Public perception of people carrying knives

Well yes...the classic example is a dagger.
I have never carried an EDC dagger for general utility. In fact, the only knives my grandfather ever thought of as weapons were in fact daggers.

I would have to concede that knives with brass knuckle type handles are probably not really intended for opening bags of potato chips either; I think my grandfather would have agreed (especially since most of those style had dagger blades ;)).

Ever since I saw a "sticking knife" from Baryonyx, I have totally wanted to EDC it. It's for killing hogs, etc, as efficiently and painlessly as possible but for some reason I wish I had one to EDC. I don't know why. Sometimes I love the look of knives I don't have a specific use for... I try not to buy them. But I fail sometimes. I'm only human.

Those and the various Karambits come to mind right off the bat. :)

Except for the fact that my Emerson Karambit gets used as a utility knife...

I know that Emerson extolls it's "combat" abilities, but it shares the same basic blade shape as a carpet knife.

I don't have to combat anyone...my life isn't full of "high speed-low drag" operator danger and excitement.
I do, however, end up opening packages, cutting tape, and whatever other utility needs there may be (which some days are none at all).

Sometimes, a curved blade is the best choice for the job. :)

The double edged karambits aren't as great for utility use though...they end up in the "dagger" category. :D

I have a few carpet knives around so I know what you mean, but I won't EDC one or a Karambit, but that's me.

I did carry a Fairbairn Sykes back when I was in the USMC when on deployment, but that was a purpose knife and I was in the Military on deployment, back in the states it stayed in the locker.

EDC it in the woods...you can carry whatever you want in the woods. :)

There's a time and place for everything...and it's called the woods. :D

Nice Tuff Lite (yeah I know, one of the least awesome knives in those pics but it's the only one I also have so..)

There's great woods near my parents' place, I don't get out there as often as I would like. However it's also a State Park so some restrictions apply, etc.

Of course, this is all distracting us form the real question...what's the public's perception of hamsters with swords?

Obviously, the answer is adorable. ;)

The Mini Tuff Lite is actually a great little knife, and won't bug anyone for EDC use. :)
I don't know what the restrictions in State Parks are, but it probably involves similar things as our Provincial Parks. I try to go elsewhere, if at all possible.

Daggers are just double edged knives. You cut with one side and flip it over to work with a fresh edge. In another context, they are just common letter openers, and even in the special forces very few would have been used to attack people; for the most part they would have been designed and issued by the services primarily to promote esprit de corps .

Hamsters with swords is horrifying..

Using a knife for it intended purpose, not so much!

Damn, now you reminded me I still need to pick up one of those ruckis. Thanks a lot:grumpy:

I use my knives to cut things. I keep an ax handle in my truck for self defense. I carry a small fixed blade that I made on a daily basis for work and never get a second glance other than" wow you made that?" Granted, in SC it isn't a big deal to see a knife in someone's pocket

O

I just ordered a old hickory sticking knife based on his post- hated the blue handle then found the hick with the wooden one. Funny.
I live in CO too, and despite the other two posters Ive never gotten a funny look pulling ANY of my knives, bk14 included. Hell, bk15, ontario marine raider bowie out in the foreat, kershaw speedbump in the grocery store. Do you guys live in Boulder or something?

Awesome job man! That thing is bad ass.

Thanks. :)

And on topic for the thread, the public perception of it has been positive, especially once people find out I made it.
The conversation ends up being about hand-crafting things, and all sorts of positive stuff.

I recently started getting back into knives(pocket) again after years of not carrying and I don't know why I stopped. I used to carry an old knife that was given to me by my grandfather everywhere and used it almost daily and not once did I ever get a strange look( that I recall) for using it in a public place. It seems now if you even carry a pocket knife, much less use it in public, I get some looks like I have an arm growing from my forehead. Is this a common occurrence from other users here, or am I just getting older and paranoid? What say you?

I live in one of the most liberal places in California and have never had an issues or noticed people noticing my knife.

I used it the other day in Petco to help the sales guy cut my aquarium background when his scissors kept failing. He said "Damn, sharp knife."

I was at a night club once and someone asked the bartender for a knife (so he cold cut his lime smaller for his corona [gross]) and she said to give her a min, so I let him use mine. The bartender said "nice!".

Actually now that I'm writing this I remember 2 examples of people not liking my knife:

One time when I was 18, the cops came to my birthday party (uninvited) and cited me for carrying a switch blade (SOG Flash 2), amongst other things. I enjoyed seeing the cop a few months later and letting them know that I was carrying the knife again, and that I had go it out of evidence after the judge determined it wasn't a switch blade like I had told them.

Another time I was rear ended and part of my bumper was hanging off. I asked the cop if he had any tools I could unbolt the bumper with and he said "I have a knife" and I said "good call" and pulled my Griptilian out to cut my bumper off. I didn't see the cop, but my friend said he looked PO'd when I pulled it out.

ETA:

I've also carried my Scrapyard S6 and OKC RD4 without issues on several occasions, but I'm usually wearing hiking type clothes because I'm going to or coming from hiking so I probably look normal.

One time after a hike I found a severely injured dog on the side of the freeway and had to call CHP to dispatch it. I hung out with the dog for a while until CHP got there, and remembered to put my RD4 away before the cops got there.
