Preparing for Ike...

Be safe. Sounds like your pretty well prepared:thumbup:

Hope all stays well for ya bro........

Obviously ... being a bladeforums member you understand the IMPORTANCE of being prepared. It seems most people these days are more reactive as opposed to being proactive. It's the unenlightened that I wish LUCK to.

Take care.

It's probably 3 hours North of us, but they'll still get plenty wet.

I'm up in Killeen.

Yeah, you know the deal...the biggest threat is high winds and flooding and the possible tornado that may churn up. The Army likes to over-prepare and be cautious which is a good thing, but we have a about 100 families in the Battalion that live off of Fort Hood and we'll have to try and get accountability after the worst of it departs. That's always a challenge!

Again, it's much better to prepare for the worst and hope for the best:thumbup:

Thanks guys and for my fellow Texans (well, I'm actually a Washingtonian [state not DC:barf:]); stay safe!

The rain from this should be nothing like the rain Killeen got last April/May. I was working at Channel 10 in Waco at the time, and I remember that Killeen got something like 24 inches of rain in a little over a day. Lotta rain last year.

I'm pooping myself. This will be my first big storm in Texas. I'm about a half an hour north of Houston and I'm praying it falls apart quite a bit by the time it gets here.

Went to Home Depot today, out of propane, out of plywood, gas cans, batteries, tarps.
I just wanted another propane tank and a few tarps. I ended up finding them at Sears hardware.

I taped all my bigger windows, put everything outside into the garage, filled the gas tanks (nightmare) and packed a go bag for everyone. Were going to sleep in the hallway.

Wish me luck.

Dude...I really doubt it will be too bad shotgunner...there is alot of land between y'all and the storm. Hell, I doubt my folks are doing anything different than any other day. Regardless, stay safe bro.

I wouldn't be to worried. I think the worst we can expect is a bunch of rain, some wind and broken branches. Oh and expect to lose power for a bit.

I'm about to leave work and get everything taken care of. I thought this would be easy but on the way to work my fuel light beeped cuz I about out of gas. Dummy that I am I'll have to wait in long lines for gas.

yeah ,I 'd say dont worry to much bro & be safe..but lesson learned real quick,if you hear mention of a 'cane your area do not wait until the last minute to buy basic 'cane stuff at home depot.. or gas'n up the cars...;) grocery stores will be crowded as well....you'll probably get alot of rain & wind and alittle power outtage...take care...

dougo83, what hippie town you talking about?

My daughter who is expecting and son-in-law live in Austin on the west side. Thank God they left for a weekend get away on the east coast this morning.

Hope to move there in a year or so, to get away from south east Louisiana. I wished I was 150 odd miles from the Gulf like Austin is, I would feel much safer than here in Slidell.

We did okay for Gustav, just lost power for a week which means everything in the fridge/freezer was lost but no damage. Can't say I liked evacuating to Memphis though. Long ride, plenty traffic, lots of criminal activity on evacuees as reported by news media. We were well prepared and armed.

That's the good news, the only problem is the high winds and if on the edges, the spin-off tornados (been through one here back in 2000); of course the rain and flooding are always a concern. I was in Iraq last year, but my wife said it was quite a bit of flooding around here.

Yup...well...I dunno for sure. All I have is access to what the weather 'tards say and they are saying that the storm is hitting way east now, think b-mont, etc, and central TX will be fine. Since most of the damage caused by a 'cane is off of that eastern-most edge, areas like shotgunner's will get wet and all, but it will not be terribly severe as they will be actually "behind" the storm.

I think you may be right with that upper pressure system pushing in more east as it hits. I still need the rain for my grass, but could do without the high winds:D Still, it's a good opportunity to prepare and check everything.

I agree. My fishing would be greatly enhanced by some more rain here. I think I am mostly correct about the storm front thing. However, I never really cared to learn in school as long as there were females present so I may have been distracted if this was covered in class...

I didn't think it was going to be quite this serious... This is the warning for coastal towns. I don't think I have ever heard a warning quite like this.

Edited to say: Shotgunner, I imagine that 30 min North of Houston will be well out of storm surge range. I would prepare more for a power outage/infrastructure collapse.

This is from the NOAA National Weather Service. (emphasis mine)
http://www.weather.gov/view/national.php?prod=HUR
All neighborhoods... and possibly entire coastal communities... will be inundated during high tide. Persons not heeding evacuation orders in single family one or two story homes will face certain death. Many residences of average construction directly on the coast will be destroyed. Widespread and devastating personal property damage is likely elsewhere. Vehicles left behind will likely be swept away. Numerous roads will be swamped... some may be washed away by the water. Entire flood prone coastal communities will be cutoff. Water levels may exceed 9 feet for more than a mile inland. Coastal residents in multi-story facilities risk being cutoff. Conditions will be worsened by battering waves. Such waves will exacerbate property damage... with massive destruction of homes... including those of block construction. Damage from beach erosion could take years to repair.

Where I stay when in Spring is right down the street from the Home Depot. When Gustav couldn't make his mind up to hit New Orleans or Galveston I started asking around about the area. Everyone said you are high enough there to not flood too badly and inland enough to ride it out without major problems.
I'm in L.A. now but I'll be praying for all of you in the path. Shotgunner, you've had enough problems this year. Special prayers going out to your family.
Take care.

Thanks for the good thoughts and advice guys.

Last storm, all the locals on my street said that this area has nothing to worry about, no big deal. "We've been here 22 years and rode out every storm with no problems."

Today, two of those same guys were boarding up and leaving. When I talked to them, they were like "Your staying!?, well, good luck."

OH CRAP.

John...I am referring, of course, to that hippie haven known as Austin.

There is a fun car game I like to play in Austin, its reeeeaaaal easy. I call it:

Spot the Film Student/Indie Filmmaker

We are just expecting some heavy rain and possible tornadoes in my neck of Tejas.
