Prune Big, or Go Home!

As someone who works in manufacturing, yes to all of the above, or someone made a goof up on a run & they decided to let it go. (Personally seen it happen)
Although the company I work for is a massive stickler for every tiny detail in everything we do, we do try our best to keep the scrap costs down & try not to slow down the production due to the demand. But we always make sure everything leaving our plant is up to par in quality although it may look slightly different. Hey that's how the 2nd's happen right?... 😉🤣

or lunch room specials!

"Will the Circle Be Unbroken" ;) 🤓
I've often wondered if old tire material would make good knife handles.

You know I've wondered the same, just from a different perspective. Most don't realize there is a lot of different rubbers & components to a tire. It wildly varies on the type & purpose of the tire. Btw here's a basic diagram of tire layers I pulled from online. I'm not going to share any company secrets 😉

Some tires do have a Kevlar layer, I wonder how that would be as a Micarta 🤔

Cool diagram, Zach! :cool::cool::thumbsup:
I was just imagining a couple of thin slabs of tread or sidewall rubber as knife handles, but I'm obviously not dreaming big enough.
Steel/Titanium/Kevlar-belted rubber knife handles on one of the massive pruners in this thread would be practically indestructible (unless you picked up a stray nail)! 🤓

This 4" closed Marble's pruner is the biggest pruner I have:

Especially if someone could pull off a "tread" jigging! 😂👍🏻

P.S. Random fun fact. Those little hairs on the sides of the tire that we all have picked at one time or another are the air vents on the tire mold. They let air escape during the manufacturing process so there are no deformations or bubble pockets when the tire is being made.

Anyways, back to your normal scheduled Pruning Program! 📺 😉

Speaking of manufacturing errors. Here's a good example. It looks like this part of the scale got stuck in some kind of press for the pin but had to be wiggled out.
It doesn't matter to me, it doesn't affect the function of the knife at all. It's just cosmetic, which makes for a perfect user, only adding to the character 😉

Some wonderful pruners posted in the past few pages, but I'm always drawn to the old ones.
Certainly enjoyed seeing the vintage examples from galvanic1882, waynorth, danno50, and Rufus1949.
Here is the brother to danno50's beautiful etched Keen Kutter model.

Nice "capped" Keen, Neal!!

Beautiful pruner, Neal! Great double rat tail bolster and interesting font on the blade etch. First time I have seen that etch. Sellens says that model was in the catalogs from 1912 thru to 1920. Definitely Walden made.

That Keen Kutter is phenomenal Herder, absolutely gorgeous, of course the etch on that full blade, the Bolster treatment is not so overdone and is just perfect!
Love everything about that.
That Russell is great as well, funny- I had one land the other day just like that- has a small corner of Wood gone just by the rear pin, has the remnants of a deep etch on the Blade boldly stating Russell.
I really like the iron Bolsters on these older knives- it blends in perfectly and Patina's fantastically.

I also got an older Ulster, what attracted me to the worn-but-beautiful knife was the nice thin neck of the Handle that meets nicely with the Bolsters that have the same larger and smaller Rats Tailed Bolster details.

Here's a pruner from Japan I inherited from my grandfather a few years back. He was an electrician so it got rode hard through its life. I don't know anything about the brand though. It's about 4 ¼ inches closed with the markings O.M.O.R. J-239 Japan on the blade. The wood handles are still in great shape, I don't know what kind of wood it is. It's hard to tell, they have decades of oil & sweat from putting in so much work over the years with him. It also has steel liners & the blade is pretty well centered.
Here it is with another piece of wood & steel of Japanese origin from an old neighbor that brought it back from his time in the Pacific over 80 years ago.

Is that Arisaka 6.5 or 7.7? I'd love to get one with an intact chrysanthemum.

It's a 7.7 (specifically the model 99 in 7.7x58mm)
I would like to have one as well, sadly this one was ground off when the war ended as you can see in the first pic ☹️
My old neighbor said he wanted to get the bayonet that went with it to bring back with him. I'd like to find one for his son, the rifle is his now. I'm just cleaning it up for him.

An older Ulster, Blade worn, but I just felt something for this smaller, more finer built Pruner, the Bolsters are very attractive- as Herders beautiful examples above, the thinner neck coming into the Bolsters, typical Ulster- just fine knives.
The Swage is gorgeous and this worn older Pruner still looks so nice imo, there's a whisper i am hearing, telling me " wouldn't it be nice to have a Mint example of this Knife"

Herders Russell is a beauty example, I'm afraid this one doesn't quite match the condition, I have just wiped this down with a Mineral Rag, Iron Liners and Bolsters, a heavily patina'd Blade with the remnants of a deep etch reading RUSSELL. I am sure if I spent some time on this Knife I could bring it up a little - but I am liking the way it is now.
Gorgeous Old Wood, and a Blade packing lots of life in it yet.
