Premium Price for G-10?

Why do you expect that? What is the basis for expecting these companies to provide these features at a sub-$100 price?

I really don't know to be honest. I guess I was just hoping there would be others in support of a Benchmade or Spyderco with G-10 and decent steel for around $100. I guess it's just too much to ask and I won't be buying a Benchmade or Spyderco.

g10 is just epoxy and fibreglass - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G10_(material)

you can always make your own (seriously) it's not that hard, just make sure to get the epoxy mixed right
but yeah, you're seriously mixing up a lot of things... the g10 has very little to do with the pricing

spydys and benchm are just higher end, higher margin knives... if you like them, keep an eye out on the for-sale forum for a used one, often under $100

Hoping for something to be is a very different thing that expecting it to be.

This seems to actually be a thread about wanting various features at a certain price point rather than companies charging extra for G10.

Manufacturing is a complicated thing and BF and the internet as a whole, is full of discussions and debates on costs and prices.

You should also know that while there surely are reputable Chinese manufacturers, there are also many whose steel is not what they say it is or heat treated to any respectable level. Their construction is also often shoddy to the point of dangerous. So one must be conscious of the sum of the parts.

Sticking Spyderco as that is what I know, don't you think Sal and Eric would love to market a sub-$100 premium knife (to include quality steel that is properly heat treated and all the other stuff)? Of course they would. If they could do that and still have a profit margin they'd be slinging them out as fast as the machines could make them. But they aren't. Why?

There are lots of composite handle materials available these days. Check out Spyderco's catalogue (on-line) for some excellent descriptions. I'm not aware of any "plastic" grips by any reputable maker.

And compare them to the Tenacious line. Or the G-10 Birds.

My point being, the G-10 is not the price multiplier you think it is.
Exactly. I think country of manufacture is a bigger factor than raw materials.

Unless you are dead set on all USA made, there are lots of options.
Spyderco Byrds, Kershaws, even some Boker Plus knives are made overseas for reputable companies.

G-10 should have little to do with pricing but both Benchmade and Spyderco clearly want a premium price for it. That was my initial point and I just think it's ridiculous. They will never have any motivation to change with so many of you fanboys flaming anybody who speaks out against them and that's the most frustrating thing about issues like this to me.

I think everybody should at least be able to admit that they could offer more G-10 handles at a more reasonable price and still be plenty profitable.

I'll admit that I would like more sub $100 Spyderco products with nicer handles, but I'm not going to say that they should or could offer them at that price.
I don't know what their operating costs are, so I can't say just what price range would allow them to "still be pretty profitable".

Seems most people think that G-10 has little to do with pricing though.

It's been mentioned already, but the Tenacious is basically what you are asking for. It doesn't make sense for Spyderco to make budget knives (regardless of material) in the USA. They might be able to make the Tenacious in Golden CO with upgraded steel, but why make a $100 S30V Tenacious when they already make a $150 PM2?

It does feel like Benchmade reserves their g10 for the more premium knives, but then you are usually looking at better steel to go along with it. I would have to assume that the nylon Griptilian handles are dirt cheap in comparison to the G10 handles.

You can get a buck 110 with G10 and S30V for around $75.

The tenacious is absolutely not what I'm asking for. I prefer 3" blades or just under and 8cr steel is pretty bad for a $50 price range. Good try though and that is only 1 single knife out of their many models they have to offer. It's really no big deal. I just won't buy a Benchmade or Spyderco. Simple as that and I don't know why I'm even still going on lol. I'd still way rather buy a Ganzo Firebird despite the "valuable lessons I've learned."

Who is flaming and what fan boys?

I offered clear examples of your assertion not being correct. It's an another $21 to get liners, G10, and S30V. How is that charging so much extra for G10?

Again, there's nothing wrong with wishing for premium knives at lower prices but that is not the same as expecting it or it being realistic.

Your assertion is, they are just being greedy. I don't agree but it's cool if you do. Just don't buy their knives. There are a lot of Spydercos I don't buy due to price. It's just life.

Then buy your Ganzo and go talk about it somewhere else.

What is another $21? Probably 1 single knife I have no interest in.

And somehow now I'm greedy but Benchmade or Spyderco couldn't be. Wow.

The two Manix examples I gave you.

I have absolutely no interest in that knife. It's funny that people talk about knockoffs and copying when that had clearly been a copy off the Benchmade axis lock but that's OK? You people really make no sense.
