Puukkos

If you like looking at puukko, take a look at my website. The pics are about 4 years old, so I've added a lot since then.
BTW, I don't like the Syderco puukko - why pay over $200 for a Japanese made (?) knife when you can get a Finnish
Tommi for about the same price??

Rich,

I share your feelings, but there are good reasons for a person to get the Spyderco puukko.

1) Spyderco is a top notch company with an excellent reputation for making quality knives. It may not appeal to purists, but if all a man wants is a good puukko this knife fits the bill.
2) The Spyderco puukko is readily available and if you order one today you can have it in hand by the end of the week. The wait for a custom puukko ranges from a couple of months to more than a year.
3) Some people may not want to deal with the issues inherent in international commerce. Maybe they don't want to bother with customs or perhaps they are not savvy consumers. I had to educate myself quite a bit before I felt comfortable enough to place an order for a custom puukko.

If you know what you want then by all means get a handmade puukko. They're really nice, I own a few myself. But the Spyderco is a good alternative.

My friend has these two on the way to him.

A simple design, but the execution is off the charts!

I'm reminded of a thread in the Spyderco subforum where others were expressing the same sentiments about the BushcraftUK. A couple of people stated that the Spyderco from Taichung, Taiwan was superior in materials, fit and finish to their customs from top makers. The guy who designed and approved this production model seems to be pretty well thought of, too. But then, I'm not much of a purist, either. I just like a good knife.

I would esp recommend Taisto's site (he's THE man on puukko) the article on knives 3rd link on his page is great:

Now I haven't shared this one, even I have had this one for 11 tears now: My one true safe queen. Its no custom, its almost regular Marttiini Ilves (i.e. Lynx / Bobcat) with their softer-side stainless steel blade, cast bronze bolster and curly birch handle. But this is my army branch special course (Field Medicine) gradutation puukko with my name and unit engraved on blade and my branch symbol pressed into sheath:

Maybe a stupid question but I have to ask. I have seen puukko sheaths like the sheath on the top in this picture. So you just thread your belt through the loop?
I like this thread and am getting puukko fever :D

Pasi Hurttila Puukko and Leuku.

Yes, or a clip like shown. Lots of folks use carabiners on their belts or belt loops.

beautiful looking knives guys.. i never get tired of these kind of threads.. i'll try and get some of mine up later..

Just got an email from Pasi that my puukko will ship on Monday -- the knife is done, he just has to do the sheath. Hopefully by the end of next week I'll have it in my grubby paws and can contribute some some pics to this thread. In the meantime, everyone else continue posting to keep the cockles of my heart warm until mine arrives! :D

I asked Scott Gossman to make a puukko, this is it. Modern yet traditional, with a good grip. I really like this one.

Who is the maker of the bottom two puukkos?
A swedish brukskniv from Karl-Erik Lindblad with blade made by the Nylund brothers

and my two favourites puukkos

Speaking of the Spyderco the steel choice was made after Tuominen tests on his own EDC, with S30V steel. Anyway you can actually get a custom paying way less than 200 $.
