glad I didn't have to find out.

My take away here was..

Having a daily knife that would be easy to reach, easy to deploy, and will kill (if necessary) an attacking animal, person, random encounter with the foot clan. While keeping in mind being under duress changes the dynamics of everything. Deployment is slower and clumsy, swinging feels like your in a bowl of jello, and so on.

...Stressed and not fully aware of my body motion, it took all the little training I have from YouTube videos to one, grab my knife, two, deploy my knife and 3, knife fighting stance.. As if someone were telling me to do so and not a natural instinct.

I can't own a gun, when I was 18 I got in to some legal trouble.

Really, I do think Prac Tac might be a better place for this.

That's why carrying knives for self defense is a terrible idea if you don't know what you're doing.

I'm no Indian knife warrior, but I think I did well today for never being in this situation.. :)

I swear, a few more posts and it'll be me who made the attack on a poor unsuspecting animal! Lol Im in good company though as I hate people that hurt animals of any kind. Some people don't get that the animal is just following its instinct and take personally. You guys are alright in my book.

So your YouTube videos training, rapid deploy knife deployment, and knife fighting stance stopped an aggressive pit bull in its tracks.

Thank you for sharing, and glad you were uninjured.

It was a gray muscular pit bull looking k9. Maybe it was a poodle by blood.
This is a poodle. You were safe all along, you just forgot your Prozac, that's all.

lol you're taking it in stride. Pits get a bad rap, it's good to see people who know about them take up for them.

I'd recommend a new Winkler sounds like your wanting one anyway, and a can of pepper spray.. If it's nothing more than a small keychain size can..

Could have just been the way I smelled... I didn't have a chance to shower last night... Eeeww

I'm not sure if it was "tracks" the devil was on... Could have been aggressively interested. Possibly had a death wish and changed its mind..

People being attacked by pits have a tendency to do that.

Its a bit difficult to sift through the posts and discern, what really happened.

Nobody got killed - neither dog nor man - at least thats something.

Like others have suggested, get some quality pepper spray. Not the crap you see at the gas station. It works great on dogs. And given their heightened senses, it may be pretty good on werewolves and vampires too.

I am a very big proponent for the 2nd Amendment and people exercising their right to carry ...

but in all honesty a handgun vs a dog attack you first become so focused on the dog that you can overlook whats in the background ... and once the dog has ahold of you shaking you violently it is very dangerous to attempt to shoot the animal ...

some have mentioned pepper spray ... it is a far better option IMHO ... and if you need to use lethal force the pepper spray will give you the extra bit of time to draw your weapon and make sure of your background before firing. My 2nd suggestion would be a walking stick or collapsable baton ...

a knife would be a last resort to defend against an animal attack ... you may win but you are going to get pretty tore up in the process

I used the one and only thing on me I happened to have been carrying, as I never would have guessed I would run in to a killer poodle. Which is my point. We here EDC knifes all the time. My question was if a fixed blade or a OTF blade. I believe if I would have dropped my Pera I would have really been in panic mode as I was already pretty shaky. I never would have thought deployment would be my biggest concern!

The OP might have mistaken a non commital move by the dog as an attack. Where the dog is still seeing how you will react.

Dogs don't understand the concept of a blade.

Poppycock! My dogs will not jump when I playing with any of my knives, and if someone points an unloaded handgun at them they hide underneath a chair. And they’ve never been stabbed or shot!

You quote somebody who doesnt mention firearms (in the quote).

Some dogs will be afraid of firearms. A friends dog will slink away, when the owner handles his hunting rifle and/or open a gun safe.

That kind of dog clearly connect the dots between the metallic noises, the 'stick' and the loud bang, which it doesnt particularly care for.

There is a difference between a small non-hunting dog knowing specific noises, smells, sights and the determined all-out attack by an enraged pit.

The brain of the latter most likely wont even register a gun.
