Case quality has been debated many times. I would ask if it was case or nothing for next year would you buy one? I would.
I would buy it, but I think there's a high likelihood I would return it due to QC issues. If many others felt the same way it would create a headache for the dealer selling them.

That is true. I’ve bought case knives and all have issues. I also bought them knowing they would have some so there was never a thought of returning. My point is it would be sad if the tradition didn’t continue.

For the heavy lifting that would fall on a dealer for sure. However there can be responsibility divided up for some of the smaller and maybe time consuming tasks that could make the process smoother or less stressful. I’ve been a committee member on initiation processes that encompass several months and a large (to me) scale event. I, like many others, have opinions and those can be leveraged. I guess I’m trying to offer up possible solutions so that the “forum” knife doesn’t stop at 2021. I don’t think it is too much to ask for people who want them to put in some of the work too.

I suppose a committee could be formed. It would take someone taking the initiative and willing volunteers to fill in the ranks. I do agree that it doesn't have to be the burden of only one or two members but it's something to keep in mind for future endeavors - should there be any.

I was thinking about this some as well. How did the knife clubs who have done GEC SFOs manage to get theirs SFOs ordered, paid for, and distributed?

I thought Mike gave us some pretty good insights in 2019. I don't think he conducted the process like those who came before him though so the mileage could vary, so to speak.

Dylan, Buck has said they are not doing any SFO...don't know if this is forever...they are still doing their Buck Of The Month knife.

I did hear that about SFOs. I was mostly curious because of Barry's wording - it almost sounded like we may have created enough headaches that they wanted to wash their hands of us.

It's always kinda come down to money. Plenty of people offer to help, when tens of thousands of dollars are involved, taxes, liability, individual forum members are not really much help. For example, 500 knives at say a cost of $85.00 is $42,500

We need to not rock the boat and stick with what we got, we have the best knife forum team standing up for all of us, with an A list manufacture. Why would we want anything else.... other than next year we need a 1000 knife run - but that puts us in the 100k territory for liability etc.

Thanks for the insight. I don’t have retail experience. This exemplifies the benefits to a team. The many coming together with experience, specialty knowledge and unified goal.

Does Opinel do custom handle engraving? That might keep the budget reasonable for next year, and give us a good knife that no one would fight over...
Opinel-USA does custom handle and blade engraving. All you need to do is send them an image file, I forget which format. You could vote on a design (I nominate you to do the artwork…). If you made the image file available for download somewhere, folks could order whatever knife they liked on their own and get it engraved with that image.

Prepay and a strict no returns. As well as (if its a low quality thing) all must buy two. That way at least one of them will be up to snuff hopefully. Otherwise a little trading might need to happen.

In the future, id be willing to help somewhere. Life should settle down in a couple months from now. Second baby was born 3-4 weeks ago as we have also been in process of moving, driving loads down from washington to arizona. So ive barely even been on here only to check the “did i miss the bf knife” posts.

“Wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants.”

― Epictetus

There will be time to reflect on the process this year and what could have been done or not done to improve it--that's part of the process every year. There's certainly disappointment every year, as well as a lot of thankfulness and generosity. I'm going to add my name to the list of other forum members who are willing to contribute their to another who was qualified to make the purchase but found himself or herself unable to make the purchase when the "drop" happened. If you were on the initial ordering list thread and find yourself without a knife when everything has settled, just let me know (this is assuming my order goes through, of course!).

There are more joys to be had in investing in people than in possessions, and that's what a forum knife is at the end of the day, just a possession (however special). But getting to enjoy people who share common interests is far more rewarding, and it usually isn't something you know you "want" until it is gone.

Porch regulars--however disheartening it is to watch folks who aren't here for the Porch jump in and buy up knives long-time Porch members have poured a lot of time and effort into making happen, remember that this is part of the cost, just as is the time, labor, and arguments that many don't enjoy, but which also become something to laugh about or tell a good story about later. Remember that every time a flipper gets a knife and sells it for 3 or 4 times it's cost (or more) that he isn't really gaining much, after all, and he's forfeiting the really rewarding wealth that you get to experience because you care more about enjoying people than accumulating possessions.

New guys--however exciting it is to participate (whether throughout the process, or at the last minute) in acquiring this well-made and desirable possession, don't forget that it isn't as important as the people who also helped to make it happen, and have been (many of them) for the past decade (and more). Remember that good things like a forum knife don't happen just because people want it and ask for it, but because people who enjoy one another are willing to put forth the extra effort to do something good for one another. You don't cultivate that sort of yield by only coming to the field at harvest time. If you make an effort to be a part of the community, you'll find yourself welcomed and wanted. If not, you can still get a cool knife, but at least recognize and show respect for regulars, since what you are getting wouldn't be here if it weren't for folks here who aren't around just to get a cool knife once a year.
Great post, thanks for sharing your thoughts and sentiments. It certainly puts things in perspective.

Congrats on the new baby and good luck on your move.

I'm not anything other than a Buck sub forum participant, so for what it's worth. I think the pandemic and a change in management/admin personnel has had it's effect on the way Buck Knives, Inc. conducts it's business going forward.

Never mind, it looks like they maybe stopped doing custom designs and now do text only:
”we do not offer logo/artwork engraving at this time.”
Maybe they only do the custom logos for the corporate orders now, and I think they prohibit reselling them.
I had this done a few years ago (bad wood-burning was my own addition):

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE U.S. MEMBERS IN GOOD STANDING AND ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE FORUM KNIFE BUT DIDN'T GET ONE - READ ON!

I have held back a few knives until the exact number available is known. I won't know how many until GEC actually ships. If you claimed one in the original purchase thread but didn't get your forum knife email me at gunstockjack@embarqmail.com and I will put you on the waiting list for the few remaining.

I WILL BE CHECKING YOUR STATUS SO NO NEWBS PLEASE. Numbers are limited so keep it real folks. Thank you.
T. Erdelyi T. Erdelyi just confirmed with me that he wasn't able to order one (he's on vacation without his computer). PLEASE set one aside for him. I'm messaging him to tell him to email you as well. Thanks.

LOL!! Great job.

Who's the dude in the Facebook Jacuzzi?

It’s supposed to be a fence 😁, but I can see how it looked like a hot tub now that you say it. I went back and edited my post with an updated version:

If there's one thing the whole forum knife process is known for, year after year, it's no funny business allowed.

If we are lucky enough to get a forum knife in future years, I think this needs to be on the box/tube label. Would go hand in hand with a meako rambling.

Yep, and lets have that Latin mottto etched on the blades! :D ;)

😁

Wow...I was travelling for work and now the orders are sold out. All this waiting and no knife.

I emailed gunstockjack...sure hope I get one!
